Anyone read the book BPD for Dummies?

Anyone read this book, I'm thinking about getting it and having a read then maybe giving it to my mum and sister to read as I think they need to understand my EUPD/BPD better. But I wanted to know if it is worth getting or if there is another better book that explains what it is and how it effects people, not a self help type book, but more an info book.

I have never read the book, but I have seen posters around my CMHT about support groups for family and friends of people suffering from BPD/EUPD.
Do they have anything like that in your area?

Yes, I have a copy. :)

I think [despite the title!] that it's really good. Very non judgemental and compassionate. It also has some good tips.

My mum and sister both live in different areas to me and each other, as me and my sister are both at uni. My sister was seeing a counsellor bu8t has quit cos she said she was rubbish. Plus I just don't think they have time to go to a group, but thanks for the suggestion, certainly something I'll keeo in mind.

Ok thanks, maybe it would be good for me as well then.
I just feel they need something to understand it more as I'm in a bad episode and I told them and my sister seems angry and distant with me and although my mum is coming to visit in a few weeks she didn't seem to get how serious it is. Just feel if they could read something that explained it well it may help them both.

I tend to stay away from the books as the condition is not a one size fits all, if your seeing someone for therapy then it might be worth asking them for any material thats out there that would be suitable.

I was given the book by the CMHT (and then sold it on amazon-sshhhh :P). But from my flicking through it was a good book for helping to explain BPD to people with little to no understanding- whilst any MH condition is unique to the individual the building blocks are similar- hence fitting into the diagnostic criteria. The books also good in the way its structured as in you don't have to read it cover to cover- can dip in and out of it.

I saw you'd posted in this thread and was like, Lillie hasn't read this, she sold it on Amazon!!

I read a fair bit of it BEFORE that :P

Which leads me to Katy (ytak- I think) biought it- she might know more.

I am actually in the process of reading this, a bit more than half way through. I have found it fairly good so far as it explains things in a simple easy to understand manner and does so in a non judgemental way. It also has some good tips on different coping strategies. I actually got access to it through my university library and was able to download it onto my tablet to read so didn't have to pay to read it.

Thanks all.

Yeah I realise a book is not perfect and that my EUPD is different to someone elses, but if they could read about the general idea of it and things it may help. I think my mum has looked on the Mind website for info and that is good, but maybe a bit short and I've tried to explain it to her but I feel reading it from someone else may help her more.

I haven't read it but have heard good things about I hate you don't leave me so that may be worth considering to

Stellata 22-04-2013 08:52 PM

If you were closer I'd loan you my copy. :)

But your local library should be able to get hold of it.

I haven't read that, but when I was first diagnosed I bought "the Borderline Personality Disorder Survival Guide", and I think that's brilliant, and explained everything non-judgmentally.

Still, I agree that a book is a book and can't possibly cover everything experienced by every individual.

thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I hadn't thought of getting it from the library! good idea.

Stellata 23-04-2013 07:14 AM
