Not coping depression getting worse and dr made me feel awful

Confessed to my dr I needed help again. He made me show him where i'd been cutting and he recoiled in horror and said 'eugh that's horrible' I feel disgusting the crisis team was supposed to ring me today and they haven't I just feel so alone. He's put me back on cymbalta I hope it works. I can't function day to day.

Im so sorry your doctor said that. I hate when they say something that makes you feel bad, when my dad made me show him my cuts he told me i looked like i got into a fight with a weed-wacker...and lost bad. And i know that made me feel terrible. If you ever want to talk i would love to PM and help you out, your not alone,I promise.i will be here for you if you want me to be.

That is genuinely one of the nicest things anyones ever said. I'm upset the mental health people haven't rang even though they'll probably just send me back to cbt. Which is stupid cos clearly it didn't work last time as I only finished it in april and I'm back to square one again.

hope you're ok, I'm really sorry I haven't any more words.

I'm sorry, I don't really have any helpful advice but I just wanted to say that your doctor had no right to say anything like that! He is a professional and should act like one. Honestly, your GP should have seen this sort of thing many times before, and even if not he should have known how to handle it maturely and supportively. It must have taken a lot of courage to show something so personal and he should have known this. You went to him for help, not to be insulted!

I'm so sorry you had to experience that. If you feel up to it, do you think you could make a complaint? Perhaps write a letter to the receptionist, who could pass it on to whoever deals with this sort of thing? That was out of order and a very unprofessional thing for your doctor to do.

I'm so sorry your crisis team didn't ring you, hun. Unfortunately, this seems to happen a lot as they get swamped or sidetracked or records get lost. Please be assured that this is not because they don't care about you or think you deserve help, you DO deserve help and this is probably just one of those things. x Could you maybe give them a call yourself and explain that they were meant to call you? Is there anybody else you could contact?

You are never alone, hun. I know you don't know me, but if you ever want to vent or even just chat you can PM me and I will always be here to listen x I hope that the cymbalta has some good results and you can get the help you need and deserve quickly. Depression is a horrible thing to have to suffer, and nobody should have to do it alone x

Thank-you guys I'm feeling a little better today I'm going to try write down what happened at the drs and give it to the receptionist i dont want to make a formal complaint as i cant be dealing with the hassle but i might suggest he needs some training in how to deal with mental health patients more tactfully in future. Thanks again for the support. *hugs*

What sort of techniques did CBT give you for coping with difficult times? Maybe uou just need a refresher and a little practice at putting some of the skills in place. It's easy to fall back to old coping mechanisms when things get hard.

Im sorry your gp made an insensitive comment but remember a lot of people even medical professionals have not come across self harm before. Maybe you could take the comment as a sign things are pretty bad and that you need more help? I once commented in a slightly insensitive way about my bro in laws eczema before I realised what it was. It was just pure shock at how bad it was and I didn't mean anything by it.

That's a fantastic idea!
I'm really proud of you for doing that, and for being so strong about your doctors remarks. It's not always easy making a complaint, formal or not! You should give yourself a pat on the back for that :) Maybe even treat yourself to something you enjoy. Your favourite meal? A day out with a friend? A relaxing bath?

I am so upset that your doctor reacted that way and said that to you. That is extremely insensitive and inconsiderate and quite rude actually. He needs more training, or a different career. Doctors can really be great at doing/saying the wrong things sometimes. I have taken cymbalta and it did help. Everyone's different, but I hope it works for you too! <3 *hopeful hugs*
