Self harm while having a child

I cut for the first time in years today and I felt such a sense of relief that I don't know if I'm going to do it again but my question is should I tell my Dbt therapist or keep it to myself because I have a 1 year son and she has said in the past that if I hurt myself he will be taken away from me.

I don't want to get caught up in the circle of self harm again so would like support but I'm scared social services will get involved enough I cut when he wasn't with me

Any advice would be appreciated

Maybe you could tell your therapist you've been getting urges to cut and hopefully then social services wouldn't get involved and you could get the support you need with trying not to cut.

^^ agreed. I didn't think they could do that, but better not to risk it. Maybe ask her to clarify what circumstances would get your son taken away from you? Just so you know?

Do you know what made you go back to cutting after so long? Are there other coping mechanisms you could use that won't risk your family?

Hope things get better for you sweetie - PM me anytime *hugs*

I don't think you cutting can make them take your children as long as you hide it from them. And as LNG as you're actively trying to stop. We had social services involved and they knew I was cutting but they never suggested taking the children away because of it.

I last cut when my daughter was two nearly three. She's five now. I stopped, and haven't started again because as she's getting older it will get harder to hide it from her and I don't want to be in that position.

hiya i was always very wary of talking to professionals because of this so i only ever said i feel like it as opposed to i've actually done it but one day i asked a psychologist on a support helpline over the phone if my son could be taken away from me if i admitted it and she said unless they thought i was a danger to him or actually doing it in front of him then no they wouldn't have any cause to do that.i don't know what the procedures are like in every country but thats what i know.i hope that helps :-)
