There's a lot of stuff we can't talk about in general chat because the age of a lot of members makes such talk inappropriate.
So why not create a section where such chat is allowed? An over 16, or over 18, section of the site? A place where dirty chat and s-e-x talk is allowed no matter how graphic the content.

Or is that what the Veteran's corner is for and I just need to get out of General Chat from time to time?

Yes but people lie all the time to get through that barrier.

Also not everyone puts the year that they were born on their profile...
Unless it was made compulsory, but then would guests be able to access it because they don't have to enter their date of birth?

Maybe a good idea, I'm just thinking that there may be a few ways around it which would need sorting out.

Anyway, I dont think we need to create a new section, enough of it goes on anyway and its not always based on age, its also about people who are triggered by certain things and seeing as GC is supposed to be non triggering, I dont see how we could mod it.

RYL is a self harm site at the end of the day. Why do we need a place to discuss sex?

talk about sexual problems and asking for support regarding sexual stuff is allowed.

Im baffled as to why, out of the whole of the internet, you would choose to come to a self harm support site to have cyber sex/talk graphically about ****ing?!?

especially with the intimacy issues a lot of members have, and with the age of a lot of members.

If you and a particular member feel the need to talk about such things, take to msn or somewhere.

It's not just sex chat, that's just what was sitting on the surface of my brain. I'm sure we've all seen subjects started on the forum that were later taken down because they were inappropriate considering most members in General Chat are under a certain age.
but if there was a section where you have to be over 18 then that kind of chat could be allowed because it doesn't risk being inflicted on a young and impressionable person.

But the thing is, people do! So maybe there ought to be a chat room for that sort of stuff. In any chat room other than the most serious one, all that seems to go on is talking about sex. It creeps me out a little. xx

I just wondered if it would be a good idea to start a section where we can have some more 'mature' (and I use the term loosely) chat without running the risk of having a 14 year old member seeing it.

RYL is never going to please everybody. At the end of the day, it's a site set up to deal with self-harm; there are a number of other forums that you can go to if you'd like to discuss something more 'adult' (and not simply sex-related) (and I don't mean to imply that we don't want you here!)

I also worry - and this is a side point, so sorry about that :P - that the more that RYL starts to cater for absolutely everybody on every topic, the more reliant people are going to get on it - and the harder it'll be to break away from RYL - which is bad, because people do need to aim to leave RYL at some point.

I had another point? Erm. Vets! Vets can be used for discussion relating to subjects that are slightly maturer, so long as they still stick in line with the rules. And, I don't think that age restriction is the only reason that some of these threads get removed - the rules are there not only because of the age differences, but also for the wellbeing of the majority.

I don't want to leave. I have lots of friends here and I enjoy all the funny topics we talk about.

There is an adult label, there is the vets corner, and there are specific boards for every possible thing this website attempts to cater for.

There are also thousands of forums on the internet to talk about other stuff.

:) I'm not saying you have to leave now. But I don't think it's particularly healthy to stay on a site like this forever. I remember Harley saying that this site should be used as a crutch for when people really need it, and not as a permanent thing.

But yeah, no, I like it here too.

I do wonder if RYL is slowly drifting away from SH with threads like this :\
