Can someone explain "Moral Sense Theory" to me, please?
It's just I had a dream last night where I had an exam where I had to write an essay on 'Moral Sense'.
I Googled it, and found that it's actually a theory in ethics! But the lingo boggles my brain right now, so if someone could explain it to me in clear, simple terms that would be wondrous. :) |
Ok, I googled it too!
My understanding is that it is a sort of innate sense of "wrongness". That we understand without being taught, it just feels wrong. For example: we know that it is wrong to kill people from a young age, without explictly being told "you must not kill people". And if murder was legalised we would probably still feel that it was wrong. It is tied in with emotional approval or disapproval of other peoples actions, which are based on our own individual moral code. I am not quite sure but i think "moral sense" is essentially our conscience. confusing but most thorough explanation I found is here: http://science.jrank.org/pages/7887/Moral-Sense.html for when your brain is less boggled :-) |
Will read when brain is less boggled, for sure. :) Thanks!
I think I've just about got a handle on it in relation to me and my dream.... but am still keen to learn more. Thank you. :) |
There are universal taboos. In almost every cultural no matter how far removed from each other there are things that are universally wrong. Murder is wrong in most culturals, so is stealing, also so is insest (yes there are exceptions, but in most cases). This is what the idea of "they just feel wrong"
|
Thanks.
