Black Stools

This is a bit yucky but does anyone know if drinking too much red wine can make your stools really black. I had just over a bottle and a half of red wine last night and it has been getting worse all day. last time was blacker than black!!:-(

I don't know for sure but I would imagine so! Hopefully it'll be better tomorrow if you don't have any other symptoms.

Gofeen 02-01-2016 12:28 AM

Thanks. I've read conflicting things about it on line.

Are you taking iron tablets at all? That makes stools black.

Gofeen 02-01-2016 07:54 PM

No, not taking iron tablets and that amount of alchohol only happens very ocassionally. I'll give it a day or two and if it hasn't improved I'll see the doctor when they open on Tuesday. I had an episode with mucous rather than bleeding about a month ago with no alcohol involved. I haven't had a movement today so I'll wait and see. My mum had bowel cancer so it scares me a bit.

I would say to pop in to your doctor anyway. If you can, get a sample bottle and get a bit of it in that to show the doctor.
Chances are that it's nothing but it's worth going and having them put your mind at rest anyway.
Good luck with it all!

I also wonder if you took any Pepto Bismol or something similar to deal with any potential stomach problems following the wine? That can cause changes to the colour.

Gofeen 03-01-2016 10:51 PM

Nope, didn't take anything at all. Just my usual meds.

Gofeen 04-01-2016 09:02 PM

Argh! Still black as coal and no more red wine so definitely going to the doctor tomorrow!

Gofeen 05-01-2016 04:24 PM

Went to the doctor with sample and he sent me to hospital. I was admitted overnight - just home. Seems I have had an internal bleed, probably a few days ago so got to go back for an endoscopy. It might be an ulcer but don't think it is anything really serious.
