ok so after reading the are you a grammar nazi thread its obvious some people dont see dyslexia as being an excuse for having bad grammar and spelling, but it is.

and i know general chat is for fun and normal chat but i thought it would be good to have a dyslexia thread because it is hard to deal with and especially when alot of people dont see it as a learing disability because its "only" dyslexia.

Dyslexia symptoms vary according to the severity of the disorder as well as the age of the individual.
Pre-school age children It is difficult to obtain a certain diagnosis of dyslexia before a child begins school, but many dyslexic individuals have a history of difficulties that began well before kindergarten. Children who exhibit these symptoms have a higher risk of being diagnosed as dyslexic than other children. Some of these symptoms are:

• Delay in learning to speak
• Learns new words slowly
• Has difficulty rhyming words, as in nursery rhymes
• Late in establishing a dominant hand

Early elementary school-age children

• Difficulty learning the alphabet
• Difficulty with associating sounds with the letters that represent them (sound-symbol correspondence)
• Difficulty identifying or generating rhyming words, or counting syllables in words (phonological awareness)
• Difficulty segmenting words into individual sounds, or blending sounds to make words (phonemic awareness)
• Difficulty with word retrieval or naming problems
• Difficulty learning to decode words
• Confusion with before/after, right/left, over/under, and so on
• Difficulty distinguishing between similar sounds in words; mixing up sounds in multisyllable words (auditory discrimination) (for example, "aminal" for animal, "bisghetti" for spaghetti)

Older elementary school children

• Slow or inaccurate reading
• Very poor spelling
• Difficulty associating individual words with their correct meanings
• Difficulty with time keeping and concept of time
• Difficulty with organization skills
• Due to fear of speaking incorrectly, some children become withdrawn and shy or become bullies out of their inability to understand the social cues in their environment
• Difficulty comprehending rapid instructions, following more than one command at a time or remembering the sequence of things
• Reversals of letters (b for d) and a reversal of words (saw for was) are typical among children who have dyslexia. Reversals are also common for children age 6 and younger who don't have dyslexia. But with dyslexia, the reversals persist.
• Children with dyslexia may fail to see (and occasionally to hear) similarities and differences in letters and words, may not recognize the spacing that organizes letters into separate words, and may be unable to sound out the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word.

ok i'll start

hi im spongebob i have dyslexia, i was diagnosed with it when i was 16/17 at college. the schools i went to refused to believe that i was. they knew i was dyslexic but kept saying it was borderline, once going to college it was found out that i am serverly dyslexic.

all school have to pay extra for pupils if they have learning difficulties and dont get any funding back from the government so they try and lie about who has them so if its "less servere" difficulties then they say they dont have them. i had no extra help until i turned 15 when we had a sub for 6 months due to my teacher having cancer she stayed behind with me every day after school to help. she knew it was important to me because i was in top set i managed to get a high C for my english GCSE.

I got diagnosed at college, so I was 17 i think.
At school I had just been ut in the "special needs" classes and basically forgotten about, but at college I had a brilliant lecturer who organisd for me to be assessed :)
I ended up getting extra time in exams and I have a green overlay which helps me read, before this we're thought that I had bad eyesight!

I'm now at University, where to be honest I don't get that much help... but I do see the disabilities adviser very regularly, to the point where she now emails me every few weeks to see how things are going

My best friend, who I've known since Primary, only got diagnosed once she was at college as well. I think this is a good thread.

Dyslexia IS a 'excuse' for bad grammer or spelling.
It's NOT an 'exucse' for excessive use of txt speak like some people that go into chat seem to think.
But i wouldn't call it an excuse for either, excuse just doesnt sound like the right word.

Some dyslexic mistakes can look like text speak, and some people use text speak because it's easier than struggling with longer/complicated words, actually. Some people with dyslexia find it harder to understand, though. In my experience (I have spent a lot of time in the Learning Support bit of college for my own reasons), many dyslexics like text speak because it makes communication easier.

Except, it doesnt make it easier when most people(that i know) cant understand text speak easily at all.
I understand that some dyslexia mistakes may look like text speak and thats fine. But when its full-blown text speak that would probably take longer to
learn' or think of than normal words, then people try and excuse it with "I'm dyslexic leave me alone" thats what i mean by what i said in my previous post.

I just don't think you can really comment on how easy it is to read text speak as a dyslexic unless you are one, or have spent a lot of time talking to people who are. It's not really the non-dyslexics' place to decide what's best for them to understand, is it? Besides, it doesn't cause you actual harm if they type in a way you find annoying.

A lot of allowances are made for people with mental health conditions on this site, and I think learning difficulties need to be given equal consideration. It's about time. I always found the hypocrisy of people saying "normal people are so ignorant" when they'd go on to complain about a badly written post so ridiculous.

I have dyslexia but i go out of my way to try and hide it, as the stigma and the trouble you can get from people makes it easier to try and hide it.

I try to hide it IRL, but it's quite hard for me to do in the online world due to everything being typed. And I also try to be more 'myself' here, and part of me is the dyslexia.

I have dyslexia and some dyspraxia trates. I can't rememeber when i was diagnosed and i haven't really had any help over my school years nore college.

I had no support in english throughout my lower years at senior school. I was just seen as lazy and would just sit there completly clueless until the teaching assistant would finally do my work. I was always asked to read my work out and felt really embarrsed because i couldnt phsyically read it. GCSE years, i was finding easy words hard to spell which drove me crazy. I was in bottom set in english. I had to re-do all of my english coursework because it was rubbish. My brain just couldn't handle all the work. My teacher refused to let me do foundation leval at GCSE english so i was dumped with higher leval. I got a D in english overall. College, I got no help. They saw i was struggerling with spelling in assignments and time keeping but no help at all. One assignment was due november 08 and i didnt give it in until June 09.

But yeah, i'm dyslexic. I do try to hide it in real life but sometimes it's hard.

I'm dyslexic as well, though I try my hardest to make sure I spell things right. :ermm:

I find being on a computer a lot easier than writing on paper, thats why my GCSE's were online. :)

i wish my gcse's were online, 1 because i couldnt/cant spell and my punctuation is awful and also because my hand writting is pretty terrible althoughi cant say thats because of dyslexia thats just because its awful and no one took the time to help.

its really strange when im texting i dont you text talk but if im having a msn comvosation i do, which is strange i think because text talk is meant for texting.

i think what gets me the most about people saying things about dyslexic is at the school i went to there was a running joke "you can tell whos dyslexic because they cant spell it" that always got me, so i made it a personal mission to learn how to spell it.

i always find it strange how i can understand text talk better than i can use it lol

one of my college teachers told me that dyslexia is a learning difficulty that is super hard to deal with because its not always picked up. i know it was just her oppinion but i think its quite true because if you have other learning difficulties they are always easily picked up because they are quite easy to pick up on whereas alot of dyslexics are just classed as being lazy.

i didn't even realize dyslexia was what was causing my problems untill i got to uni !
i always get really embarrased when people correct my spelling and grammar, it makes me feel stupid and i know that i am not... i guess thats why it drives me nuts.

i love this thread. my little sister, who is kinda my best friend is dyslexic. she is also one of the most mature, intelligent, and talented people i know.
i have learnt so much about it all in the past few years, and i have a lot of respect for people who struggle with it. you are all beautiful and don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise (Y)

I'm dyslexic, and rely on my spellcheckers which work on websites i use.
Unfortunatly i spent more time worrying about what i am spelling that whether or not my grammar is exact.

Hi I'm Connie and have dyslexia.
I was diagnosed at the age of about 7/8 because I could barley read or write. I can remember doing and exam and the only words I remember being able to read 'and' and 'the.'
I don't like using dyslexia for an excuse for anything. It just means I just need to do things in a different way.
I really don't like text speak though. Confuses the hell out of me.
And the only reason my spelling is so good in this post is because my laptop has spell check on it!
But yeah... My dyslexia is part of me. I don't mind telling people about it. But it's not something I would bring up in conversation unless it was important. =)

At college I always used to be told "dyslexia is just posh for stupid" :( I always hated that... I think that is why I now have a bit of a "thing" about looking stupid, I'd rather sit and say nothing than say something wrong...

ok so alot of people feel ashamed of dyslexia or makes them feel as though they arent clever so this is to prove you can do amazing things with it :)
