Any Eurovision fans ;)

Anyone watch Eurovision?
I've been watching since 2009 or so and started watching all 3 shows a couple of years ago and it is totally hilarious. Apart from there being the occasional really cool act in there it's the best fun sitting there with my partner scoring all the acts on the most ridiculess criterion you could imagine- we score people on their moustaches, their ability to throw in a water feature or randome unicycle; the cool Russian grannies who idolised Beyonce. I love it!!! Anyone else??:-D
I'm really getting quite excited about this year

zombiehunter 15-04-2014 11:36 AM

People always complain about how the voting has become political but it's not like they can vote on musical talent is it?? :-P

cant stand it myself the only year I actually watched was when lordi were on and they won :-D

staceyrawrcakes 15-04-2014 11:40 AM

I love Eurovision, I get so excited when it's on.

Just a girl, Interrupted. 15-04-2014 12:02 PM

I love Eurovision. Hosting a Eurovision party this year! I can't wait :-)

I once saw a chart that documented the major political events in the UK plotted against the score we got in Eurovision, which was quite cool, but I can't for the life of me find it now!

In my opinion, Eurovision is one of the most ridiculous things that have ever graced our television screens, so naturally, we love it :P I don't like how silly it's gotten though; bring back ABBA!

LittleCloud 15-04-2014 12:38 PM

Lol remember WWI and II- lets not cause another war by not voting for ones neighbours and rivals right?? Seems to be the consensus with voting.
I loved 2010 with MaNGA for Turkey and Zdob Zdob. I LOVE how willing they are to make acts awesome- would you like a water feature? Unicycle? Monacle? Can we put a whole army up on stage like they did with TaTu?
I do think that it's soooo wrong that Israel get to go on but there is no Australian act- we're still technically part of the British Empire right?

Lol I text friends as well as watch with more friends. Eurovision party all the way!!!! Actually there have been a couple of acts which have just about been all-out porn. I love that they can get away with anything. I told my partner when we do the metal festival circuit in Europe we have to do Eurovision too!!

These guys are so corny and make me smile every time. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a1Q_hpGLbs"]Hotel FM - Change (Romania) - Live - 2011 Eurovision Song Contest Final - YouTube[/ame]
Anyone else got a favourite?

The One Who 15-04-2014 05:27 PM

I love the Eurovision and will again be having a drinking game/party thing to go along with it.

This entry has yet to be beaten in my eyes, he was robbed, utterly robbed!

LittleCloud 16-04-2014 02:10 PM

Oooooh!!! I love all the crazy costumes. And Greece- will the tight pants come back again? Hahahahaha

random.swirls 16-04-2014 08:32 PM

When's it on? Wondering if I can throw a party???

The One Who 16-04-2014 08:48 PM

Saturday 10th May for the main show, but the BBC normally show the previous two events as well, which decide who makes the finals. But I find they spoil the surprise and crazy factor of the main show.

This thread made me panic and think I'd missed it *grumbles*
I am a huge fan. I love the cheese :P

Yeah, last year we were out at a pub when it was on and she spent the entire time on the phone to her sister, getting a running commentary on what was happening. :plain:

LittleCloud 18-04-2014 08:53 AM

Because it is totally, totally amazing!!! I am so counting down :woot:

frozen_moonlight 20-04-2014 12:49 PM

I'm a huge fan too, sadly Im from spain and our songs... suck haha. Im always with Sweden they are the best in this constest with Azerbaijan...

(Doesn't matter who wins, its all politics, but it's so funny)

LittleCloud 20-04-2014 01:12 PM

Iceland!! They surprise me every year. Although nothing compares with the tiny, tiny pants of the Greeks ;). Yeah, the politics in it are incredible- I totally agree. Sadly I also agree with you about Spain- although I did enjoy the stage invasion (and that actual act in fact) in 2010

Sefka 21-04-2014 12:54 AM

I probably wouldn't watch it, but I love the cheese and I love Eurovision parties.
I also liked how embarrassed all my Ukrainian friends were by Verka Serduchka.
I've just moved to a new place though and don't have many friends yet so not sure I'll be able to have a Eurovision party this year :'(

LittleCloud 22-04-2014 11:46 AM

Ah, that sucks. Can you have a party by proxy?
I ended up working the night of the finals and messaging people over some of the awesomely ridiculess acts

wi-nter 24-04-2014 08:07 PM

I LOOOOOVE EUROVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a party every year and we make bets on who the first three places will be and it's awesome because you always vote for your favorites which is most likely NOT who is going to win. It's so great to just watch with friends and love about all the weird entries. Last year Greece absolutely stole the show for me and they didn't even win I AM SO MAD. 'alcohol is free'. now that's some quality music right there hahahah. C
Can't wait for this year's Eurovision though I do find it annoying that the neighboring countries especially in eastern europe always for for one another.

(My emphasis)

The UK are at that business as well. We are in cahoots with Ireland and Malta to name two that normally give us some points, for no fathomable reason other than tradition (with Malta being quite British) or neighbourly banter. Heck, let's be honest, if the UK (BBC) didn't pay a substantial proportion of the EBC's budget, the UK wouldn't be in the final most years! And what do we get for that money? One Saturday evening of lovable tosh and the January Vienna concerts!

I'm sure if you go through every single country's history there will be evidence of political voting. Perhaps it's more obvious with the eastern ones because they are former Bloc countries and their ties are that bit closer?

nowhereman 25-04-2014 10:01 PM

No, but my friend is dancing with the Irish entry so you all better vote for it!

absolutely!
it's like a popularity contest of some sorts.

how do you guys choose who gets to sing for oyu at eurovision??
in germany we have a pre-eurovision live voting show where all 16 states send artists to the show and then we get to vote. i never watch that show so i usually just find out who sings for us at the night of the eurovision final.

@The One Who: exactly! there are like the big five right? the countries that never have to even go to the pre-elimination rounds because we pay for eurovision? idk about political reasons. sometimes it does seem like it but then like neutral countries win and it's just so random

nowhereman 30-04-2014 09:58 AM

In Ireland we just have a thing called Eurosong where five songs are performed and the public vote. Nt sure how they pick the five songs in the first place. But my friend is on his way over to perform with our song right now (well he could be there by now) I feel kind if bad cos I still haven't heard or seen it..I did wish him luck though as we've been in touch recently.
Ps. He's the blonde dancer, though I used to dance with the other guy too.

The One Who 30-04-2014 05:27 PM

The UK used to do public vote/phone ins similar to the likes of X Factor. But then that gave us Scooch who were the best of a bad bunch, in my opinion!

The past few years they have just been chosen, presumably by the BBC or whoever puts forward the UK entry.

MamaKida 02-05-2014 09:29 AM

Woot, Eurovision! I do love Eurovision. :)

nowhereman 02-05-2014 10:42 AM

My friend is over there, he posted a pic of the stage and I was gonna post it here but he seems to have deleted it now. It looked awesome though! I wonder if he got into trouble or something for posting it.

Edit: it reappeared! He'd probably kill me for this but I really don't think there's much chance of him coming onto Ryl so I'm posting it anyway.

wi-nter 09-05-2014 06:45 PM

IT'S TOMORROW GUYS!
apparently the pre shows were yesterday and the day before but they don't show them on tv here because we qualify automatically. I don't even know who is singing for us but i can't wait it's just so much fun

FabulousMike 09-05-2014 06:46 PM

Apparently i'm going to have to watch this tomorrow...Shoot me? :P

Charmed 10-05-2014 01:17 AM

Can you watch Eurovision online but behind schedule?! This is the first year I'm not at home so don't have a television! I love watching Eurovision :P

nowhereman 10-05-2014 03:09 AM

I missed it but I saw all the photos on friends fbs who are over there supporting the guy I know. They're all gutted Ireland didn't get through. Bummer. Does anyone know if Germany are through? I looked up and liked their song. I voted for them last year too (my favourite band are German and my future husband lol)

^ This.

Not impressed with our act, but then again I never am.

I consider watching it for the fun of it, but not sure I cba as I think it is pretty long.

nowhereman 10-05-2014 03:19 AM

Oh, thanks! I didn't know wi-nter was German, sorry.

Unbreakable. 10-05-2014 03:22 AM

It's all good, I assumed you didn't know.
I just tend to take note of the few fellow Germans around the forums. :P

Yeah, I think there are like six or so countries that auto-qualify. I might make that up though, I never really follow the event!

Also, quite frankly, Ireland's entry was rather dreadful. It's a shame as you have such a good record in the contest overall!

nowhereman 10-05-2014 03:26 AM

Haha! I watched our entry once, and um yeah, it was rather bizarre with the Irish dancing, but then what do I know lol. Honestly I was left thinking wtf! (Don't tell my friend that though)

I love Germans! (I'm sure you can figure out why) I tried to learn German but I didn't get very far. I may give it another try though.

Unbreakable. 10-05-2014 03:31 AM

I just listened to the song on YouTube, so I didn't see the dancing or anything.
But it sounds hilarious, maybe I will go look for footage at some point.
Almost seems Ireland never recovered from Jedward. :P

Haha, yeah, I am well aware of that and your obsession with that awful, awful band. :P
My boyfriend had to learn German within a year and did a very intensive course and stuffz. It is a hard language to learn as a foreign language, German grammar is a lot more complicated than English grammar. In most cases English is a very straightforward language [well, that is if you ignore the discrepancy between spelling and pronunciation], German not so much.

nowhereman 10-05-2014 03:35 AM

Jedward and Dustin the Turkey as well. Seriously, what were the people in charge thinking? The words laughing and stock spring to mind.

I think everyone is aware of my slight obsession! I don't mind that you don't like them, that means there is more of them for me to have haha.

Unbreakable. 10-05-2014 03:46 AM

Well, I brought my Irish guy back to Germany, so feel free to take that German dude and keep him in Ireland forever. :P

To be fair, Germans are hardly in a position to make fun of the Irish in that contest. We've mostly done pretty miserably.
I did like Lena winning in 2010 though, I quite liked her song. Can't believe 'twas that long ago already!

!

I will do, quite happily! :tongue2: I think Irish and Germans make a good match. (Well I would think that lol)

Unbreakable. 10-05-2014 03:57 AM

I can only confirm that, going by personal experience. :P

Any ideas as to who might win this year?
I am not really familiar with the contestants, so I wouldn't know!

Anyone else watching it. I like Ukraine's wheel thing :)

Sefka 10-05-2014 08:28 PM

Iceland my favourite so far.

Sefka 10-05-2014 08:37 PM

Liking Romania too :)

Sefka 10-05-2014 08:48 PM

Oh, Poland...

Pi.R^2 10-05-2014 09:43 PM

We're about to turn it on. I'm only interested in the voting though, because it has numbers. #nerd alert.

Unbreakable. 10-05-2014 09:47 PM

I mostly avoid it, as it is so full of disappointment. :P

chinahorse 10-05-2014 09:50 PM

Ack lana its epic!

LOVE it, graham norton is growing on my but cant replace the wogan.

Bear 10-05-2014 09:52 PM

Iceland were ace! My other half likes Poland so far x

Unbreakable. 10-05-2014 09:53 PM

Disturbing, the word is disturbing. :P

We will go out to see a movie in a little bit, I will check who won when we get back, but that's about as interested as I get. :P

I have no idea who presents the show on German TV, but I am sure they manged to find someone to make a poor job from it. :P
