I'm reading "Poppy Shakespeare" by Clare Allan - It's very dark comedy fiction based on her experiences in a mental health day centre. I guess some people might find it offensive, but me.... I haven't had such a good laugh at myself (and my experiences in day centres) in such a long time. Very risky use of language, which I love - It's described as "One flew over the cuckoo's nest meets catch 22" - but I find it superior to both. It's very satirical and raises lots of questions about "mental illness"
I also loved the televised version of this book, which was shown as a drama on channel 4 - the book however is far superior. Maria |

I'm reading, The SERIAL KILLER Files by Harold Schechter
Not one of the easiest reads ever. At times I feel like I want to throw up and forget what I just read. And I don't even know why I continue to read. |
I'm reading A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut.
Not enjoying Clockwork Orange. It seems like a series of shock-events trying to grab the reader's attention. And I get the feeling that the end is just going to give some generic moral lesson. Not cool. Slaughterhouse 5 is much better. I need to reread parts of it because I put it down for two months (got really busy) but I'm enjoying it. I dig Vonnegut's style. |
