Psychiatrist appointment-not sure what I want
 

My clinical psychologist agreed to refer me back to to the psychiatrist for a medical review. I discharged myself as the psychiatrist wanted me to try yet another medication, but my CP doesn't think they will help. My CP thinks that the appointment will be a waste of time and leave me disappointed, but I don't feel my appointments are moving me on and every thing goes round in circles. Has anyone got any suggestions on what I should say or anything that is relevant? I get the impression that they don't ever read the records prior to the appointment. Thanks.

A review of your diagnosis, perhaps?

Maybe ask them to review how they came to your current diagnosis and to review whether that is correct.

It may also be worth going through your notes with them in the appointment - as this way, you know they will be looking at them.

Thanks. I will ask them about my diagnosis, although it is a new psychiatrist which doesn't help as I don't know what to expect. It's a good idea to ask them to go through the notes. One time they wanted to try me on a medication that I'd already been on. I was going to ask my CP before the appointment, but he cancelled on me.

I normally talk any new psych through my notes. Makes sure you are both on the same page.

I've never thought to do that before. I have written notes down for them to read through, but it didn't really help. I want them to say that I don't have BPD, but I can't see that happening. What I really want is a MRI to prove that there is nothing wrong, but I know I'll be disappointed. The worst part is I have to go to work after and pretend that I'm fine.

Surely an MRI wouldn't prove anything either way? Because BPD isn't a neurological illness, so I don't know whether there would actually be any difference between a person's brain with BPD and without.

And I don't think in one meeting they'd be able to say that you don't have BPD, because BPD is a diagnosis made when a psych has known a patient for long enough, so they can't just remove that diagnosis the first time they meet someone.

Have you thought about why you want the BPD label removed?

I was given the BPD diagnosis by a psychiatrist after a short visit. He thought I was making something up, which made me seem paranoid and I was actually going through a court case at a time. I had a head injury when I was younger and I guess I just want to know if did anything. My Cp is also a neuropsychologist and said not, but still it makes me wonder. There have been some studies that show BPD shows a different MRI scan.
