Private abortion clinics advertising on the media.
 

I was listening to LBC 97.3FM and they were talking about private abortion clinics advertising on TV, radio etc; this starts from tomorrow.

What do you think about this?

My understanding is that they have always been able to, as long as they weren't a profit-making organisation. The only difference is that now profit-making clinics can advertise. And it's not going to be "come get your abortions here!" type advertising, they will be advertising under the guise of 'post-conception advice', which isn't just abortion, and probably offer advice on other sexual health and family planning services.

If a woman wants an abortion, she will get one, I don't see what the advertising will do.

I'm pro-choice, but feel really weird about abortion clinics being advertised. I would much rather women were advised to see their GPs to discuss their options in what must, for many, be a difficult and distressing time.

As long as it doesn't become a sales pitch. 'come get an abortion, next ones half off!' then I see nothing wrong with informing women of their options following conception

They're a private business and they have every right to advertise their services, even if some people find that service morally dubious. People who want abortions will get them whether they're advertised or not. People who are against abortion won't. It's that simple.

Yeah, advertisements are obviously designed to be persuasive but with a decision like that no one is going to be anywhere near flighty enough about it that the advertisement will make a difference to whether they have the abortion or not. So relevant information about where the place is and a bit of detail on what they have to offer will only serve as helpful and convenient IMO.

I think safe, medically supervised abortion clinics SHOULD be advertised. Women who want abortions will get them and I would rather it be by qualified medical practitioners in a sterile environment than by some hack who wants to exploit vulnerable women to make a profit, while leaving them susceptible to infection and other complications that come with it AS WELL AS the trauma that abortion can cause anyway.
Even the pre-op advice is valuable; they let people know of the options they have and whether or not abortion is the right one for them. Private clinical care is the best way to ensure the needs/wants of the individual patient are met.
