Pain

So, i've been noticing that when i have a pain from something else i get a really strong urge to SI.
At the moment i've been getting really bad back pain and i keep wantin to hit myself or cut or something because it feels like it wil reduce the other pain.
Doe that make any sense?

I was wondering if that was the same for anyone else. Do they SI to try and reduce physicsal pain?

Yes, it makes sense. Period pain used to be a major trigger for me.

I believe that its something to do with how self harming is more within your control, whereas backpain, period pain, headaches and suchlike are for the most part out of our control.
It is a kind of instinct to feel the need to have some control. Especially when other areas of our lives feel out of control, and physical pain in the body reminds us of that.

Yeh, that definitely makes sense.
It might be something to do with thefact that it reminds you of the pain that you are addicted to - or as Katie said above - it may be something to do with control.
Maybe try to get some painkillers for your back pain? Or go to the doctors?
Hope you'll be ok :)

yes i know what you mean, i do it a lot i think it's because i can control the pain i'm creating and it just takes my mind off the other pain.

IceBreak 03-06-2007 08:23 PM

Yeah i understand it as I used to do that as well it was just well to make the pain more visable as i felt i had no control over pain i couldnt see and this made me want to see it. I know that maybe sounds weird but it was the way i used to think bout it all.

We kinda think that SI/SH can fix anything, so you automatically want to do it, cause you think it'll help reduce the other pain.

Amie 04-06-2007 05:21 AM

yeah it makes sense, i do that and i think alot people do it to

claireyfairy 04-06-2007 09:23 AM

yeh so true, i get triggered by headaches and tiredness sometimes too

bright.side.of.life 05-06-2007 12:42 PM

i can relate to what everyone has said, it makes sense to want to control the pain. but i find that when i have another injury or pain, i dont si like usual, i will deliberatly make the pain from the injury worse. if that makes sense? i recently had a sprained ankle, and instead of resting it i deliberatly kept walking on it and jumping and stuff. might just be me being odd tho...

but your not alone on this one. hope your back gets better soon!

I used to hurt myself when i had other kind of pain for that very reason, but since the i figured heh i'm already in pain, why make it any worse?

Makes alot of sense, i usually give into the urges, which is weak of me but you should try and beat it :) Good luck, Hugs.

I've never had it myself, I can't remember having been in pain in ages, that wasn't caused by me. But it makes sense to me that it could, just because it fits in with the control aspect.

I have never had this, but i can see how it makes sense. It sucks to be in pain ((non-SI pain that is!!!))...are you on meds for the back pain?

If your doctors are just giving you codeine & paracetamol/acetaminophen...or telling you to eat ibuprofen and your still in bad pain ((and it must be bad pain cos your willing to s-injure over it))...then you should really press the doctor for better pain relief, or go to a pain clinc.

There you are MUCH more likely to be prescribed strong opiate painkillers, cos lets face it, codeine and tramadol ((paracetamol is useless, ibuprofen can be ok for inflammation, yet sucks as a REAL painkiller)) just aren't good enough.

I know how pain can ruin you life, i've had severe pain before. The only thing that helped me was taking powerful opioids like pethidine. You may find oxycodone, morphine, or methadone excellent pain-killers. These meds are the best analgesics on earth. They allow you to be lucid, yet they drastically reduce, if not eliminate, pain.

Speak to your doc about getting GOOD pain relief. And if codeine or tramadol just isn't good enough, go back and demand better pain relief. They have the ability to stop or minimse your pain a LOT...they are just usually reluctant to do so ((easy for them; they aren't the ones in pain!)).

Good luck! I hope you get good pain relief from MEDS, so that you don't have to resort to s-injuring!
