People might think they're insignificant when they're not

Sorry for the long title - wasn't sure how to explain what I meant.

I just want to share two little stories: A few months ago I was having trouble getting to work - or even getting out of bed due to my depression. Someone suggested I set myself 3 little goals: 1. Get out of bed and have a shower. 2. Get to work. 3. Enjoy one student in my class (I'm a teacher). It was the third one that I want to share with you. In my class there is a little boy who is not that different to any other kid. He has a bit of a speech impediment, he isn't the brightest or the most talented, nor the best behaved but he has lovely big brown eyes that look up at me with such innocence and trust. So for the next two weeks I went to school for "Boy's name". Every day when I thought I couldn't do it, I couldn't face another day, I did it for him. He will never know that him simply being in my class, my simply seeing him each day made such a difference to me and my life. He didn't do anything special but I am grateful that he was there.

2nd story: About once an month I go the library, return some books and borrow new ones. About a year ago they installed self-service scanners so you don't have to line up to get a librarian to scan your books out for you. Despite this I always line up. The librarians are always polite and have a little chat about what I am borrowing or how busy the library is - nothing important or lengthy. They never criticize me for not using the self-service scanners or if I have a fine for being a few days late. What they don't know is that often the librarian is the first person I have spoken to all day - in fact frequently they are the only person I will talk to face to face all weekend. They remind me that I do exist, that I am connected to other people, that I don't live in an empty vacuum.

What I am rather awkwardly trying to say is that just by being alive sometimes we can make a huge difference to someone else's life and never realise it.

Those stories are very inspirational! Than you for sharing them (: But I agree with you. Everyone is important in someones life. Even if you don't know it. Just talking to someone can brighten someones day. Everything you do has a purpose.

Both of those stories were very inspirational. I liked how u told the story wothout going off the point to what u were trying to say. It all made sense i think. These stories both have a part to play in life and we all know it.

Im glad to hear that dispite everything what ur going through u out others first before u and not many people think about doing that. They go on about how hard their life is and cant do anything and want some sympthy but u dont come across like that. You made sense to what u were saying.

I think what ur also trying to say is to think about those in ur life what make a difference Some how everyday. You want people to think that again dispite everything going on u in ur life that u try and focus on the people who make a difference to ur life and u making a difference to theres.

When u said about the boy who has a speech impairment made me think about how u told the story by making a difference to someones life and u know that eventhough ur going through stuff they are two but its making a big difference to theres. You have for certain as u are the one what talks to him and not caring about what anyone else thinks.

I have to say i work in a place where there are a mix of people who contribute to society in different ways even having a disabilty of some sort. You cant tell they do but they give back to the community and people respect that. Get on in many different ways . Everyone makes a difference some how to someones life.

I dont look at who they are. I look at the sort of person they are. Its about someone respecting u and u respecting them. You know everyone is different and thats what life is about.

You are changing someones life everyday and keep it up as ur doing well :)

Well Done :)

Those stories are great.

I can remeber reading once about a man and every time he crossed a bridge in his car or waking he would wave at every one. When is wife asked "why do you wave at everyone on bridges" the man replied "because there are many times when people have tried to kill thesself by jumping off bridged and they often say I would have though twice if someone had acknowledged me that day, so I acknowled everyone on a brings just incase they needed it to stope them from attempting to kill themselves"

Not quite the same thing but you just reminded me of that story.x

Hi, I am new to this site. I have no idea what I'm doing so I apoogize if I am interfering or overstepping. The "insignificant" in the title caught my eye. That is pretty much how I feel.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm glad it made sense to people - JusC thank you for saying that I stayed on task sometimes I do seem to ramble. Thank you Ballerina for adding a positive story as well. Maybe other people will be able to acknowledge people who have done little things that make a bit difference. When I wrote this I had been reading lots of posts about how some people were feeling unnoticed and unimportant and I really wanted them to see that even if they feel insignificant they aren't, they just might not know how much their actions are effecting someone else.
Jasigirl I am so sorry that you feel insignificant but you aren't. Even just the fact that you read and replied to my post makes me feel worthwhile and valid. You are important and you being here makes a difference to lots of people everyday. I hope you can see this one day soon.
