WHOA MODS.

Why ya'll standing down all of a sudden?
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE.

MissAnonymous 08-10-2012 10:03 PM

Just to ask, who Mod wise, is left?

I see Liz [Purple_Rain] and Liv [Griddlebone] about but is there now nobody else?

squirrelspit 08-10-2012 10:10 PM

Cam (radom.swirls) is active, and so is Ama (Amaryllis).

squirrelspit 08-10-2012 10:12 PM

i left cos of squish face, and to be honest, also because moderating had become a thankless bore... theres only so long you can wait for a head mod, new mods, some support, promised change to come about before you realise theres just no point.

sajhfuahuefghaeg 08-10-2012 10:18 PM

I'm still active.

random.swirls 08-10-2012 10:18 PM

Alex tears and rain is also around

[Purple_Rain] 08-10-2012 11:00 PM

I'm blue at the moment as I am recovery from a serious illness, so some days I'm around and some days I'm really not up to it. However this is only temporary and I will be red again soon.

Snow White. 08-10-2012 11:15 PM

Oh Liz! Get well soon <333

talaiporia 08-10-2012 11:41 PM

There are always lots of mods and exmods in Chat. Sometimes they outnumber the regulars!

Eccentrics 08-10-2012 11:44 PM

Oh there we go, now I'm in the know! Thankyou :)

I just noticed that quite a few mods had changed their name colours recently. (squirrelspit, [purple rain], Freedom Fighter made a post) It confused me, a lot of them seemed to be 'leaving' at once and I just thought "hold up! hold up!" (I know they weren't leaving RYL for good, I just can't find the right word right now.)

Also, I'm not too familiar with chat mods as I never used chat. Sorry guys! :( So that's maybe why I noticed/didn't notice/not quite sure which term is right here right now.

I'm very all over the place and flippity-floppity today!

cakey 09-10-2012 09:11 AM

I decided modding wasn't for me, a lot of pople i thought were friends changed when I became mod, and also I couldn't deal with how rude people were towards me, plus i got a bit ill mentally. I really take my hat off to those who are still mods, i failed, but we do still have some amazing people modding :)

griddlebone 09-10-2012 11:27 AM

It gets to the point where the bad points outweigh the good and the job becomes more of a millstone than anything else. I think more people live around this time of year because we get busy with school and so on.

RYL is too old- both the site and the community. The main site is never updated, which presents an image of an inactive community. And it's true, the community seemed much more "more" when I joined. :/ IMO shedding the skin that is RYL and applying what was learned from it towards something new, streamlined, and lively might be good for what is left of this community and other people online looking for a safe and friendly place to go.

Liv is spot on. Modding sucks the joy out of this website. After awhile, the site becomes a chore and a job.

Cynicism sets in after a while when you can see the user pages of everyone blazened with their past sins and you only see the shitty parts of life via the reports that you deal with. When you see enough people you liked/trusted doing things like encouraging people to self harm or flaming people only because they got board, it is very hard to have a positive outlook.

Friedrich Nietzsche said, “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.” It is very true. I spent too much time and energy trying to track down banned editors who were socking, subtle trolls and the like. In that process I became little better than them. If you look through my posts, especially in mod land, I became less and less civil and quicker and quicker to judgement. I went from being a mod who argued for leniency to one of the mods who was fairly willing to use bans liberally. This happens to most mods near the end of their cycle who became too involved with the behind the scenes part of the site.

I guess what I am trying to say is modding can, and does, suck. Sure there are great things about the job. Both teams are like your family and you come to rely on them but that does not outweigh all of the ****ing negatives of the job. That is why long term mods leave their positions many of them leave the site. I did when I RageQuit®.

Some, come back after a vacation from RYL.

A small group return to modding. Most of these zombie mods, like myself, last for a bit but they don't last. A wide man one said, "'It is impossible to love again anything you have truly ceased to love.' Members who return after retirement, or after a wearied or bitter departure, may post again, but never with the same passion they once brought to the community. Each successive return will be with diminished dedication and shorter duration." I was a zombie mod.

Some mods emerti come back from their vacation (or their second) and go into lighter staff roles or just as a normal community member, sometimes under a not well known username.

I am neither here or there. This is my first time on RYL in a 4 weeks or so. I am trying to get around finishing revising for my chem and philosophy exams.

Sorry for the TL;DR wall of text. I should go back to revising, rugby, uni life, wikipedia, reddit and beer. Have a good one.

Honestly I don't frequently pick through the categories, but I haven't noticed any changes. And the main page's theme/ layout looks really old. It might have been the pinnacle of web design 8 years ago, but not so much nowadays. :/

Field Of Paper Flowers 10-10-2012 02:11 PM

I stood down because I wasn't enjoying modding anymore and going into chat and having that responsibility to mod when all I wanted to do was relax and talk or get support was getting to me. I like not being a mod anymore, I can go into chat and not have to worry about having to do anything serious. I come home from work, out with my friends and all I really want to do is relax.

Plus some people are so ****ing rude in chat when all you try to do is help them, keep them safe etc and I was sick of feeling like **** because of that.

This. The main site's design is ****. It's like a labyrinth and you have to click through a million and one things just to get to where you want to go, if you even manage that. There's no consistency to it either. But without an entire website design change (*coughV4cough*) that's not going to change.

In fact, a lot of people never even use or even see the main site, and I can't say I blame them.

sajhfuahuefghaeg 10-10-2012 05:25 PM

I've never used the main site.
