Girl (period) issues *non-urgent*

I'm not sure if this thread really belongs in first aid but I dont know where else to put it.

Basically, i havent had a period in over 5 months. I dont think it's due to stress as I actually feel better than I have been previously. I'm underweight though and exercise regularly and I went to my GP awhile back and she presumed this was the reason for it (but gave no other help :/)

I'm just concerned over whether i should be worried or not? Does no period affect fertility or have long term health problems? Does this mean I wouldnt get pregnant (not that I'm planning to). I'm just concerned about it as i've always been very regular.

Thanks for any help x

It may be due to being underweight. I would suggest seeing your GP as 5 months is quite a long time. I'm no expert but my understanding is that irregular periods make becoming pregnant harder.

You should get tested for something called polycystic oviarian syndrom (PCOS). Not having a monthly cycle can effect your health but not for a while (I'm talking years). I wouldn't worry because the doctor won't do anything until you go a year with out it. Then they will most likely put you on birth control. I went through this when I was younger.

are you on any medication?
my periods disappeared for about a year and i got told that some meds could affect it.

all the above are good suggestions too!

There could be a lot of reasons and other hormonal problems too, not just PCOS. 1 thing, have you taken multiple preg tests. If not and there is any chance of you becoming pregnant in that time then I'd STRONGLY recommend you take some.

It's impossible to say about your future fertility without knowing the reason for this and it could be due to being underweight but there are many other reasons and therefore you need to go back and see your GP regarding this.

Also, as it looks like you've already seen your GP previously about not having your periods then really this unfortunately breaks the rules of the forum as you've sought medical help for it. Therefore I'm going to close it. If this is not the case and I've misread it then PM me and I can open it back up for you (as well as edit this post!).
