Does anybody know anything about.....

Axolotl eggs? I know it's a long shot, but it's worth an ask.

We've just seen loads of eggs in out tank, they weren't there this morning so haven't been there too long. Does anyone know anything about hatching them?

I know we'd be lucky to have any survive on our first attempt, especially since we weren't expecting it, but it can't hurt to try right?

We did initially think we had two boys, Philip and Patrick... Patrick is now
Penelope!

Go on caudata.org it has all the info known to man amd has its own forum dedicated to axolotl keeping. Any eggs you want to keep to try and hatch, remove...parents will eat the rest.

I've just been given a tank off a family friend, so just about to transfer them over.

thanks for the links, will give them a try

The breadth of subjects on RYL never ceases to amaze me!

Good luck - make sure they don't all hatch!

How does the species survive if they just eat all their kids???

Sorry to gatecrash your thread (don't know if you use your names on the boards OP?), the fact above just tickled my curiosity!

I was thinking the same myself, I guess they just lay them then leave?? Maybe that's why there's not many left in the wild...

I'm not bothered :)

Here's a picture of the eggs if anyone is interested (just about half of what she laid)....

Starting to take shape....

Are the eggs the black spots...? Otherwise i just see plant haha

Rodolphus 03-02-2014 05:31 PM

^ Yeah :) In better light they're surrounded by two layers of jelly. They're growing so fast and we (OP & I) think they might hatch this week :) They look like little arrows with eyes but still tiny (maybe about 8-10mm in length?) and still in their 'shell'. It's amazing :)

We've attempted to set up a brine shrimp culture so there's food for them when they hatch. It has to be tiny live moving creatures until they develop legs and stuff.

Indeed! I just went from lego, to threesomes, to organ donation, to axolotl eggs. What a beautiful varied community we have.

How could posting about hatched axolotl eggs on an axolotl egg thread be a hijack?!

Hurrah for baby axolotls! Are they cute?

Rodolphus 06-02-2014 10:12 PM

Because it's not my thread :P And she may want to deliver the news herself >_> Whoops!

They started hatching yesterday, I've only seen a photo but they're still tiny ^_^ But they're being fed live food now, so hopefully they'll grow up to be big and strong. It's all very exciting ^_^

They're your babies too :)

They're so cute ^_^ some hatched in the main tank! I found one alive and think I managed to rescue it. But there must be like 50? Maybe more....

Captainshiny 06-02-2014 11:56 PM

The cutest animal ever! They live in water and are like an undeveloped salamander. Have a look in goggle images :)

Captainshiny 09-02-2014 03:27 AM

I see I'm not much of a person for animals though :c
