Statutory Sick Pay

Has anyone got any experiences of statutory sick pay? I'm in the UK.

I get four weeks company sick pay, but I used that up when I was in hospital last year. I'm off work at the moment and have been for three weeks. I work two days a week, but earn more than the £112 pound a week necessary to be eligible.

I'm a bit confused about the needing to be unwell for 4 days before they'll pay. I'm not sure what it means when it says that the four days don't have to be working days. Does that mean that after the first two days off, because there are a few working days between those days and the date I was due in work, I will get paid the full amount for the further two weeks I have been off?

I will really struggle financially if I don't get anything at all, especially because if I need surgery I'll be off for a couple more weeks, I would have thought. I can't claim ESA because I get working tax credits (they still pay these for a certain duration even if I'm off work.) I have savings, but I'd rather not go into them. I have rent, bills and food to pay for.

It's not a disaster, as like I said, I have savings. I would like to know exactly where I stand though, so I can budget until I get my next payslip.
