Pink's 'shocking' new video...

Okay, so I was on the internet today & came across Pink's new video... it's called 'F***in' Perfect' & I think it's a fantastic song. However it does contain:
The following content has been hidden - Reason : Triggering to some? xx
  • Self-harm (however you don't see much, & very exaggerated)
  • Anorexia (just stepping on the scales)
  • Attempted suicide
  • About two seconds of drugs use
  • Bullying
People have said this video & song glamorizes eating disorders & self-harm. In my opinion, it doesn't as there really isn't much of it. If you listen to the song properly instead of just watching the video, you'll see that the message is clear:
  • No matter what people say or do to you, don't you ever feel like you're less than anyone else.
Pink's defended herself, saying that she wanted to show what mental illnesses are like & to increase understanding, but even though I do understand the message in the video (& song) myself, I'm not sure other people (people without mental health problems) will. If she wanted to increase awareness about mental health, she could've done it in a better way. Saying that, I still like the video though.

Do me a favour. Before you post a reply here, watch the video (since the mods had to remove the link - & I fully understand the reason for doing so - you'll have to look it up yourself) & then give me your thoughts.

Just watched it. I think it's amazing. I don't see how that's glamorizing anything! The message I got is that she wants to show how those behaviors are a result of people feeling less than their peers and shows a lot of compassion to people going through that type of stuff. It shows a lot of pain, and I don't think it makes any of that look good in the slightest. Simply shows they shouldn't be judged for it as it is a result of a lot of pain growing up. People really take things so literally. I think it does raise awareness, whether people choose to actually listen to the real message and have empathy for those who struggle, who knows, but I don't see how P!nk glamorized anything.

That's exactly how I felt when I watched it. In my head, I think that there will be children who watch this video & may think that self-harm is a good idea. I'm not sure how likely it would be though... it moves me, in a good way, though, but not to do anything bad.

I love Pink & I love this song x

Loved the video, the only bit I thought was slightly glamorised was the blood in the bathtub scene, but even that might be just my stupid side going *wants*

Very potentially triggering, but more importantly really hard hitting *likes*

Link didn't work for me, can you find the official video on youtube for me so I can watch?

The link doesn't work because RYL has edited the word... so just replace the 'xxxx' with the actual letters & it should work.

Didn't find it shocking nor triggering, have seen far worse before.

That said, I like the song :)

I've not seen far worse before because I know that sort of stuff is bad for me. I did watch it yesterday morning and it has really, really hit me as in, made me actually cry and I rarely, rarely cry. Personally, I didn't find it glamourising self-harm nor eating disorders because you can see how unhappy the girl was in the video. Also, you can't say you're 'giving people ideas' because, chances are, they'll get them anyway. I liked that the video was seemingly understanding about self-harm and eating disorders and showed that any problem really can make these happen. It also showed hope and that there was a silver lining for people trapped in this cycle.

I did have to look after myself a lot after the video however, but that might just be because I'm stupidly sensitive and struggle with these things.

The One Who 22-01-2011 12:28 PM

Is this really any worse than some of her other videos? Think Like a Pill, Family Portrait and Stupid Girls. OK, so this is slightly more graphic in the blood department, but it's obviously not saying that it is a good idea.

I didn't really get the eating disorders link, just because she stood on a scale? Yes, she was thin, but then if you took the clothes off everyone else you'd probably find she wasn't any thinner than anyone else. And some people are just naturally slim. Or maybe that's just my take on it.

On the subject of awareness, I don't see it. It's not raising awareness of these issues and certainly not of mental health problems.

akita 22-01-2011 12:37 PM

I didn't find that triggering at all.

Bellatrix 22-01-2011 12:38 PM

I loved it.

If a girl in pain is glamorising, then that's just pathetic.

Lyddie 22-01-2011 12:41 PM

I personally don't think that it glamourises anything. She was unhappy in the video when she was self-harming and struggling over her weight. And then when she expressed herself through her painting and life started getting better she was happier. Didn't seem glamourising at all to me.

And I don't get triggered by things like that, so I just really liked it. I love Pink far too much :P

Imperfect.Star 22-01-2011 01:13 PM

I really like it. I wasn't expecting too but both the song and the video hit the right spot for me. I think it tried to demonstrate how something people see as an attention seeking behaviour comes out of intense and difficult feelings (often of self-hatred) which are difficult to vocalise.

Susu. 22-01-2011 02:01 PM

As you've all said here already i don't think it glamourizes the behaviours in anyway, yes it shows them, but since when did showing a behavior in a pretty realistic light glamourize it?

The video and lyrics did actually really get to me, but not in a bad way. I think it will help those out there who struggle with these things to see they're not so alone and hopefully will spread a little understanding for those who don;t know what its like and have never struggled. Kudos to you pink :)

Keyboard Warrior 22-01-2011 02:04 PM

I love this.

I don't see how being honest about things is glamourizing.. I didn't find it triggering, but whatever.

This is what Pink said on her official website:

A Personal Note From P!nk:
"I'm sure my newest video for "F**kin’ Perfect" will be much like some of my other videos, which basically means I expect it will ruffle some feathers.
My favorite books, art pieces, films, and music, always have something jarring about them. I want art to make me think.
In order to do that, it may piss me off, or make me uncomfortable. That promotes awareness and change, or at least some discussion.
That is my intention.
You can't move mountains by whispering at them.
Cutting, and suicide, two very different symptoms of the same problem, are gaining on us. (the problem being; alienation and depression. the symptoms; cutting and suicide). I personally don't know a single person who doesn't know at least two of these victims personally. A lot of us have seen certain starlets showing off their latest scars on a red carpet somewhere, usually right before they head back to their favorite rehab.
Its a problem, and its something we should talk about.
We can choose to ignore the problem, and therefore ignore this video, but that won't make it go away.
I don't support or encourage suicide or cutting.
I support the kids out there that feel so desperate/numb/powerless, that feel unseen and unheard, and can't see another way.. I want them to know I'm aware. I have been there. I see them.
Sometimes that's all it takes.
Making this video was a very emotional experience for me, as was writing this song. I have a life inside of me, and I want her or him to know that I will accept him or her with open and loving and welcoming arms. And though I will prepare this little munchkin for a sometimes cruel world, I will also equip this kid to see all the beauty in it as well. There are good people in this world that are open-minded, and loving. There are those that accept us with all of our flaws. I do that with my fans/friends, and I will do that with my child, whoever they decide to be."
