Happy Birthday: you've got borderline personality disorder.

Yesterday I turned 25, I had a psych appt. at which it was confirmed I have borderline personality disorder. Needless to say, it's not been the best birthday I've ever had.
The psych I spoke to wasn't the most helpful. He was very matter of fact, didn't offer much advice on what I was feeling. He increased my venlafaxine to 150mg for 4 weeks then it's to increase again. I asked if there was something I could have to regulate my mood, make it more stable but he said no. There must be something, I'm in hell. I can't go from feeling depressed to completely distressed and suicidal in 5 mins.
How am I supposed to cope at work with my mood changing like this all the time. I'm 25 now and on my own. I'm going to be stuck on my own, my most recent ex who was always there will no longer speak to me. I'm now avoiding everyone so I can avoid causing problems. I can't maintain a healthy relationship with anyone so what's the point?

Thank you, I appreciate that. I'm working all weekend unfortunately, although some point during the week would certainly be great.

BPD isn't really treated with medication so next time you see him ask about a referral to do a type of therapy called DBT or something similar. This will teach you to help regulate your mood which is much better than a medication.

Good luck and happy birthday.

Please remember BPD isn't a life sentence - recovery is definitely possible. There are a few good books on it which will give you a bit more insight and ways of coping with the condition, maybe looking at that would help a little.
