What is disassociation?
Someone told me I dissasosiate (sp?) but I don't quite understand what it means.
Could someone explain please? Thanks |
Dissociation [no 'a'] is where you separate aspects of your psyche off from you when things get overwhelming. This might be separating your mind off from your body [not feeling physically real], your feelings from your thoughts [going emotionally numb or overly intellectual], yourself from your surroundings [world and others don't feel real], parts of the personality from each other, and so forth. It is a defence, but, paradoxically can feel more frightening than the thoughts, feelings, memories or present experiences that you're trying to escape from.

Thankyou for explaining it to me.
It was said to me because I do things and then have no memory of it, or only a partial memory. It feels really really frightening. When I'm "not in my head" Ifrom what I can work out and have been told, I sometimes do completely normal things... like apparently I was sat in A&E teaching a paramedic sign language... which is something I would definetly do, but I have absoloutely no memory of it happening. Then another time I ran off and my husband found me 5 miles away. I really don't know how to stop it happening but its really scary to feel like I lose control. |
Dissociation is all about disconnections in the psyche. Therapy can help form connections and bridges.
