Mirtazpine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirtazapine
Iam on 30mg of it. I deal with Depression, anxiety, paranoia and ocd and i had a horrible time trying to get to sleep so i was told to come off citraopram by my gp slowly and im on this now and it helps me get a good sleep and that's all it does, still feeel down etc and just after a couple of hours of being up i start to feel very drowsy sleepy, horrible and i hav eto sit down and i have a snooze and i ache a fair bit as well. Anyone felt the same on this? |
Hi,
I've not taken mirtazipine but it is a good antidepressant for a lot of people. The odd thing about it is that when you start it at a low dose it can make you sleepy but as you increase the dose that effect reduces. Maybe if your Dr is planning on increasing your dose it will reduce the feeling which comes a while after you take it. Just a theory. |

If you feel it isnt helping, you need to go vack and discuss tjhat iwth whoever prescribed it. May be that they are keeping the dose low for the sedative effcet?
Its done absolutely nothing for me either...not the slighest bit of sedation/help with insomnia. |

I don't think it's helped my moods either, at first it made me very drowsy like you, but now it has no effect on me whatsoever.
Perhaps you should discuss this with the professional who prescribed you it & ask their opinion on this? They may be able to change it for you. |
it worked like a dream for me with my sleep and gradually brought my mood more stable and up abit keep with it chick x
|
How long have you been taking it?
As has been mentioned, once you go above 15mg then the sedation effect basically wears off and people find it hard to sleep again. I was on this drug previously and massively helped my depression and anxiety. Go back to your doctor and tell them how you are feeling. It might be you need to try something else. |

Any thoughts? iam getting the drowsy effect when i didnt take my med and when i didnt take my med since i have to take my med befoe i go to my bed iam paranoid about taking my med at night if i have had a drink incase it make me die in my sleep, now that sound hilarious. but that is how i feel:sad: |
The reason they tell you not to drink alcohol and take mirtazapine is because it can make you feel more drowsy/drunk than usual. http://mental-health.emedtv.com/mirt...d-alcohol.html
I assure though that having a small moderate amount of alcohol and then later taking your medication before you go to sleep will not cause you to die! :) It is best to be consistent with taking medication and not skip doses! |
I am guilty of skipping doses i will be honest but there are times when i have not drank for a few days and STILL felt drowsy after taking the med.
Is it safe to take the med then and have a few for the bells tonight?? |
I personally do not drink at all because I am on medication. Not a drop. However, if you feel you want one or two, then its down to you. Doctors would advise against it for the reasons that the medication will be affected by the alcohol (alcohol is a depressant, and you are taking an anti-depressant, doesnt have a good effect- you'll probably feel more tipsy/drunk and the med wont be lifting your mood).
It's down to you really and what you feel comfortable with. |
Well i was going to have 4 cans of strongbow tonight....
The reason as i said before the reason why i didnt take my mitrazapine when having a drink at night was with Mitrazapine having sedavite qualities and alcohol well being a depressent i didnt and was quite frankly scared of somethng happining to me while i slept if i had a drink on top of my meds:sad:   paranoia yes but that's how i felt. How have people fekt after having a couple of drinks a couple of hourse while taking their mitrazapine?. |
1 or 2 cans maybe, by 4 you would probably feel worse for wear. And you are correct in that alcohol and mirtazapine both have sedative qualities so you have to be very careful.
Why dont you ring or pop into a chemist and speak to the pharmacist. They know all about this stuff. |
What about on new years day if i have a couple of glasses of wine at dinner with my mum before i take my mitrazapine tablet before i go to bed?
|
I think you should ask a pharmacist. There should be some 24 hour or late night ones open where you live, even on NYE.
|
It took 5/6 weeks for mirtazapine to show signed of workign for me, so stick it out. it originally helped wiht my sleep but my sleep problems seem to be comming back.
i dont drink, but if i did i wouldn't drink on this stuff. |
^ As said, it can take weeks before it has the 'right' effect, but if you're worried, please see your doctor.

How long does mitrazapine STAY In the system?? i have not been taking them for about 3 days to be honest for 2 reasons
1.Iam feeling drowsy a lot and sleeping on and off in the afternoon. 2.Having a drink at xmas/new year. I went to bed this morning at 5am and i didnt wake up till 4.30PM,missing all my day and i still feel a bit drowsy and tired. And the day before i slept from 9am till 3.30pm. Iam going to stop taking them and when i see my dr on the 5th jan i will tell him why im not wanting them and that i want to go back on to ciatropram. so how long does mitrazapine stay in the system? |
