The campaign to highlight distracted driving offenses will mirror a similar two-day enforcement effort last year, during which more than 700 cell phone citations were issued by law enforcement in Santa Clara County and more than 550 drivers were ticketed by CHP officers throughout the Bay Area.
Cell phone use is the leading identifiable source of distracted driving and inattention stated on collision reports in California, according to the CHP.
Other identified sources of distracted driving are applying makeup, using global positioning equipment, eating, drinking, changing music and reading.

I saw a cyclist turning a corner at a junction on the North Circular yesterday, whilst talking on his phone and not looking at the traffic around him or where he was going. Thankfully the person whose car I was a passenger in saw him, or it could have been very nasty.

Its not a crackdown on phones in general. Driving and using a phone can kill.

Seriosusly I don't know how anyone can even play with there phone while driving!!!

I'm learning and I don't have a moments second to even consider looking at my phone. Half the time I don't even take it on my lesson

They had a programme on bbc3 ages ago, it was a promotional thing about dont use a phone and drive, how she killed her 2 best friends and the aftermath and going to prision, was abit graphic though.

Texting while driving isn't allowed here either.

NZ just banned it. though people do still do it.
but there are a lot of people killed or injured here from that

They tried to pass that law here a few months ago, but it didn't pass... I'm all for it!!!

Using a mobile in any capacity whilst driving should be banned.
I don't know what the penalty here is, but I'm assuming it's a fine?
It should result in points on your license.

I recently passed my test, but I couldn't possibly use my phone and drive. I'm I'm stuck in traffic or at a red light I might check it, and if I'm badly stuck I'll text my parents to tell them. Never whilst on the move. Correct me if I'm wrong but I suspect it's points and a fine.

If I catch my Dad attempting to phone/text, I have a major go at him :/

When I was in Germany, I was travelling with my exchange partner and her dad, and while her dad used his phone, she controlled the steering wheel. It was bloody scary.

I nearly got bashed into yesterday by some idiot texting whilst approaching a junction. I was walking and there is a hatched area so that pedestrians can cross over and she went right over it [despite markings, and there being no space the other side to pass into].

It infuriates me when people use a phone whilst driving, and it f*cks me off even more when said person bangs on about how bad drink driving is, oblivious to the fact they're doing the same.

i must admit i do sometimes use my fone when driving
it is a dangerous thing to do though.

and completely illegal...

I rang my dad the other day and when he picked up I found out he was driving so I hung up on him, phoned my mother who was in the passenger seat and asked her to confiscate his phone and shout at him.
She did.

Good mother.

i reckon most things are dangerous when driving
what about smoking, eating,drinking, working the CD player or sat nav
soon they will ban everything
