I loved Chaucer's Canterbury Tales when I was at school. We did it for Higher English, I think.

I just read Fast Train Approaching by Steve Walter
It's all about mental illness, and what it was like for him during his breakdowns - Very interesting read

Athiri 13-10-2009 03:08 PM

Very nearly finished Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, just a couple of pages left to go. I still can't believe I've only just got round to reading it, it's been sitting on my shelf for years. Shameful. After that I'm gonna start the Grapes of Wrath methinks.

Yeah, I thought it was quite good. It's worth reading anyway, although it isn't centred around her self harming despite the title.

J.K 14-10-2009 08:59 PM

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - L. Frank Baum.
More uni children's literature stuff.

MrsCoulter 14-10-2009 09:36 PM

I just finished reading The Secret Diary of Dimented Housewife, by Niamh Greene. It's okay -not that great but not bad either. I was engrossed enough to keep reading but found the main character rather monotomous - she kept overreacting to every situation, and kept using the line 'I think I shall write to ----- to commend/complain about such and such' and it got a little old quickly. But it was an average read - good if you use it as a time waster etc.

one_step_closer 15-10-2009 11:07 AM

Stacy and the Mystery of Stoneybrook (The Babysitters Club) - Ann Martin.

I find IT really slow, i've never managed to get all of the way through.

I think At the Mountains of Madness is on my 'to read' list, is it any good so far?

Serenade 25-10-2009 12:43 PM

I agree with you for sure on it seeming slow at first, but once it picks up, it's really fantastic. I think a lot of the historical padding out of Derry is what makes the content difficult to get through, but once you finish, it makes a lot of sense and you appreciate the time it took for everything to be set in motion and such if that makes any sense.

The Lovecraft novel is interesting so far, though i'm only a couple of chapters in :D

one_step_closer 25-10-2009 02:11 PM

Matilda - Roald Dahl. My favourite book from childhood.

consequential 26-10-2009 03:00 AM

i seen IT as a tv series was brilliant !!

The War Doctor 26-10-2009 06:47 PM

IT is a fantastic book. Takes a while to get going, but it's well worth it.

Just read: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Currently reading: Michael Collins by Tim Pat Coogan.
Next: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

Breifly_Tragic </3 26-10-2009 08:55 PM

I'm reading Invisible Monsters (Chuck Palahniuk) for like, the seventy-eighth time. It's about a girl. Birds ate her face. Yes, I enjoy being cryptic. It's a good read though.

Wakeful Dreamer. 30-10-2009 10:52 AM

^ Oooo Carrie, enjoy! I've been reading Virginia Andrews non stop since August! I'm now on "April Shadows".

ThinkingofRecovery 30-10-2009 09:39 PM

Thanks. I am about 100 pages from the end of Tess of the D'Urbervilles which I will finish tomorrow and which I hope will have a happier ending as it has been quite sorrowful then I will start it.

I joined the library a few weeks ago, I used to always be a member until I moved here a few years ago. I had forgotten how nice the experience of browsing etc were - picked up a couple of history books aswell whilst I was there.

Stellata 30-10-2009 09:41 PM

Libraries are awesome! [But then I'm kind of biased!]

The War Doctor 30-10-2009 10:43 PM

I've finally gotten started on Anna Karenina. I've had it for about a year...

Next up: Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. My English teacher recommended the Gormenghast trilogy, reckons I'd like it.

I a new russian dwarf hamster today and one of the 1st names I thought of was Anna due to Anna Karenina. I haven't managed to read it all through, that should go on my list also.

There was a big trend with the Gormenghast trilogy a few years back but I never tried.

I really need to make a list as I am reading quite a bit right now being off work and people keep mentioning books that I have wanted to read at various points.
