About to start (again) Room 13 by Robert Swindells, one of my favourite childhood books.

The War Doctor 22-11-2013 04:15 PM

Last night/this morning I finished Iron Kingdom: The Rise and Downfall of Prussia, 1600-1947. The first few chapters were a bit dry and boring at times, but overall it was a very interesting book. I never knew just how batshit crazy Otto von Bismarck was, or that Kaiser Wilhelm II was pretty much the Kanye West of the late 19th/early 20th century.

Anyway, now I'm reading The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler.

I've just finished 'Oh dear Silvia' by Dawn French and would highly recommend it. It's funny, it's dark, it has twists and turns and warms your heart. Such a good read.

Paper Towns - John Green

By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead
By Julie Ann Peters

-A young teenage girl plans to end her life and in the run up to her demise, finds a pro-suicide forum/website which helps to plan her end. The book follows her 23 days before the date she's due to 'finalise' arrives.
-Very heavy on unusual tip-sharing and based very much on a real pro-suicide website. It has some good discussion points at the end, but I'd be wearing of using it in a group due to the tip-sharing/heavy nature of the book.
-The ending is so, so bad and disappointing!

Going Too Far
By Jennifer Echols

-Meg is found trespassing on the railway bridge with her no-good boyfriend and 2 other friends. Their punishment is each each of them will spend spring break with one of the emergency services. Meg gets landed with Officer After and the book follows their week together.
-I found this book impossible to put down! I would highly recommend it. It's full of twists and turns, but also manages to flow brilliantly.

Suicide Notes; A Novel
By Michael Thomas Ford

-The book follows Jeff's 42 day programme in an adolescent mental health unit. It uncovers why he's there, and brings other patients into the plot nicely.
-The book was easy to read and hard to put down. I didn't expect the ending/reason for Jeff being admitted, which came as a nice surprise as normally these things are too predictable. It's very easy to relate to for those that have spent time in hospital/treatment for mental health conditions.
