Difference between Aussie English and British English
I watch Neighbours and sometimes they have the occasional term which we dont use in the UK or differences in term.
Such as 1) Pokeys - I know this is a gambling related term, but what is it exactly? I am guessing that our equivalent would be slot machines (also called fruit machines). 2) AVO - what is it exactly? I guess the UK equivalent would be an restraining order which bans someone from contacting or approaching someone and they would get into trouble if they go near them. 3) Why do Aussies hate Neighbours so much? All Aussies I have spoken to hate Neighbours, which has realistic storylines unlike our soaps which have far fetched storylines. I am struggling to think of what else there is. I know that sanger is what we call a sandwich though. |

Thanks for that Bishop.

Well I am not British but I looked some stuff up. Apparently what Americas call cotton candy and you guys call candy floss, is called fairy floss in aussie (which I am jealous of that is a cool name I am so starting to call it that from now on.)

I have wondered why Australian slang for British is "Poms" what does that mean?

Apparently it means "prisoner of mother England" (or atleast that is the main answer I have found when I searched.) http://www.theguardian.com/notesandq...-59927,00.html |
Pokey = slot machine. Pretty sure its slang for poker machine not sure why. But I guess you also 'poke' money into them.
I think AVO is a restraining order. Not sure aussies have funny terms even if we are really close to them. |
Yes pokies is gambling machines so if you were going to go play them you'd say "I'm going to the pokies".
Yes you're right on the AVO. And I don't think all Aussies hate Neighbours. I think because it's still viewed as a soap people think it is cheesy. Not everyone is info that type of show-I'm not. But it has enough viewers here we still air it. Hope that helps :) Yay for Sangas! |
