Scarred- Anti Depressents

I just need a hug or something.

Went to the GP today for a review of my Citalopram 20mg. Lady tried to tell me it was okay and I could have the tablets for another year but they would need reviewing every year and I would have to come off them eventually.

Yes I know I have to come of them eventually but at the moment I'm not ready. I lost my job in August. Money is tight. I'm stressed. I'm trying to do my 2nd year of uni. The time just isn't right.

I felt pressured into coming of them.

I told her I have been suicidal and I have.

Yes I am scarred to let go of my 'crutch' when the time is right and I'll have to deal with it but the time isn't right now.

Before I was taking Fluoxetine and I chose to come of them and then when things went wrong I really struggled to get CAMHS to let me have them back. I ended up leaving CAMHS and ended up having to go to the GP to get some (was a different doctor)

I was put on Citalopram for anxiety. I've stayed on them after the anxiety went because I felt too low to come of them.

The Doc today said I didn't have Depression/Anxiety, well, fair enough but I certainly don't feel ready to come off the tablets.

I'm having Group Psychotherapy. What does this Doctor think that's for then!? Because I have nothing better to do from 30clock on Fridays? I don't think so.

Can I have a hug please.... I'm up to my eyeballs in Uni work and the house needs cleaning for my boyfriend who is working all hours he can so we can survive.

Hmm, Drs can sometimes come across as very simplistic in their view of how the mind works (they do not always get the grey areas). However, the Dr did say you could stay on them. Yes, legally they have to review the prescription every so often, but she/he did not say 'come of them now'.

However, if in doubt, ask to speak to a different Dr, it may be that they will have a better viewpoint and/or be able to put it across better for you.

*hugs*

i agree, they didnt say that right now you have to come off them, they said they would need to review them every so often. At the end of the day its your choice and no one can force you to come off them.

Wonderful. 30-10-2009 02:57 PM

Citalopram have withdrawal symptoms and things... so the longer you are on them, I'm guessing it's going to be harder to come off them?

But you are right. You don't have to come off them if you don't feel ready, particulary not when you are feeling stressed etc.

Try not to worry about it. *Cuddles*
Take good care of yourself.

I think perhaps what your doctor meant is that you have psychological issues, that cause you to feel depressed and anxious as opposed to organic mental illness perhaps. Often when people's problems are psychological tablets might provide a boost for the person to work on their problems, rather than being the solution to them.

Try not to feel upset/worried about it. Your doctor would be doing you a great disservice if she wasn't considering you coming off medication at some point in the future, it's her job to question wether medication is appropriate for you, not just to hand out pills without examining their positives and negatives and your feelings about them. A year is a very long review period anyway, I have medication reviews every 4 weeks!

I hope things pick up for you soon and that you don't worry about how this appointment went, because really there isn't anything to be afraid about.

Nothing else to add; it's all been said. Except, how about telling your doc how this information made you feel?
That you don't feel ready to come off them?
Do you have any other sort of therapy in place, other than the one night a week?
Maybe you could let him know you might want more support when the day comes to be off?
It is a year away, so you may not even need extra support when the time comes, but perhaps it would ease how you feel now to know that something could be there for you, IF you should need it?

I think you need a second opinion.
