Job of a CPN
Does anyone know what a CPN is supposed to do? Like whats in the job description and with what things can they help people with/how far can they go? Basically what their job entails?
I should ask my CPN this but I'd feel rather stupid having been seeing her for atleast a month and not knowing the answer. but i'm thinking if I knew 'how' they could help. I'd know how they could help me more. |
Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPNs) assess needs as well as plan and evaluate programmes of care. They provide psychological treatments and support. CPNs also see how medication is working.

To be really cheeky:
If you're going to see a psychiatric-related person on a regular basis, chances are that it's going to be a CPN that you see. They do the "talking therapy" stuff, can discuss any medication side-effects, if you have concerns with your care - or if they have concerns with you, your care, or how you're coping, you can work together to come to a conclusion. The psychiatrist is effectivly the site-leader, whereas the CPNs tend to be the builders, if you can understand that slightly random metaphor? Hope this helps, Leigh, and do try talking to your CPN if you have anymore concerns. TAke care, xoxo |
My former Psychiatrist used to have a CPN in his office and they would both see patients at the same time. If someone came in and was in bad shape the Pdoc would be called in and he would check on her recommendations. She could change and write meds scripts. I guess a lot depends on where you live too. Here in Pennsylvania, CRN's are a step between a Rn and a DR. with prescription writing priviledges except for certain controlled substances they require a MD signature. I hope this helps some.
