Its all in the family?

im putting this here because its not really serious.. it is more leading on from a conversation in another thread, and i dont think it warrants being in a support board as it is meant for general (lighthearted) conversation.

So, are you from a long line of mentally ill people in your family, did you grow up with mentally ill parents etc, or did you just turn out a bit special?

see the poll, you can pick more than one answer

Im not laying down guidelines as to what constitutes as mental illness... im sure from witnessing your own families you will know.

:)

edit: nice alliteration!

They're all bonkers but I don't know about mentally ill... =P

Also, I appreciated the alliteration =D

My mother suffered from depression at around my age, and has always been narcissistic. However, I don't think there's anyone in the family who has suffered mental illness like I have.

Eeeeveryone in my family is crazy :P I literally don't think there is a member of my close family who doesn't have some kind of crazy going on.

random.swirls 30-11-2012 11:29 PM

My family are all 'sane'!

Apparently some random aunt was 'not up to saturday night' according to rumours at the time

I think there is/was a lot of PTSD and personality disorder in my family, but then there has been generations of trauma so it's not surprising.

yourockmysocks 30-11-2012 11:40 PM

I'm probably the most stable member of my family.

offlineforever 30-11-2012 11:42 PM

I am, as I have said in a few conversations;

A fourth Generation nutter!

My great grandma was sextioned in the era that EST was all the rage for something similar to hysteria.
My Grandmother had a nervous breakdown in her teens.
My mother has had several breakdowns.
I am currently floating around with the lovely diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, moderate/severe depression and generalised anxiety disorder.

I would have liked to be 'unique', but Mum had depression for a few years, started when I was three. My sister has had two or three bouts of depression.

MunchBox 30-11-2012 11:51 PM

My Mother is bat-**** crazy. No joke :D

She had Post-Natal Depression but she's still got a list of oddities that are longer than mine.
Apart from her, it seems like I'm the only special person in my family.

On my Dad's side there's a fair bit of depression and anxiety, nothing more than that though. ALL of the relatives on my Mum's side are a bit special, a few years ago about a third of the family (around 10 people) topped themselves. Was a bit of a domino effect I think but yeah, I was pretty much destined to be a loon. I'm currently the craziest in my family I think :|

xXMessedUpXx 01-12-2012 01:20 AM

Nobody in my immediate family is mentally ill..i'm the exception.

Though i do have a great aunt who has some MH problems, and she once told me my great grandmother had depression-i have no idea how true this is though.

makedamnsure 01-12-2012 01:34 AM

I have nearly the full list!
Dad - depression/co- dependency
Mum - depression (post natal and seasonal and after divorce)
Nan - not sure but she's been on citalopram virtually my whole life. I think depression, possibly some PTSD.
Brother - aspergers, depression
Uncle - schizophrenia

I'm sure there was a great great grandmother who commuted suicide at some point

My step mum is also bonkers and my cousins dad killed himself (but he wasn't blood related to me), my boyfriend has anxiety
So my conclusion is that the whole world is bloody mental.

The War Doctor 01-12-2012 01:39 AM

I'm not sure about legit diagnoses or anything, but my mum has definitely shown signs of anxiety and was once in therapy and on medication for depression. My dad shows occasional signs of paranoia and narcissism, and he has an explosive temper. So it's possible I inherited my issues from my mother, and my sister seems to have inherited her anger management issues from our dad. Years of therapy calmed her down a bit though. I really don't know about anyone from previous generations, though my aunt Janet has been called "f*cking mental" by several relatives.

Feel_Good_inc. 01-12-2012 01:39 AM

The issues with mental illness seem unique to me.

Though thanks to my gene pool I think I have a lot to expect in future, including baldness, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Woo hoo for me.

Morpheus 01-12-2012 04:03 AM

I am the only one in my family.

shadow-light 01-12-2012 04:45 AM

does alcoholism count as "mental illness"?

GlitterTrashDoll 01-12-2012 04:46 AM

I'm a special snowflake.

But I think my mums a bit special but she's adopted and u don't speak to her anymore, she has quite a few physical disabilities though. So I have no clue about all that and Or what tgat whole shindigs about. I just like to think I'm secretly related to someone famous. :D

what_the? 01-12-2012 09:53 AM

My Mum's side of the family is pretty normal. My Grandma is just a complete legend, but that's not the point of the thread.

My Dad's side has a fair dosage of crazy.
My Grandma suffered from depression and pretty nasty anxiety
My Uncle is completely mental. He's been through about every diagnosis possible and they've now basically settled on "Everything NOS".
My other Uncle got the anxiety bug
My Aunt was anorexic in her late teens and twenties, and still quite often hovers on the edge of a serious problem. Her two kids are very odd, although I think that might just be because they're a lot posher than me and I don't understand how they have southern accents, despite living near Newcastle.

My Grandpa and my Dad seem to be more or less okay, though.

I feel like I had to keep the crazy up, I look so much like my mum that it's just proof that my dad's genes are in there somewhere!
