Spambuster Mods
 

I once ran a forum on V2 with just enough privileges to edit and delete threads. I couldn't do much else. Why not make some SPAM deputy mods who are basically SPAM busters.

Not a bad idea, at least until we get that other suggestion (about imposing a minimum post count to be able to post links) up and running. Count me out though, I want no part of that job. :P

I suggested this the other day, and believe the answer was that it would be difficult to give anyone the appropriate powers without them being able to see ALL the modly things and do ALL the modly powers

Nice touch - "Spam Inspector Colbert" has a nice ring to it. Uniforms might be expensive at this time but a badge is doable

If the person had been here long enough maybe they could be trusted with having powers but not using them? I wouldn't mind being a spam removal officer lol, how about a system where if 5 or more report it as spam it gets deleted

Its not a case of having powera and not using them.....its about not having access to sensitive information about other members.if the spam issue waa in chat it would be fine because i can give people powers without allowing them forum access.

Its just something we all have to be patient about.

Im also unsure what you mean about it beinf reported 5 times.....we are usually aware of what spam is and we delete it as soon as we can.....if it was a xase of PRing threads 5 times for deletion i could invisiom lots of threads being deleted for no reason

I'll bet the resident code Mages here can do something. They are geniuses. Don't let them fool you with their mysterious nature ; )

I could have just deleted 8 threads and counting whilst all the mods are offline, the troll is still online so who knows how many you'll have to delete when you get on. I'm repkyokng 'reported' underneath so a)I can keep track of what i've reported and b) so others know it's been reported so hopefully you don't end up with thousands of PRs

If two users report the same thread then it goes into the same reported-post thread, so that part isn't really a huge hassle I don't think, it just means a bit of scrolling.

I agree with Liv that we just need to be patient, unfortunately as annoying as it is. It's just a pain because it builds up when the moderators are not online but when one pops on they are very efficient at removing it.

It might be something James could look into, he has helped us with spammers in the past.

One reason the SPAM posts are so unintelligible/peculiar is because they run them through translation apps. They probs originate from Eastern Europe somewhere. They are known for forum spam

Basically, we cant give anyone extra powers,however tempting it s. This would be a lot easier if there were more mods,but there arent so we do what we can. However annoying it is we understand, it stops us from doing our job and makes it incredibly frustrated.

We already are.

When Ruin Your Life became Recover Your Life and a new site was opened (in 2004) there was often one mod on most of the time - Linda MomofCutter/Angel Voice. What a zoo that was - trolls were all over the place. Harley did a good job cleaning that up eventually. RYL versions are like Star Wars movies to me now lol

I still speak to Linda on fb and she's coffee addict or something now, she occasionally pops up with an update
