Petition for BBC, C4 and Gordon Brown!
Hey people! =]
So here goes, ...howl and I [along with lots more, im sure] think that self harm is still to much of a taboo topic when it comes to education in schools and the general public. So, with our combined brain power, we managed to come up with the idea of a petition. Were hoping to get as many people to sign this petition as possible, agreeing that self-harm needs more awareness raised. Then, of course when sucessful, to personally hand into Gordon Brown [as new PM]. Hopefully this can be the starting point to get self-harm into P.S.H.E lessons at schools, educate more people and have programs and documentaries like 'The Cutting Club' aired more frequently. Were hoping this might help to get the message about self harm across to those unaware and educate the public. So, PLEASE! if you agree with this, sign below. Thankyou. x 1. Cait [xxendlessxx] 2. hmmm ... while I agree that this is a admirable project to be involved in, I think asking that people supply their full names on an internet site is a little risky.
Seeing as people cant really 'sign'anyway on an internet site, how about people just give their first names and their username .... or maybe just a username ....? That would be okay for a petition, wouldnt it? I'm going to delete members' last names from the existing posts ... and if in future posts, could members please refrain from posting their last (family) names? Thanks. Good luck with your project guys! |
ah why not

oooh I forgot to sign!
typsee The people who design and conduct these sorts of educational programs in schools, would need to be very careful in making sure the info was presented in such a way that doesnt 'normalise' self harm for kids ... or even worse - to 'glamorise' it, which is what you often get when self harm is respresented in movies. You'd also need to get a nice balance between providing an accepting environment that encourages the kids to talk about their experiences of self harm, but also doing it in such a way that you dont give the message that self injury is an acceptable way to cope with your problems. But you dont want to go so far as to make it all doomy and gloomy, and shame people for having these sorts of problems .... nor do you want to go the other way, and make it seem like an attractive option to kids who are new to self harm. Very tricky indeed to get the right sort of balance .... but then again, I've seen some good drug educational programs taught in schools ... I guess a self harm awareness program could be well designed if someone put their energies into doing so. woops - sorry about rambling away on your petition! I have major problems with being 'concise' when I'm writing. ;) |

If you want this petition to become more available to non-ryl members...
http://www.petitiononline.com/petition.html is a free online petition making site that may work. If you want to recieve a greater amount of 'signatures' I suggest you use it. Good luck! 'cutting' was covered minimally in my health classes, self-harm was not. I'm in the USA though. |

45 so far
And i have permisson from a couple of Non RYL friends to add them so, without firther ado Georgie Conor |
i agree with what you are trying to achieve but will not sign the pertition.
my reason for this is a simple one if you take into consideration the stats on self harm and abuse etc even mental health in general, in a class of 30 pupils u will have 1 person who has been abused, 1 who is a abuser, 1 or 2 that self harm and then about 3 others with mental health issues. while i agree that awareness needs to be raise any for of edication added to the curriculum would only prove ot be triggering to these individuals and would signal them out through their reactions in class |
