I'm not sure I would call myself a furry technically . . . but I've been trying out furry art and literature for a while now. Plus, I lurk on FurAffinity all the time. Oh, and one of my friends is having a fursuit made right now and we're going to a fur con together.

And I think furries are probably the coolest people ever. Yeah.

I did a search here for the word "furry" a few months ago and the results were not so great.

Furry is a term that can mean a million different "levels" of a similar thing, so if you just googled "furry" you might get some scary results. Fair warning.

Mainly the word "furry" refers to a specific element that can be of a lifestyle, an element of art, an element of writing, etc. Meaning "furry art" will be art of characters who are furries or anthropomorphic. "Furry literature" is writing in which one, some, or all of the characters are anthropomorphic characters or "anthros." People who call themselves furry usually have some sort of "fursona" which is an . . . anthropomorphic or animal version of themselves or an alternate personality of theirs.
(Oh, and in case you didn't know, anthros are just animals that can stand and talk and wear clothes and walk on their hindlegs, like Huntgio said, they're animals with human qualities).

I hope this cleared some of it up instead of complicating it.

Oh wow awesome, thank you for explaining! Yes I was worried what the term 'furry' would actually return on a google search :rofl:
However, I did just google 'anthromorphic' and read about attributing human qualities to animals.... Perfectly described myself really because I definitely treat my three cats like humans and feel that they can understand/feel certain human emotions!

If you're not worried about nsfw and fetish art/lit being thrown in your face, you might want to check out FurAffinity.net to give yourself an idea about what being a furry means. It's been around since the MySpace days.
Actually, google "furaffinity" instead of typing in the web address because if you type it in a certain way it takes you to a scary place with naked ladies in fur coats . . . *cringes*

If you're under 18 or just don't want to have to sift through nude furry art, then I honestly have no idea where to direct you. Sorry. ><

Also, a lot of furry content is triggering and the community doesn't use trigger warnings in most cases because of the demographic. These are usually adults who've made it through their entire lives finding ways to cope with their specific triggers and they just don't think about a younger generation who might be reliant on trigger warnings to save them from experiencing that. Especially if you're trans*, gay/lesbian, a victim of rape/sexual abuse, have body dysmorphic disorder, or gender dysphoria, you should be careful as these subjects are common in furry art and literature. Many furries have had rough lives and grew up in a time where there wasn't much help, so the way they view and speak of their personal struggles is much different than the way kids today do it.

I didn't know there was more to being a fury than it being a sexual fetish. I found out this particular side of it from a CSI episode :-p

Yes I must admit I always thought it was a purely sexual thing, this is from reading things about it on Reddit!

I've honestly never met a furry who . . . well, does that . . stuff. There's always furry nude art, but I've never come into contact with an open furry fetishist.
Although, I'm sure with the nature of the furry fandom much like those who do . . . medieval rpgs for example, the media could have a total field day making them out to be freaks. :( It's sad that that's how it is, but the media pretty much makes a living off of making fun of people.

I think there is a clear difference between a 'furry' and someone who simply thinks as their cat as a human-like creature, or who likes My Little Pony. What that difference is probably isn't very clear cut, but I think it's definitely there. I think it's more people who somehow align themselves to an animal, and see themselves having certain animal-like qualities, and perhaps even features such as adding tails or ears.

But it's difficult to explain, so . . . I'm at a loss as to what to say to distinguish between the two. Plus, I'm notoriously over talkative and I didn't want to post an essay in the thread.
