Would you eat insects?

Let's face it, it'll be impossible to turn the whole world vegetarian, we like our meat too much.
But you love affair with beef is damaging to the environment, from the acres of Brazilian forest ton down for grazing land, to the tonnes of methane a cow will pump into the atmosphere.

we need an alternative source of protein and seems the nations of the far east have the solution; Insects. They can be tasty, are high in protein; in some cases higher than beef or pork, are much easier to raise and have a much smaller carbon footprint.
according to wikipedia insects are eaten in over 80% of the world's countries.

So, the question is, would you eat insects?

And don't just think of a large bowl of grasshoppers or crawling worms, the world has some interesting recipes when it comes to serving insects, such as:

Cooked Huhu Grubs:

Banana Worm Bread:

Fried Silk Worms:

Insect Sushi (Honey Caterpillar croquettes to give their proper name):

Chocolate Covered Silkworm:

Ant Eggs (taste like nuts apparently):

And a classic, I have tried it myself and it's very tasty-

Scorpion Vodka:

So, in answer to my own question, YES, I would eat insect based meals, because they can be quite tasty.

Not regularly but I've eaten fried scorpion

Sefka 20-06-2013 01:18 AM

Sure, why not.

I've eaten scorpion (are they insects?) willingly, and grubs and cicadas under duress.

Scorpion was in all kinds of spices so no idea what it tastes like, but it made my tongue go numb.

Grubs tasted like salad cream, but I couldn't get over the visual aspect.

Cicadas were the worst. It was in China, in a tiny local restaurant where we had a relationship (guanxi) and we were given them as a gift. No way could we refuse them, but a guy in our group just wouldn't do it so I had to crunch up two of them. It was not pleasant.

I had some in China. They were pretty heavily coated with something that tasted nice though so I was like, eh, whatever. Crunch away!

I'm just not sure I could do it, I would like to be a person who was like f*ck it and try them but I'm just not. Tbf though if it was really, really important (like drastically offending someone of another culture) I would try my hardest to get it down my throat, even if I had to nip casually to the loo after ;-p Weirdly though scorpion in no way freaks me out the way the thought of the smaller things does.

Isoverity 20-06-2013 03:39 AM

Not sure I could eat insects but I voted for a couple

ferretmonster 20-06-2013 11:25 AM

Eww no, but my cousin has travelled with work a lot amd has tried some very odd stuff but personally I'm a big girls blouse

crazykat 20-06-2013 11:28 AM

No, just the thought of it makes me feel sick

Nope sorry just nope couldn't do it, don't care if I consume them unawares, I don't remember so its okay I just wouldn't do it willingly now maybe if my life was at risk I would but not otherwise.

LemonTangWang 26-06-2013 05:13 PM

Nonono I wouldn't even be able to pick them up much less put them in my mouth. I'll stick to my ozone destroying cows for now thank you.

Forest Fire 26-06-2013 08:55 PM

No. they look disgusting, I imagine they'd feel horrible in your mouth and I don't like the thought of eating any whole creatures as you'd be eating all of their little intestines and lungs and stuff.

Aquifolia 26-06-2013 09:09 PM

^Yum intestines! But really that is pretty disgusting to think about.

I think if I ever had the opportunity to do it I think I would just to say that I did. It doesn't sound appetizing to me at all but if other people have eaten insects and survived, don't see why I can't.

Born Survivor 26-06-2013 09:12 PM

Yup why not got to be healthier than most of the "fast food" rubbish on sale today, as long as they were clean and free from disease.. At least you know what you are getting with a grasshopper.. What's in a Mcd's burger? The list is longer than your arm...

I've tried lots of different types of fish and shellfish, where do i get some insects? Do they sell them in the supermarkets?

Not intentionally, maybe if the fruit hasn't been washed very well :tongue2:

there are special shops which sell this kind of odd food, but mostly you have to order it from the internet.

You make a valid point there. There's no denying that a grasshopper is a grasshopper.

Horse meat.

Couldn't resist.
I think that I would probably eat insects. But they would have to look not like insects I think because that would weird me out. But that's just because I wasn't brought up eating them I guess.

Well that's true. So many countries have insects in their diet and eat them without batting an eyelid.
Yet you try to explain to them about, say, Stilton; a potent cheese that has been left until it starts to go mouldy, they will look at you like you're mad and will think that is disgusting.
It really just does depend what you've been raised on.

Leo Pard 02-07-2013 03:31 AM

Yeah, definitely. Same with things like olives but to a lesser extent.

Field Of Paper Flowers 02-07-2013 08:59 PM

Hell no.

I won't even eat healthy food, so I'm not eating a creepy crawly.
