Trials and Tribulations of a (hopefully) soon to be uni student

Hi everyone, basically I need some motivation to study for my exams and also some advice.

I don't like change and am realkly freaking out about uni so was wondering what other people's experiences are. Like whether your at uni now, how you're coping with it, whether you regret it, if it's fun etc etc.

Any replies would be great

Hi,
Sorry i don't have anything useful to say but i just wanted to say that i'm having the same problem with going to uni next year so hopefully other people's replies migt=ht help me to.

Pomegranate 13-06-2007 09:28 PM

thanks, at least I know it's not just me :)

Many people say its the best years of your life. Well i guess they are right. You will meet people from all over the place. From outside of your normal socio-economic circles. You will meet people there who will remain friends for the rest of your life. You also have a very high chance of meeting your future partner there too. You will discover new ways yo get totally wasted for less money than you thought was humanly possible and develop a penchant for the cheapest and wierdest food combinations you can find.

Oh then theres the actualy study but i wouldnt take too much notice of that as it tends to get in the way of all the socialising and stuff!!

thanks penguin- that made me smile :) really hope it's true

Fallen_Half_Angel 13-06-2007 11:05 PM

im at uni and love it! the freedom the nights out the friends, and mainly the fact i dont live with me parents anymore!(to put it nicely we dont get along too well)
hope everything goes good for you x x x

Pomegranate 13-06-2007 11:09 PM

thanks! Can I ask how SI/depression etc has been affected since you went to uni? Like has uni had an impact on it either negatively or positively? I just want to know what to expect sort of thing

Good luck with your exams, just concentrate on the necessary parts of revision.

My time at uni was a crazy rollercoaster, I hit rock bottom, got up, got drunk, danced, got married, read a few good books, danced some more, wrote an essay or too. Got to the end, got a degree!

I think it's impossible to say how uni will affect you, it will depend on loads of different factors, but go into it with a positive mind and that will be a good start.

As for regrets; I have none.

Take care

first of dont worry to much about exams too much stress isentgood for this period and try and take many breaks, im currently a second year uni student, the first year i didnt like so much as i was in student flats, with 11 random people on my floor, yikes, and though they were nice enough people they werent really what i expected and werent into the same things as me, i didnt hit rock bottom but i can remeber crying myself to sleep some nights, however in my class i meet some awesome people, who i party with (though they are 10 years older), but i cant party that much with them as they have family etc, i joined one club where i did meet some people, and for the year to come im trying to make a new club, my second year is where i hit rock bottom, *problems i wont go into* but i couldnt speak to my friends as they i dont think would understand as they see me as a happy normal(if a tad insane guy), but thankfully the tutors are understanding and im going to restart my second year in sep, the night life (well most of the day and night) drinking etc is ace aslong as you find some people who will make sure your safe. oh and on 'work' yeah it needs to be done hehehe, good luck

feel free to pm me luke

Fallen_Half_Angel 14-06-2007 12:25 AM

i self harm less at uni than i do when im at home, mainly because im not around my family, and partly cz although its lonely sometimes, i live in a flat with 7 other people who i get along with and also theres always something going on.

i also recieve help from the on campus uni counsellor and doctor. They are very understanding and see a lot of people with lots of diff problems and if needs be you can recieve extra time on ur assignments cz of mental health problems
pm me if u wanna chat
hope this helps x x

im at northampton :)

SugarKane 14-06-2007 03:47 PM

Warwick's a great uni, my friend went there :) In all likelihood you will have a blast, you will make more friends than you know what to do with, and there is a LOT of support available for if you feel you aren't coping at any time. Because Warwick is a 'campus' uni as well, there's less likelihood of you feeling on the outside of things, as there's always so much going on there. You'll have an amazing time!

invisiblegirl 14-06-2007 03:55 PM

uni will be good (im looking forward to sheffield next year).
motivation to study? well uni will be a good chance to start afrewsh with everything, a new start so to speak, so to get there we've got to revise like crazy til our eyes fall out and our brains go goey from too many facts!
take care and don't get stressed or overwhelmed, just do the best that you can. x hug x
what will you be studying?

Margo 14-06-2007 05:45 PM

I used to play squash at Warwick Uni! One of my friends is a lecturer there too. Or is he a prof?? Hmmm i can never remember

SugarKane 14-06-2007 06:38 PM

My aforementioned friend had the enormous fortune of literally bumping into Germaine Greer on the Warwick Uni campus :D

Queen Crabbit 14-06-2007 09:08 PM

This thread has made me really scared about going. Don't tell anyone, but I'm silently shitting myself too.

At the end of the day though, everyone else is going to be in the same boat.

griddlebone 14-06-2007 09:17 PM

well....i never did any work however i made some really good friends and had some really good times.

my sister is at uni in durham and she loves it. she has loads of friends there and she met her bf there in her first year. she seems to be really happy :)

but....if you dont settle in straight away dont stress about it, it can take some time :) xx

Pomegranate 14-06-2007 11:04 PM

thanks everyone! Most people I have spoken to seem to love it- at least after the first term or so. Chels why has the thread made you more nervous? Penguin what does your friend teach if you dont mind me asking?

Queen Crabbit 14-06-2007 11:09 PM

Cos I don't want to leave my Lulu doggie behind :(
Or be further away from one of my best mates.
Or not be able to see Loz who's like a big cuddly teddy bear and I could just eat him all up and pfft.
Gay.
But booze!

Pomegranate 14-06-2007 11:12 PM

Margo 14-06-2007 11:18 PM

Sheffield is an absolutely MINT place to be a student. I went there for four years, loved it so much I stayed there for 4 more, would still be there now if I could have got a job there.

Brilliant place, absolutely love it.

University is a brilliant time too. I would not have missed it for the world.

Queen Crabbit 16-06-2007 12:19 PM

I'm scaredededed.
