New psychiatrist

I'm seeing my new psychiatrist on tuesday. Apparently she is "lovely" and "very thorough" but I'm nervous. I've not properly seen a psychiatrist in about three years (barring the emergency appointment I had at christmas).

I want to talk about my diagnosis, because I'm being treated for Recurrent Depression currently but I don't agree with it. I've written down all of my symptoms and I want to ask her about them but some psychiatrists get funny when you say you don't agree with your current treatment. I've been on the same meds for three years too with no review.

How do I go about this in a way that means she'll help me and listen to me? My major fear is of being dismissed and not being listened to.

I don't see why there should be a problem with a re-evaluation to be honest.7

I have one appointment left with my dr as he is leaving and then I am seeing the consultant. I am actually planning to ask for my diagnoses to be looked at and have written a letter. I've said the reason being, is that things change, I've made progress but I still struggle with other things that have now come to the forefront since being stable on medication etc and that I feel the best chance of me continuing to make progress would be if my needs are recognised and hence can then get the appropriate treatment.

I think you should be vocal and tell her your worries of being dismissed. I would assume that she will probably ask you what you are currently struggling with too as you say its been a while since you have had a review.

Anyways, good luck. I hope it goes well :)

Thanks :)

I've written down the things I want to talk about so I don't forget.

How did it go?

Yeah it went well. She really listened to me and took me seriously, and she thinks I have bipolar disorder. Been started on mood stabilisers so we'll see how that goes!

I'm glad it went well for you
