Counselling-who's right?

background: apparentrly because i'm involved with secondary services (CPN,Pyshch,OT) i can't have counselling provided by primary services (GP).

When i last saw my psyschitrist she agreed that i would benefit from counselling, so she said whe's write to my GP recomending that i be given it (i have a copy of that letter).

However i had an appointment with my CPN and Occupational therpaist and both of them said i wouldn't get counselling until after they had discharged me*

So who is right? Do i ask my GP for counselling or is it pointless as my CPN and OT won't allow it?

*also my psych said she was referring me to day services. My OT thinks this is a bad move as they would "give me more support" that she would and she bascially thinks i should pull myself together. any thoughts on this?

i think you should go ahead with asking for the referal. al they can say is no

I dont really know. I've opted for private counselling without informing my CMHT, none of their business. I pay £5 per session which is amazing considering some counselling agencies charge £35.

I can't have a CPN as I have a psychologist, so I guess it could be right.

That's what I was told too.

The counselling services offered by GP surgeries though are usually given to people before they are refered on to a psychologist aren't they? Sort of as first resort type thing so that not everyone is referred on... or that's what I thought it was anyway

Any way of getting counselling elsewhere? Like through school/college/uni/work or something like that, maybe private. But I still think you should try.

My friend is a counsellor in a gp's surgery and it is quite low intensity stuff and generally she works with people with minor anxiety and depression. So if you have a CPN etc. you may not qualify, however, definately talk to your gp about it because every surgery is different.

I think i'll make an appointment with my GP, my psych did try and look up private counselling but the only one that came u was for women suffering from abuse, which i don't fit under. Wish i was still at uni as they had counselling but don't think i can access it as a graduate. But will have another look into private. Does anyone know if/have expreince of MIND or Rethink offer counselling services?
