Why are my cuts white on the inside for a while before they start to bleed?

Whenever I cut myself (I cut on my lower leg) then I always see white underneath, and the blood takes a little bit to start bleeding, Why is this? And what is the white I am seeing? Connective tissue?

Scaredy-cat 24-06-2012 09:15 PM

Whilst i dont know how deep your gping, and tou cant really describe it here, i sometimes get this at a certain depth, and at that point it isnt connective tissue, its just sort of a layer down, where the blood vessels are distributed differently to higher up, which is why it looks a bit different.
However, its possible that your looking at something different,i cant really tell. Just my experience

I don't really know, it could be fat?

Either way, you need to be careful as you are potentially running the risk of hitting someone that could cause you serious long-term damage. Also, you will be prone to infection.

Do you have any support with this?

A_Bright_Red_Scream 24-06-2012 09:32 PM

I don't think I go deep enough for it to be fat, I hope that's not it, it might be what scardy cat said.
None of my friends or family knows I self harm. But I just very recently started seeing a therapist. I really hope she helps. I'm going to my second session thursday.

It's really positive that you are seeing a therapist and you have your second session shortly. It'll take time but you'll get there. Well done for reaching out and please take care of yourself. Maybe this thread is something to discuss with them?

Fat is yellow & 'bobbly' so it's not that

This!

I tried to find a diagram because I'm interested to know too. I THINK it's the 'Dermis' (Your 'outside skin' is the epidermis) & it's made up of collagen & Elastin. I could be very wrong though! *waits for someone medical to come along*

This used to happen to me too. Its not fat as fat is... below the white. I guess its just .. skin really lol. This should be a question for KimA/B really.

This sounds like a first aid question.

Not sure how to word this..
When my cuts are delayed in bleeding it's usually bc they're shallower. Not sure why, and I could be wrong/weird.

Regardless cutting still isn't a *good* thing, at any level.
If you feel safe, try talking to your therapist about it.

A_Bright_Red_Scream 26-06-2012 02:55 AM

I looked at a diagram too, and i too think it's the dermis. I don't think it's far enough to be the fat and it doesn't look like fat. Normally I have the delayed bleeding if I go deeper strangely, and if I go shallower then it bleeds right away, it could just be our bodies working differently though :/
And thanks everyone. Yeah I really like my counsellor so far, so I hope everything works out. If anyone wants to answer another question on here, for anyone who sees a therapist, do you go once or twice a week? Or every other week?

Scumbelina 26-06-2012 03:04 AM

I go every week but I have skipped weeks if I'm busy or he does this meeting thing

musicmad123 27-06-2012 10:14 PM

at the moment i see my cpn around once a month if i'm luicky(she's way too busy) and atm i'm doing dbt so i see the therapist once a week and i have group once a week. I think if it's less than every two weeks, it's not going to be as helpful
