Swimming
Hi
I know there must be quite a few threads about this but... I really want to go swimming. Not really with friends or anyone. But I have quite a few scars on my arm. I've been free from cutting for a few months now so they're all healed... just noticeable. So yeah just looking for some encouragement if that's possible. I chicken out of doing so much because of SI. Also for those who've gone swimming, do people stare much or have your experiences been ok? Thanks |
I've gone swimming recently, and I will say that my experiences for the most part have been okay. Some people have stared at me, and a couple of people have asked me about my scars... but, that being said... my scars are quite bad... I don't know how noticeable yours are... but, when you're swimming most of the time people aren't going to notice much just because you're moving around a lot and it's harder for people to see scars especially if you keep your arms underwater. :)
Good luck if you decide to try it out, I hope that it all goes well for you! Take care. xx |
By and large, people are there to swim not to look at other people. Also, once in the water everything gets obscured anyway so no one would see.

I'm going on holiday in a week so I'll have to go swimming.
Don't worry about it. Do you go around staring at peoples arms at the swimming pool? Most people don't. Just keeps your arms facing towards yourself or down when out of the pool, and that should make it less noticable to people. And when you're in the pool - well, nobody will really see it anyway :) Good luck and take care :) x Hope you have a good time! |
you could always take your towel to the edge of the pool and keep it round you till just before you jump in. I used to do that just because i felt self concious and so did my sister not related to self harm at all. once your in the water noone will notice because water distorts things stuff plus noone will be looking.
just go and have a lovely time :) xxx |
Hun, I'm not as brave as you, but just have a good time. Don't worry about other people (: x |
Hey, this has been a thing for me too, I love to swim and had let my si stop me for a while, but I'm so glad I started again.
Originally I would wear a long sleeved rash shirt to cover my arms, although recently I haven't been bothering. What the others have said is right- no one is going to be paticularly looking at your arms- and with the rippling water lines on your body aren't really noticeable unless you know they're there or are really looking. If you're really self conscious about it you could just wear a rashie, otherwise I highly doubt that anyone will notice :). Hope it goes well for you, have fun!!!! xxx |
i love swimming, i would say go for it. have lots of scars on my arm and a cluster on my thigh so i was really worried when i started going swimming again properly.
like mrs sam said, take a towel as far in as you can. once ur in the water noone can really see esp not if you swimming lengths. once u've been once it gets easier cos u realise that all u've been worrying about is for nothing. the swimming pool near me only has communal showers which is where its more of a problem-but u dont have to shower at the swimming pool-depends on the fasilities hope that helps, dont let sh put u off xx |
