I don't know who I am..

I finally came clean and told my psychiatrist about everything..I have voices in my head, they are people. I talk to them and they talk to me..They tell me to do things, like hurt myself or throw up. I see things that aren't real, I hear people talking about me or planning to hurt me, even if they most likely aren't. I feel like I'm not living i reality, like the world is a dream. I also do, say, or go through things and don't remember the whole thing, or any of it. It scared me when the doctor began talking about me getting my brain tested. Is there something wrong with me? Or am I just crazy..

There's so many reasons that people might hear voices in their heads. They may be psychological, or psychiatric, or a mixture. It sounds like your psychiatrist is checking to see whether or not there's a physical cause that could be picked up by a brain scan.

It does sound like a very frightening thing to be going through. But you may find that a number of people here on RYL hear voices or experience commands that tell them to do things to themselves. One important thing to remember is that you are in control of your choices - so, even if voices tell you to do things, you don't have to entertain them. You don't have to hurt yourself, even though it can feel like you do.

I also identify a lot with not knowing who you are. I wonder if anyone really knows who they are, but I also feel that voices can try and take away a lot of who you are. You're still there, though, underneath all the pain.

Who would you like to be? Can you think of any ways you can achieve that?

I see things that aren't there and hear voices on occasion. I've found that they get dramatically worse when I am stressed. Pay attention to yours and see if they get worse when you're really stressed. If so, you can help yourself by finding ways to relax - like meditation or anything you enjoy that is quiet and calm.
