the dreaded side effects of anti psychotics *updated*

I know there has been a few posts on this in the past so hope you guys dont mind me posting this...

at the moment I am on seroquel and I have been since november last year... I am also on an AD... my dose has changed a lot since I first went on it and my latest increase was a month ago... am now on 75mg of seroquel a day (and yes I know... this is nothing compared to how much some people take..) in the last few weeks I have noticed some side effects from the increase, side effects that I have had in the past but not to this extent. I am finding that now I am almost always shaking or trembling and it is interfering with things like my sleep, when I work... and also with my knees hurting even more (have had problems with my knees for many years.. but now that I am always shaking, I have noticed they get even more sore)

I really dont wana go on another AP if I can help it because I find that seroquel works really well for me and I dont want to lose that safety net I guess by trying something else that may not work as well.... I know there are some drugs out there that can help treat side effects from meds... but I dont know much about them at all.. I was wondering if you guys know any of them, and how they work and stuff...

I see my gp tomorrow morning and am hoping to bring this issue up with her but before I do this I want to know a bit of back ground stuff myself so that I can be more in control of what happens as opposed to being told!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys :-)

hey Loz, sorry I dont have any advice but I am also on Seroquel been on it for years and I find that I get the shakes a lot as well, just wanted you to know you're not alone xx

lozza 06-07-2009 09:03 AM

thanks sweetie

qst.... for you... is it so bad that it causes pain or that??
I just dont know if I have it really bad or just normal and hence if I should maybe think about going on something to help with the side effects or not...

Revival 06-07-2009 09:07 AM

no I dont get pain from it, I would go and get that checked out doesnt sound normal *cuddles*

Maybe there is a medication that you can take to help with the side effects or there could be an antipsychotic that works in a similar way with less side effects. It would be a good idea to talk to the person who prescribed your medication. Take care.

Procyclidine helps shakes off antipsychotics x

Bear 06-07-2009 12:37 PM

I was going to suggest procylidine too, it does help :)

Droplet 06-07-2009 02:15 PM

I take procyclodine twice a day and I know it helps with side effects of AP's on eyes (forgotten what that is called). I was on seroquel but it didn't quite work for me. What I am on now (Abilify/Aripiprizole, don't know why I'm telling you that but oh well) seems to be doing a good job so I understand that fear of getting ill again.

I hope it goes well with your GP. :)

lozza 06-07-2009 11:22 PM

thanks guys... have written the name down and will bring it up with my gp when I see her (apt is 50 mins away now... *runs and hides*) I really dont want to change anti psychotics if I can help it because I know the seroquel works well for me and well I dont gain weight on it and I know that is a side effect for many AP's and yeh....

will let you guys know how apt goes when get back

I'm so stupid and pathetic I HATE me!!!!!

she just said to decrease my dose of seroquel.... ummm small problem with that... if I decrease the dose and not take it in the morning it will be even harder for me to take afternoon and night doses...

I have no idea what to do now...

I can't keep going this way but I cant afford to decrease my dose right now either... I'm screwed *cries*

I just dont know what to do anymore

Geranium 07-07-2009 02:33 PM

Poor you - sorry you're having such a hard time with this.

I've been following your thread because Quetiapine (seroquel) has been suggested for me as well... and I don't really want to go on it because of side effects - especially as I am well more of the time than not now.

Your doctors recommendation doesn't sound so bad though - you've said it helps and you've said you don't get side effects from the lower dose. Why is it you can't take the other doses if you're not taking the morning one?

Sneckie 07-07-2009 06:22 PM

Im on quetiapine too and i get the shakes sometimes. However i take my largest dose in the evening so its not too bad
