Yesterday, I found out that...

I could possibly have bipolar. I'm not taking it too well. I've been diagnosed with a mood disorder already. My mom has bipolar so she understands me, but she's not my age. I told my best friend and she just really doesn't know what to say. I don't see the point of this thread. I just wish someone would understand me. Sorry...that's all...xx

i had been diagnosed with bipolar at one point so i know how scary it can be.

But..

It now means the drs know what treatments are going to be most effective with you.

Its only a label for drs purpose ie paperwork, and doesnt reflect your a different person.

Take care x

Many people with Bi-Polar are able to lead a happy life and control their symptoms with meds. Having a diagnosis of Bi-Polar doesn't equate with having a difficult life. Anything is possible.

I know that it must be hard to be told something like this, though. *hugs*

Like Girl Afraid said, it's more to help the doctors really. So other professionals have an over view of what you might be struggling with, and so that people can help with your symptoms more effectively.

I've always been told that symptoms are more important to focus on rather than the illness because those are what are causing you problems.

Think of it as a step towards making things better - if you know what's going on, then you can more accurately / easily get things going in a better direction. I mean, if you can pinpoint what's wrong then it's a lot easer working with it. Remember, this doesn't change you - you're the same person you always were, just with a label to put on it.

Thanks. (: It's nice to know that people understand me. My best friend doesn't believe me...she just thinks it's hormones. >.> She's making me really mad.

Hun I know it's hard but you have to look at it this way it's only a label and as others have said it is only there so they are able to treat you better. Nothing has changed from yesterday all that has changed is you have a diagnosis (label). You can move forward from this, this diagnosis does not define who you are as a person. As for your friend, maybe she's saying that because she doesn't know how to react to your diagnosis, talk to her and tell her how upset her words make you feel. Take care

Bipolar is part of my diagnosis too so if you ever want to chat about anything, feel free to PM me. I know it's hard, but try not to stress too much over the fact that you may be diagnosed with this, if it is the case that you have it, then remember that, you had it before it was found out also - it just means that now it's been recognized you can get help with dealing with it and reducing the symptoms.
I understand that it's frustrating, it gets to me too, when people belittle and doubt your illness through lack of knowledge because they have no real idea how it makes you feel but if they are willing to have an open mind and listen then perhaps you could explain how things really are, in time, so that they understand.

*hugs* As other people said, you are still the same person as you were before the diagnosis, and this won't change that. It just helps the doctors help you and give you the right sort of treatment. It can also help you pinpoint your areas that you struggle with, you can work to improve them.

Thanks. (: It just really upsets me that people judge. My friend's mom won't let her come to my house, because my mom has bipolar. It's really stupid and upsetting. :/

Awhh hun, I'm sorry to hear that. But on the positive side now the doctors can treat you better because they know what's wrong with you. I'm always on msn, if you wanna talk. xo.
