How was the site created?
 

I am interested in programming and I was wondering what language the site was written in. I get all the elements were written in HTML and CSS, but what was the forums and chat written in? I'd assume javascript but it could be PHP also.

And last thing: does the site use any API's or plugins, and could I see the unobfuscated source code of the site? (I promise not to copy the code or send it to anyone else, I am simply a young boy interested in web development :tongue2: )

Yes it does, but that only shows a bit of code. It doesn't show all the Javascript and a lot of the post managment operations would be server-side so I'd need to see the server code.

I'm using Chrome so really it only shows me the HTML file with all the elements, if there are any other external plugins or Jscript files I can't see them.

Oh also another thing I though of is how are the passwords stored? Do they use a hashing and salting algorithm and if so which one?

The forum is made using vBulletin 3.6.4.

The chat was made by a company called Realchat which no longer exists.

These do most of the heavy lifting.

I tried to find Realchat the other day and it's definitely not the same company. :p

Agree with Andy; much of the site code was not written by RYL (LiveHelp, vBulletin, RealChat were all bought parts of the site).

Yeeeaaah please let's not answer that.

It's simple, they're stored in a jar on Harleys desk. Everytime someone logs in, it sends him a text message with what they tried. He digs through the jar of pieces of paper and once he finds your username, if its correct he lets you back into your account.

I would love if that was how it happened. :p

On a serious note, the forum uses the same software as a lot of the big forums - like TSR for example - and therefore is pretty secure.

Yeah... this post for the win. Most of the forums today are run by vBulletin or Invision power board. BTW I'm quoting you but but the post is really geared towards the OP. I'm only going on since it's relevant information

If you really want to play around with forum code, there's open source software that you can use to "make" your own forum and there's even free server space if you look for it correctly. Only thing would be that you wouldn't have a unique webpage address. You would be stuck with something like 'mypersonalforum.serverowner.org or something to that extent.

If you're interested in forum building, MyBB is the closest thing to vbulletin.
