I haven't seen Doctor Who but the actor played William Hartnell aka the first Doctor in a drama a few years ago about the creation of Doctor Who if that helps clear up the confusion.

Never had this issue with the N64. Clear on/off button and plug any controllers in you like without worrying about syncing them and all that **** and attempting to connect to the internet!

I only have Nintendo consoles but with them you have to press a button on the back of the controller and a button on the console at the same time to sync it. Might be the same for your console Beckie.
