I own 430 DVDs at the moment and I'm forbidden to buy any new films until after Christmas which is fair enough but its incredibly hard!!

I spend a lot of time researching and reading up on films etc
But I have no one to talk to or obsess over films with.
So!

Welcome to the room of films!
Where any movie no matter how good or bad it is can be discussed.

At the moment I'm really interested in American History X, it really intrigues me and the reviews are incredible, the plot sounds incredible, Edward Norton's in it who obviously is amazing and he was nominated for an Oscar, apparently his performance is near on perfect. I'm desperate to see it, however its meant to be one of the most violent films (excluding all the so called 'snuff moves' and the rubbish B movies) and so im wondering how violent 'violent' is. Anyone seen it and able to compare it to any films for me?

My to 'To Buy' list is a couple of hundred films long, its going to take me years to get them all, I just adore researching.

I dont know because I haven't seen it :P

Ok, so I'm 19, but because I have problems (blahblahblah) my mum doesn't like me to watch- anything about the devil or torture.
I've gotten around everything so far but not those two so far which kinda means no Audition, one day though. How bad actually is it? Im not into violence for the sake of violence, films like Saw or Hostel are of no interest to me, Battle Royale- now that is beauty, not pointless. Love that film. I really enjoyed House of Flying Daggers and Hero but not enough to buy them, I don't know why though, I can't put my finger on it.

I love Alien, haven't seen Aliens actually, can't think why, its on the list but that doesn't mean much, I mean what isn't *sigh* :P

Im so annoyed at the moment that they are remaking EVERYTHING its like they cant come up with anything new, today I found The Incredible Shrinking Man, an awesome looking film from 1957 and they are doing a remake next year! What rubbish.

Oh oh I love The Wickerman, its the best, best BEST. Love it.

AMERICAN HISTORY X, that's one of my favourite films ever.

Yes yes yes. BUY it. All of you. It's so thought-provoking and just wow. And it's actually two-sided, not just like: skinheads are stupid and bad. The people are actually really intelligent.

A few weeks ago I was totally recommend to watch American History X (and especially since Edward Norton's in it) but I'd forgotten until I read your post.
Personally love horror and 'violent' films. Battle Royale, now that is love, when I first bought it I wacthed it eveyr day for a fortnight, my friends thought I was insane.

I own a lot of dvds, not sure how many but it's not as many as yours! But since being at uni I've been limited to watching the same 30 dvds :( well I've watched ones of my boyfriends but it sucks having so few at uni cos I have random urges to watch films but can't cos they're at home.

East Asian horror films I love; Audition I didn't find too bad, Battle Royale I love to death (ha!) but I thought Battle Royale Two was too long, they could've shortened it me thinks.

I also love 80s films: Flashdance, Footloose, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club etc.

Aaaah I love films, my boyfriend thinks I'm mad.

Has anyone seen Pans Labyrinth? That is simply amazing and I adore it.

Ok, so we have established that American X is good (which I already knew!!!) I need to know how violent it is! I need it compared to another movie violence wise pleeeeease.

How 'bad' is Audition compared to say Battle Royale? I still haven't gotten or seen A Tale Of Two Sisters!! I think its on the list though *checks* Yups.

Pans Labrynth I adore, I can (and do) watch it over and over, I want to watch some more of Guillermo del Toros films to see if they are as beautiful, I'd like to see The Devils Backbone.

80's films are the best!!!
Eeee I love them, also musicals. Yes. I also have a lot of Disney films, a lot of James Bond and all the Studio Ghibli films.

A Tale of Two Sisters is immensely good. If you lived near me you could've borrowed mine but alas you don't :(
Audition is more about torture than Battle Royale, it is a bit ew at times but as citizens of today's world I feel it's nothing we've seen before. But I could be wrong as it's been a few months since I've seen it!

I've not seen American History X but after looking on trusty imdb and looked at the plot keywords it looks pretty gross! Plus it's about Nazi's and anything about Nazi's I don't like watching.

The Devils Backbone looks to be along the same lines sort of as Pans Labyrinth... set in Franco's Spain near the end of the Civil War. But I must say some bits of Pans Labyrinth made me go 'ew' at it, I think Devils Backbone is like that too.

Ahh yes musicals, I love a bit of musicals myself.

My boyfriend loves the Studio Ghibli films but I've only seen Spirited Away but he was so excited that I'd not only heard of them but owned one and loved it he talked rather excitedly about them for about half an hour lol.

Ah I could just talk for hours about films :p

Sadako you've really got to watch all of the Studio Ghibli films, they are all great, if not amazing. I love them. I re watched Only Yesterday the other night, it's so simple, yet it really is quite beautiful. WATCH THEM. Espeically, Whisper Of The Heart, My Neighbour Totoro and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds.

I love it so so much, but don't know anyone who has seen or even heard of it.

wow i have around 300 dvds and i thought that was a lot, i'm out of shelf space now so thats ended my dvd purchasing for now. One of my favourite and probably overplayed dvds is Eternal Sunchine of the Spotless mind. Everything about that film is brilliant.

Does anyone listen to the kermode podcasts? they can be well funny aswell as a good guide to the films. I generally agree with him 4 of my fave films are the wicker man, blade runner, pan's labyrinth and the exorcist. Though i really don't agree with him over the pirates films.

Yar, i own all of the Studio Ghibli films =] Howls Moving Castle is great, although, to me it's not one of the best.

I still need to The Prestige, i've had it since like it came out and god knows why but i still haven't watched it. I'd watch it tonight but i can't go back to sleep tomorrow morning when my daughter does so i'll be too tired haha

American History X is a bit on the violent side... it's been a while since I last watched it so I can't remember just how violent, but it always leaves me feeling a bit disturbed (even though it's a brilliant film).

I really liked The Prestige as well, though I also guessed the ending about halfway through.

I dunno how you peopel do it
it just scared me haha

its an annoying habit of my brain to work through all possible solutions to things like that and as the film moved on it became cleare for me what the ending would be

Blade Runner is...love. I cant think of anything better, its amazing, so, so wonderful. I haven't seen Prestige, but I have just added it to my list as it looks awesome :D
Garden State I love, Miss Congeniality is too...sweet and pink.

What have I just to gotten watch. Um. Hairspray, the original Miracle on 34th Street, Death in Venice, Dangerous Liasons and the Goonies :)

Movies based on computer games are REALLY bad, so much so it just ruins the game so you can never play it again. The newest movie is hitman, bases on the hitmans game *sigh*

but in battle royale, a lot of people missed something really funny at the end, when they are on the boat and the guy is lying there dying *gigles* he has an errection.... It was a great movie but how they couldnt have edited that bit i dont know

yeah the hitman game is far better than the movie, and don't get me started on Doom. Has anyone seen the golden compass? all the reviews i've heard don't fill me with confidence.

The golden compass - It really doesn't appeal to me, the fact that the books bored me aswell so meh lol.

OOOOOOOOHH The Beach is good movie, although that may e because leonardo di caprio walks out of the sea topless :wow:

Has anyone seen Zodiac? I know it's been out ages but I am thinking about getting it but I dont like how[for those who don't know it's about a serial killer who was never cought to put it simply] it has no real ending seeing as the killer was never cought.

I like The Beach but seriously read the book by Alex Garland. The book is 100% better than the film and having read the book before watching the film I was tearing my hair out at the bits they edited and left out that was vital to the book's plot.

Hm, the supermarket scene...
Think the six Mr's in Reservoir Dogs, instead of going in a jewelery store, they run into a supermarket who's owned and run by enemies of Joe. Instead of just getting the goods and running, they decide to have some fun, Mr Blonde styley...

Mr Blonde is the closest representation of the main character in AHX.

As for the curb scene, ugh how can I describe this? Mix a bit Mr Blonde's physicality and Mitsuko's sense of evilness, and the evil smile afterwards, and you'll come fairly close. It's been rated as usually one of the top most gruesome deaths in cinema history, and with good reason too. If you don't like squish (as in sound not visual) you should be well prepared for a few dozen sleepness nights...

Those two are probably the worst but I'll have to see the movie to see otherwise...

The curb scene in itself if worth the 18 rating yet alone the rest of the movie...

I LOVE films too, I'm OBSESSED! I don't own 450 because I'm always having to sell them at Blockbuster then rent again etc etc as I'm usually poor.

My favourite film is A Clockwork Orange, it's so original and amazing! Yes, also, disturbing.

LOVE American History X, LOVE Eddie Norton! It's a dark quite depressing film, especially because it has a male rape scene in but it is really well written, well acted and has an important message behind it.

Don't want to sound unwelcoming so, hello and enjoy the forums, but I find that the usual male gang rape in prison device cliche, and annoying. There are other ways of making the viewer feel sympathy or lack of, for a character in prison.

Although one of my favourite films, Shawshank, used the usual rape device, there are at least another three devices used as well and so I forgive.

My rule when buying films is don't spend over £8, someone said about Zodiac? I can't wait to see that but its taking a while to get under £8. I did treat myself to Hairspray and my brother got me Pirates of he Caribbean :)

I think I'll maybe wait for American History X, it sounds a bit much for me at the moment, another film I can't wait to see is Rosemary's Baby, I'm really looking forward to that, its going to be awesome.

The Beach I enjoyed but not as much as the book, the Golden Compass...I don't think im going to see it. I'm pissed off they called it that in the first place, its bloody stupid, I went to see His Dark Materials on stage, all three of them, it was six hours long and absolutely amazing. It was...wow. The books are incredible, I don't think I need to see a film that thought it would be too daring to use the word Aletheometer.

Films of games don't work in the same way that most remakes don't work I believe. Remakes make Aimee annnnnnngry. I don't think Clockwork Orange is that disturbing really, I don't know why, theres just something about it that makes it...beautiful. I don't know what it is.

I love American History X.

Also I agree about The Golden Compass. His Dark Materials are three of my favourite books and I don't want to see the film as it looks like they've changed it too much.
However I am told I am seeing it next week so I shall let you know!

Clockwork Orange the book is brilliant. Clockwork Orange the film is average really. Same as many adaptions. And remakes annoy me too!

i wouldn't say american history x is that violent. as someone else said, there are two really violent scenes in it.
but they're not really stretched out.
&i don't know. everytime i watch the "curb scene" i still have to look away a bit, &i've seen ahx maybe five or six times.
it's an amazing film though.

Gilbert I totally agree the book of Clockwork Orange is better, I do love the film as well though. Im watching Seven at the moment, I love this as well, it made me read Dantes Inferno. I love it.

Noticed it first time I saw it, does make one wonder why they didn't edit it. Or even why they left it in the Special Version as well.

A Clockwork Orange- love the book like anything, the book is genius (imo). Wasn't too impressed with the film, not too keen on adaptation myself and I think mainly cos I'm not entirely familiar with Kubrick's style then I didn't really get what some people really love about the film.

anyone seen the film "a scanner darly"? i think its really good. it was filmed normally then done over on a computer to make it look like its animated. erm not really sure how to explain what its about but its quite funny.

also i bet no ones seen convoy? its a cheesey american road movie about a big long convoy of trucks on the run from the law!! yeah it probs sounds crap but me and my best mate love it! i cant tell you how many times ive seen it. too many cus i know all the lines.

buffalo soldiers is really good as is human traffic.

i have seen scanner darkly (?) and it is a very good film it's shot it real life and then comic book graphics added to it.

i ahve seen convoy and it is very cheesy

nightmare before christmas is a must on christmas eve

I found it to be a bit of a let down. A good film, but overrated. Maybe it just gets too much hype.

Kontroll is a Hungarian film set in Budepest's subway system. really good film check it out.

The book A Clockwork Orange is better but I still love the film so much. I agree about the cliche of male rape scenes in prison films but I do think it worked in American History X.
