Do your parents know?

Probs a pointless question, but my parents dont know i see a psych
or that im on meds (technically)

or that i SI

or that im "mentally ill"

or anything really.

Ssurely cant be alone. :( Im so jealous when other peoples parentsn are supportive.

Anyone elses whos parents are completely obvlivious?
x

Nici-x 10-01-2008 06:49 PM

I know what you mean, mine dont know a thing either! But they are kinda the problem why im so depressed so thats why they dont know for me!

Im the same, when I hear about other peoples parents supporting them I wana cry, cause I wish I had that.

Im sure your not alone, I can imagine that alot of people dont tell their parents the half of it !

Take care xo

Heidi Tiger 10-01-2008 06:53 PM

My mum was until the night before christmas eve. I told all to her and she was wonderful, I really wasn't expecting her to understand.
On the other hand,my Dad finally twigged about my bulimia after it had been going on for 2 years and he now thinks I'm recovered (I'm not) but he's not supportive at all. He refers to that period as "When Heidi was thin" or "when you were being silly about food" And when I said something about having used to have a problem with food he said " You didn't have a problem with food, you have a problem with throwing it up!" gah.

SO yeah, my point is, it goes both ways. I'd suggest trying to talk to your mum or dad, whats the worst that could happen? You don't have to tell them it all at once either, just a bit at a time, you never know it might improve things at home if they undrstand what your going through.

trina1723 10-01-2008 07:20 PM

you are not alone lol, my mum and dad think im the happiest i have ever been, they just dont realise that when im alone in my room im a mess. i just got better at hiding it from them.
i also get jealous of my friends relationships with their mums cuz i wish mine was like that. it upsets me.
i have no intention of them finding out either it would make my life so much worse lol.
xxxx

Ami 10-01-2008 07:51 PM

ditto. i get upset alot over it.

it would make it worse if they knew. my mam is the most narrow-minded, horrible cow i know to be honest
x

trina1723 10-01-2008 08:01 PM

that suck. i hate the fact then whenever my stupid brother suggests that im an emo and cut myself my mum and dad have big conversations about how stupid and pathetic it is. i dont admit to it and if they ever find out i swear they will disown me and throw me out.
its like stoping me find help aswell cuz im under 16 it will all get back to them
xxxxxx

Infected Mushroom 10-01-2008 08:09 PM

you're not alone at all...
my parents don't know anything at all.
to them everything is all smiles and rainbows.
take care

daisy-star 10-01-2008 08:12 PM

My mum knows, but i couldnt exactly call her supportive. She just says, let me see, grabs my arm and calls me stupid. She called the school and informed them of my SH and depression. Cow

When i Od'ed in March 07 i came home from the hospital and just wanted to be alone. My dad called me a stupid bitch and still treats me like a child. He had to come see my therapist with me once because she wanted to meet my parents and he claimed that i was faking it all and was acting up for attention because everyone was focusing on my sister because she lost her baby.

I care about my Brother and Sister very much and i love them to bits but i havent told them anything. I dont tell my family anything about my personal stuff anymore. I just can't trust them.

Lindsey 10-01-2008 08:34 PM

No.

Once my mum saw a cut on my arm and grabbed my arm and was like "whats that" but I made an excuse and I think she bought it.

Sometimes if I'm a bit low or moody she shouts at me that I need professional help. It's just an expression though, I think she'd die if I actually did seek help. When I stayed back after class to speak to a lecturer at uni, she went mental that I was discussing our private family business (it wasn't, it was my own stuff) with strangers.

I can't talk to my mum, and I don't see my dad at all. But I moved out so they're not as much of a problem anymore.

ConcreteAngel 10-01-2008 08:38 PM

yeah i told them once they asked me to stop i said ok and that was all.

hahahaha
like, as if

Circle Of Fire 10-01-2008 08:41 PM

my parents know everythign because i live with them but they arent the most supportive. Im glad to go through things on my own now:)

lower than myself 10-01-2008 09:09 PM

My parents couldn't care less.

They helped me with my counsellor first time now they want fxck all to do with me, which tbh suits me justs fine.

They were wxnkers anyway.

Quark 10-01-2008 09:10 PM

My mum knew about si when I was 16 but thinks I stopped at 17, doesen't know about anything else. Anything I tell her is usually known by the whole of south london within minutes.

Race The Dream 10-01-2008 09:20 PM

The school told my mum that I si just before Christmas 2006.
She made me go to therapy, which I only went to one session of before quitting it, and then thought I'd stopped.
I clearly hadn't stopped up until a month ago, and she had no idea the whole time.
Apart from once, she saw a massive cut on my wrist and asked me what it was, and I said the dog I had been walking did it... I think she said she believed me just so she wouldn't have to go through all the stress again tbh.
We never talk about it. I don't want to though, so I guess that's a good thing.

Stellata 10-01-2008 09:27 PM

Because of my age and that I live a way from my parents and see them rarely, things're slightly different for me.
All through my childhood and teens they knew something was wrong, but did nothing.
When I was in my early 30s I knew I needed help, and things have progressed from there.
But I didn't tell my parents until the circumstances kind of opened it up to be safe. They knew I was in therapy before, but until I opened up to them they didn't know I was on anti-depressants and have been diagnosed with long term major depression.
However they don't know about my Complex PTSD diagnosis. Partly because they're part of the cause of it... Neither do they know I've hurt myself periodically. Though they do know my eating is/has been erratic.

</3.Miss.Abigail.</3 10-01-2008 09:33 PM

My 'rents don't know either.
They found out about two years ago.
And it was awful. I told them I'd stopped.
And since then.
They think I'm fine.
So I have to be well careful that I like, hide my arms naturally.
It's always easiest in winter.
I want to go to this councelling thing that my mate gave me the number for.
But I' afraid to ring up.
In case they ring my 'rents up.
Aaah well.

Mirren 10-01-2008 10:52 PM

My parents didn't know until last year. Both took it better than I expected. Especially my dad.

xXFallingStarXx 10-01-2008 11:05 PM

My parents don't know that I'm a cutter. It would kill them. I hope they never find out. It'd be horrible.

Dan 10-01-2008 11:48 PM

I go to therapy, and SI, and alot of other stuff, and my family are totally oblivious.

mitch 11-01-2008 01:04 AM

My parents didnt know until i was admitted to a psych hospital. Now that i have been released they think i am all better which is far from the truth. They dont know that i self harm or about any of my suicide attempts. I moved out of home when i knew that i was sick to prevent them from finding out. All they have is critiscim about me being on meds, like supposedly my reactions are slower when i am playing sport. THey never talk about it and my mum has seen my scars once but she didnt say anything. I told them i am off meds just to get them off my back. They never visited me once when i was in hospital and that was for two and a half years! I get upset too when i see other peoples parents and they are so supportive. When i was an inpatient they had meetings which they called family meetings and one day i lost the plot because they kept calling it that and i was the only one from my family who was going to be present. Its nice to know that i am not alone.

Tin-Tin 11-01-2008 02:01 AM

My mum found out once...
I got grounded. That was when I was in High school though.
Now I do things on my own, and if I need support I got to my wonderful boy.
My rents are an odd sort of folk though...

Mystified 11-01-2008 08:50 AM

My step-dad was pretty oblivious until I finally just came out and told him (I was having a nervous breakdown). But, my father doesn't know anything really.

Breadsticks 11-01-2008 03:12 PM

I can't imagine telling my parents! It'd be awful:( Nahh i don't plan on ever letting them know, and they're totally oblivous, they just think i've turned into a moody nasty wee girl, which i guess i have...

Lol x

Neon. 11-01-2008 07:30 PM

My parents know absolutely nothing at all.
My mum thinks that unless you've gone through MAJOR tragedy there's no reason to do it. So no way I'd tell her.
Dad isn't around.

Ami 11-01-2008 07:41 PM

same ^^

Sian 11-01-2008 08:09 PM

I was brought up by my aunt and uncle, not my parents. For the first 5 years they were oblivious. When I was nearly 16 I had a stupid argument with my aunt and blurted it out. She took away anything sharp I had and said I could talk to her , but aside from shouting at me once when she throught I was going to cut after she'd told me off for something we didn't talk about it again for years. As of the last few years they know I cut sometimes and I'm depressed but they don't know the half of it.I've never been able to talk to them about it and now I don't live with them it's easier to hide, harder to talk, so I guess it will stay that way.

false_xsmiles 11-01-2008 09:33 PM

My parents don't currently know I SI. Mum knew when I were 12 (im 15 now) now I don't think she suspects anything. I wouldn't want them to know, its my way of dealing with things and I do not want them getting involved. I'm not prepared to stop it.
xo

LeftOutsideAlone 12-01-2008 12:01 AM

My dad knows I did it for a while...but he thinks Ive stopped now. He was really supportive about it but I dont think he realised it wasnt something you can just stop overnight....

Dreamer And Believer 12-01-2008 05:46 AM

my parents found out a month ago(against my will). It shocked them, and now they're forcing me to see a counselor. They tried to be supportive at first...the first week or so after they found out...but just didn't get it and couldn't help me. Now I'm afraid they think I just flat-out stopped when they found out...which is a lie. Since then they've only asked if I'd cut again...at the time it had been only 2 days since they found out, and the answer was yes. I lied.
having your parents know doesn't necessarily make it better.
I can't look them in the eyes because I am so ashamed and feel so...unclean & imperfect.
And having them try to help actually made me feel more guilty & made things worse. :/

Danny R 12-01-2008 06:38 AM

I sometimes think my Dad knows, Then sometimes i think he has no idea. I try to avoid my parents as much as possible, especially after a rough night. If my mum knew, she'd flip on me, she still thinks of me as her son from about 10 years ago, all small and helpless , guess it would acctually help if the B**** made an effort to get to know me

cobinrapner 12-01-2008 08:05 AM

i told my mom last year after about 3 years of SI. she was shocked but so supportive. and my parents were kind of my reason that i was depressed too. talk to your psych about it. they'll help you work up the courage if you want to tell them. but it's so worth it. it helped me stop. now i've been SI free for almost a year. you can too!!! good luck hun =)

Lou_Pie 12-01-2008 11:51 AM

My mum read my diary after 2 years of self-harming, so that's how they found out. For the first year it was hell... but then she realised how to cope with me and things got alot easier. I suspect that had she not found out none of the rules she forced me to live with would have been relaxed. Now I'm at uni and she's supporting my recovery.

*Uv_ragdoll*(Shelley) 12-01-2008 06:02 PM

my parents know and theyre really great about it ,very supportive i dont know what id do without them.

-Tough-Cookie- 12-01-2008 06:06 PM

My parents know i have anorexia and OCD

They dont understand either of themor how they impact my life......they dont know im depressed, or self harm or have had SU attemps or such..

hmm
I dont want them to know either

pixie*lyssie 12-01-2008 06:25 PM

It's complicated bcause my mum knows I still self harm and knows I'm stll depressed but my dad doesn't know that I still self harm any more and I dont think he knows I'm still depressed.

bubbblebaby 12-01-2008 08:29 PM

....

my parents found out when i took a o/d and the social worker told her my mum came with her m8s to see me in hospital and thought it would be ok !!! thats when she found out but i havent spoke to her since june so i dont think she knows much

*Beth* 12-01-2008 08:34 PM

I'm 26, but i moved back in with my parents a couple of years ago as my Dad is ill and needs caring. Anyway.... my parents know that i'm in therapy for depression, and that i see a psychiatrist... they even offered to pay for private therapy at The Priory.

BUT

They have never ever mentioned my SI or ED. They have never said, or indicated that they know, but i'm 100% sure they do.

Last year i was taken into hospital for an overdose of laxatives.. my parents told the doctor i had troubles 'going' and made no suggestion there was anything more to it. They have seen my weight drop seriously low and same thing.. as if it's normal, almopst a refusal to acknowledge it in case it makes it worse.

My Mum and Dad have both quite obviously seen cuts on my wrists, but do not react at all. Not a twitch. It's as if they're looking at a cut-free wrist, or that it's completely normal.

They aren't 'oblivious' to my ED/SI.. more 'ignoring' them. I think it's either shame, guilt or just pure denial. Who knows.

reddog 12-01-2008 09:52 PM

yeah Im not sure whether my mum knows or not. Shes never said anything about it, but she found my knife and razor in my room and my brother keeps asking me what the marks on my arm are in front of her. I dont see how she could really be that oblivious. But my family is really expert at ignoreing the unhappy truth of things. When my doctor said I was bulemic last year they were quite happy to ignore that and pretend like there were no problems. Ive thought about telling my mum flat outright, especially because when i go to the doctor again for sports shes gunna find out. I just dont know how. And i hate being a disapointment.

deviantobsession 13-01-2008 12:24 AM

they had no idea i sh, mentally ill, ed, or anything... until about a week ago...a dn they were supportive at one stage but now think im attention seeking... Parents suck! well mine do

phoenix 13-01-2008 12:26 AM

my parents didnt know for years (8 to be percise), then i just decided one day to tell them everything, and its strange cos they have nver really asked me anything since i think it shocked them really. my mam keeps saying that she feels guilty for never noticing but other than that

chingas 13-01-2008 12:32 AM

Mine knows nothing either..
not that I'm on meds, that I've seen CPN and psychiatrist or that I have depression, anxiousness, social phobia.....
they know nothing..
I'm not ready to tell and I know my father isn't ready for information like that..

I'm very jealous for all who have parents that know what's going on and who are supportive.. I'm thankful for havin you guys on RYL and few close friends who I can trust with these things.. It would be too much for me to carry all alone..

[.dimples.]<3 14-01-2008 04:52 AM

my parents have no clue. I was getting help but then i stopped and they didn't even know.

I want to keep it like that.

~Jo~ 14-01-2008 10:42 PM

A jealous "friend" told my mum. She cried soo much, I wanted to keep it from her cause i knew itd break her heart after everything shed done for me. Hoping I wold be uneffectd and that she had taken me away from everything bad so I could lead a normal life
She bought books and things and tried to understand, she was a bit rubbish about it at first cos she couldnt really understand it, and put that down to different generation and it took time for her to come to terms with it.
Once, she found me just after id cut and made an emergency appoinment with the mental health unit. She heard me pour my heart out to them, and then she realised when she was getting the psycs side and my side, how it was talked about normaly lyk an everyday thing, and that it wasnt as scary as she first thought.
she thinks iv stopped now but she surprised me before i left for uni again after xmas, she knows im unhappy in my flat and said "dont let it get to the stage where u take ur own life" in a really concerned way. and that kinda opened my eyes to how much she had learned to accept how things went in my head, and it was kinda nice in a bizarre way that she said that. and was honest about wot she was thinking

I thought shed never understand, but i think on some level she does now. I do think that you yourself would know how ur parents are and how they might take it. Its ur choice really whether they know or not. take care, xxx

alienshe_cheesycake 15-01-2008 01:09 PM

I told my dad when I was very upset
My mums dead but she would have never understood it, she would have probably been really angry as a cover up for the guilt she would as felt.
and to be honest It was because of her that I started.

My dad and I never talk about it, I'm not sure if he is very uncomfortable or he just thinks that I don't want too.

I think both of us would be very uncomfortable talking about it tbh so thats probably why it doesn't happen although sometimes I badly need too. I know he researched it properly and sort of knows "the rules" about how to treat self harmers so I'm grateful he hasn't reacted in a bad angry way, but he's not like that. He's the only decent parent I've got and I love him to bits even if he can't understand properly. blah. rambly.

GhostDude306 15-01-2008 01:14 PM

mine know, my mum always knew i never felt the need to hide it from her but if shes not guilting me for it shes ignoring it completly, she told my dad and he just says every time you cut its like your cutting my heart and all that:( i wish they didn't know

oceanavenue2311 15-01-2008 05:02 PM

mine are the exact same way.

thats why im so fucked up inside

amethyst 27-08-2008 01:00 PM

I dont really tell my parents much, so yea they dont know I SH, but my mum found a SH bookelt that my school health nurse gave me and a bandage near each other (I know i was an idiot to have them near) she was like why do you have them. I just avoided her for ages and its never been bought up again.
My family may kind of know about whats going on with me, but I think they would probably choose not to talk about it unless it gets really really serious because they know I dont like opening up to them.

Oz. 27-08-2008 01:36 PM

I havn't seen my dad for years.
My mum..... anyone else get parents that know of all the things uve done to cope? For example, she's seen my arms but simply ignores them like nothing's wrong, even if most of my family is used to this crap...

snowflake 27-08-2008 04:18 PM

My parents don't know and I fully intend to keep it like that. Its partly because of them that i'm like this. If I did tell them I don't think they'd be able to handle it so i just think it's better if I keep it too myself.

justanothergirl07 27-08-2008 07:31 PM

my parents know nothing... not that im on meds, not that i si, not that i've attempeted suicide, not even that i'm depressed. they think im all happy happy and thats the way i plan on keeping it.
