Sectioned?

Who here has been sectioned? Also where and why?

I was sectioned a few months ago first in an acute ward under section 2 which wasn't to bad all. Then again in a medium-secure under section 3 which was awful all it was is restraints and injections. My doc wanted me on a depot and I wouldn't have it at home is the reason for my sectioning. I fight MHS all the way.

Susu. 30-12-2010 10:05 PM

Why do you fight the MHS? Do you not think they help?
I don't know much in this area but i do know that being voluntarily admitted is a thousand times better than being sectioned...

Morpheus 30-12-2010 10:13 PM

I've been sectioned twice. Both times because I was in danger to myself and others and refused treatment. I have also been hospitalized voluntarily which to be fair, wasn't that much different as I didn't have much choice anyway. I was informed that if I refused, I would be sectioned and placed in a secure ward instead.

Can I ask why you want to know?

Susu. 30-12-2010 11:00 PM

why i want to know why you think the MHS don't help? Because i think it's good to be able to concretely say why you think something because when it remains abstract it also remains harder to combat. I think that talking these things through with people can help you get an objective view which can be very useful.

I went through a phase of finding it very difficult to cope with something and during that time I was sectioned by the police multiple times. On the most recent occasion I was informally admitted to hospital - although similar to Qvazzy, I was told that if I refused they would section me and admit me anyway. I only had to stay for 3 days, but it was still a really scary experience.

And the sections have pretty much screwed up my life, in that I will almost certainly never work in the career I wanted to work in before that. I would do anything to change my past, I look back now and wonder how I ever let it all get so bad.

Fighting the help you are getting in the end will not benefit you - as thund3rthighs asked, why it is that you're fighting the MHS? Do you feel any better when you have the medication? If you don't think the help you've been getting has been beneficial, is there anyone else you can ask to be referred to?

Droplet 31-12-2010 06:21 AM

I have been sectioned a few times in various situations where I was out of control - not in control of myself and dangerous. Always I find myself seeing things in a different light when I am well though, what about you? I can always see how the doctors were concerned. But still, it doesn't take away how frightening and alone-ifying (new word of mine!) the experience can be.

Overall though I am very glad they did it and usually after a short time in hospital although I am not well I am in a much better place in my head. One thing that helps me is not thinking about it in an 'us' and 'them' kinda way.

I've been sectioned once when I was 13.
It didn't really help & I got worse when I was released.

Why are you against the MHS?
There are crap professionals out there, but there are also many who have saved peoples lives & helped peoples lives a great deal.

I wanted to see if peoples experience with sectioning was unfair by the MHS as in if they had been sectioned and they felt they didn't need it like I went in with problems and came out insane. They really don't do me any good and the drugs i'm on are going to cause me problems when i'm older , thats why I hate MHS.

How do you mean they believed your lies?

Cryptic. 31-12-2010 11:52 AM

I think Dasher means they were fooled & tricked them into thinking Dasher was not a risk therefore the section was lifted.
If not, ignore me!
:)

Yep thats usually how it works at psych wards - apparently the ones who don't kick off don't need to be there and don't have any problems.

Cryptic. 31-12-2010 12:30 PM

Not always, sometimes the ones who are extremely depressed, isolate themselves, are suicidal & have attempted it & are mostly mute/not socializing with others are the ones who are less likely to be released too.
In my psych ward, a lot of people did kick off. But most of the time, the other patients triggered it. ie; I was bullied in there, when this girl kicked me, I kicked off. There was another girl who kicked off when other people took the piss out of her eating disorder.
I didn't see much kicking off though.
I saw a lot of crying, and there was a suicide attempt made by another patient. She was put in isolation.

TheColdOne 31-12-2010 12:36 PM

In medium-secure theres loads of kicking off the main thing done in the hospital that I went to is tieing ligatures with clothes, then they were restrained into big blue safe suits. I just stayed out of it , I did get restrained and injected when I tried to abscond from the HDU ward. What type of psych ward were you in Sarawr?

That's my experience of it too.

Cryptic. 31-12-2010 12:44 PM

I was in an adolescent ward, not sure the type!
I'm sorry you went through that <3

TheColdOne 31-12-2010 12:49 PM

Did you experience the restraints? Not nice at all esp when it's big black men =(

This is what I did. I left my room to use the toilet and nothing more (apart from when I bolted in a panic). I never went for food or spoke to anyone else apart from the member of staff observing me. Just mainly lost myself in DVDs or slept really.

My room was locked during the day so I couldn't isolate, at my first hospital it was like my home and I loved all the patients there , in my second secure unit I didn't speak to anyone and would sleep all day as well. There are some really good hospitals out there though I would love to go back to my old one because I don't have a life outside.

whirlpools 31-12-2010 02:24 PM

I totally agree with Sarawr about people being ill and not kicking off. In my experience, it's sometimes people who do kick off who aren't taken seriously, because the staff on my ward know when people are putting it on in order to stay longer (some people do that. And I'm not saying their difficulties aren't genuine, just that they go the wrong way about getting help).

I personally hated being sectioned, because I felt so much more restricted than when I'd been in voluntarily. I was lucky to have 2 hours escorted leave per day but that wasn't enough - spending too much time on the ward with its lack of stimulus is enough to drive me to despair. That said; I'm glad they did it. I wouldn't be alive without it.

I wonder why there have been so many posts about sectioning recently. I think this time of year unsettles people.

I have been sectioned once, but far more informal admissions alongside other sectioned patients.

Being sectioned I feel contributed to my agoraphobia which started after I was discharged, because when on section I was not allowed outside of the hosital at all for the first couple of months, then after that I was only allowed out with a nurse for half an hour or so. When I was discharged it had been six months since I had been out by myself.

Cacoethes 31-12-2010 05:19 PM

i have been sectioned 6 times since, am currently on section 3 for a year and am appealing.

i hate being sectioned, this time around when i was sectioned, i agreed to go to hospital, but they said, nope, we'll section you anyway. im not sure why, can anyone help me with this?
