#cutforbieber trending on Twitter.

So the hashtag 'cut for bieber' is trending on twitter at the moment because he smoked some weed and his fans think that if they cut themselves, he won't smoke weed.
Thought some of you might have some veiws on this.

I personally think that it is horrible and that you have to be many shades of stupid to even contemplate doing something like this. It's basically belittling the very real problem of self harm and is thus obviously not very good as people who self harm for legitimate reasons (ie. not trying to get people to stop smoking weed) will be the ones who get criticised et cetera.

I am terrible at writing what I mean but I hope you get what I am saying.

talaiporia 07-01-2013 10:56 PM

That's appalling.

sajhfuahuefghaeg 07-01-2013 11:05 PM

Well, on the plus side, weed is less cool now.

Bellatrix 07-01-2013 11:06 PM

Wow. Just.... I think celebrity culture has gone too far in terms of it's ability to influence the actions of so many young people.

QuietChaos 07-01-2013 11:07 PM

Some people are saying that it was started as a joke/ spoof.
Either way its completely belittling self harm.
It's a serious thing that people deal with, and it's stuff like this that makes it have the reputation it does.

Epicene 07-01-2013 11:15 PM

I can imagine this started as a spoof. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if his fans were so obsessed that they actually think they're contributing to the greater good of his health...

sajhfuahuefghaeg 07-01-2013 11:17 PM

Apparently it started off on 4chan.

Good old 4chan.

Greyscale 07-01-2013 11:26 PM

Even if it started as a joke, I can also imagine his actual fans doing this. Which is horrible. I agree with your assessment, Flem.

squirrelspit 07-01-2013 11:28 PM

well, they shaved their heads for him, im sure they'll do this too.

I bet it started as some person thinking it would be funny.

There are so many JB fans, maybe if they do actually do it, the schools will have a panic and suddenly start giving self harm talks etc.

Could maybe have a positive consequence.

Koriandr 07-01-2013 11:28 PM

I almost couldn't believe what I was reading when I read that hashtag...
What?! This is possibly one of the (if not the most) stupidest things I've ever heard of.

I'm really disgusted that sick people would actually start that trend... even if it started as a spoof, it is terrible that there are some fans who are so vulnerable that they believe cutting themselves will influence Justin Bieber.

__T 07-01-2013 11:30 PM

People actually did this.

I'm disgusted.

squirrelspit 07-01-2013 11:32 PM

i also have to say, i feel mighty sorry for JB.. it must be so awful to feel like everything you do is going to have such a profound effect on people, i mean, hes still only a young guy himself.

squirrelspit 07-01-2013 11:44 PM

well, they may not have started it, they might genuinely belieb (see what i did there) that them hurting themselves will either a) actually make him not smoke weed or b) prove how much of a fan they are.

fans have been sending death threats to their celebrities partners for years.

squirrelspit 07-01-2013 11:47 PM

well, they believed that he had cancer and so shaved their heads in support.

people do funny things when theyre besotted.

nowhereman 07-01-2013 11:47 PM

It's awful, I saw a pic of someone who had cut Tokio Hotel and Bill, and it disgusted me. They would be so upset if they ever saw that. I mean why cut something good in your life? It's never even once occurred to me to cut a singer or band's name. I wouldn't feel compelled to do it if I found they'd smoked pot either.

little.ophelia 07-01-2013 11:48 PM

Photos of stuff from this keep showing up in my facebook newsfeed. I've never had that much of this sort of stuff. And some from pretty young kids. I wonder if anyone will now be afraid to ask for help because people will laugh and think it's about Justin.

This. I mean if Tokio Hotel or Evanescence or someone I like did something I didn't agree with, it would still never occur to me to cut over it. I mean I don't even know them, why would I cut over them? It's just, bizarre to me.

squirrelspit 07-01-2013 11:52 PM

some people might see it as the same as getting a tattoo of your favourite band.

makedamnsure 07-01-2013 11:56 PM

I think it is a shame that so many people are so easily influenced.
I was always taught to think for myself and question instructions
"Because someone told me to" or "because my friends did it" was never a good enough reason when I was a child - "if someone told you to jump off a bridge would you do it?"

If people will cut themselves because someone on the Internet told them too/they think it will stop bieber smoking weed then they probably need help!

Crazy Cupcakes 08-01-2013 12:02 AM

My dash on Tumblr keeps coming up with screenshots of people's Twitter posts with pictures of it :<

Not cool.

The Stolen One 08-01-2013 12:05 AM

This is so triggering, so many images popping up on facebook, why would you post it even if you're stupid enough to do it for him?!

Oh well I would see self harm as a bad thing so wouldn't want to associate it with my favourite band. But I am in recovery. I guess someone who is still cutting might see it that way. Not me personally though. But thanks for explaining, I hadn't thought of it like that.

RenewedHope 08-01-2013 12:39 AM

I got a tattoo connected to my favourite band as a symbol of moving forward and it helped my recovery as I self Harmed a lot less due to not wanting to cut in that area.
I posted about how upsetting and disturbing I found the cutforbieber thing and have already had one friend take the piss out of, not only these people who are cutting but, self harmers in general and practically saying it's the same thing

Rodolphus 08-01-2013 12:43 AM

I just hate the way that self injury has now been introduced to a **** load of young and obviously very impressionable people as a way to manipulate others. Exactly what those who 'really'* self harm need - more bad press and further additions to the attention-seeker stereotype.

*I couldn't think of a better word. I mean those who harm for their own private reasons, as their coping mechanism, rather than all this crap.

makedamnsure 08-01-2013 12:48 AM

This did make me giggle though

"@TooMessedUp: I tried to be a Justin Bieber fan today...

But I just couldn't cut it!"

Aztec 08-01-2013 12:49 AM

I logged onto facebook after getting out of the cinema, and certain folks from here had 'liked' the self harm pics, which caused me to become immensely triggered and just took my mind back to a place where, for just one night, I was trying to escape from.

People are noobs.

Tig 08-01-2013 12:51 AM

This sounds so scary because people are actually going to do it/have done it. It's a really sad situation.

Rodolphus 08-01-2013 12:56 AM

Also, if you were any kind of fan, why on earth would you want to make someone feel like that? To feel like you are responsible for someone hurting and abusing their body is terrible. If that's what people are after, then they need a serious reality check. I know all this started off as a hoax, but that's not how it's going to end.

Carla_x 08-01-2013 01:16 AM

I really don't think it's real. If it is, then that is very, very sad.

Justin Bieber fans tricked into self harming by internet prank

Quote:

Justin Bieber fans self-harm in 'protest' against his alleged marijuana smoking.

The Twitter hashtag was started as a joke but was apparently taken seriously by young fans

Justin Bieber fans have been posting pictures of themselves self-harming as a way of pleading with the pop star to stop smoking marijuana.

The hashtags #cutforbieber and #cuttingforbieber started trending on Twitter after internet message board community 4Chan started spreading the meme as a joke, writes Complex.

Young fans of the singer however, soon picked up on the hashtag and started posting pictures in which they are thought to be cutting themselves for real, reports Gossip Cop.

"The origins are fake, but the Tweet trending — and the people supporting it — are disturbingly real," writes Complex.

US gossip website TMZ recently posted pictures obtained from an anonymous source which show Bieber "clutching a smouldering blunt" while at a party in a hotel room in Newport Beach.

After the photos were published, Bieber took to Twitter to speak directly to his fans in a series of emotional tweets.

According to TMZ, Lil Twist, a rapper friend of Justin Bieber's, was with the pop star in his hotel room when the pictures were taken. The photos were allegedly taken the day after a photographer was killed trying to take a picture of Bieber's white Ferrari.

Since the accident, Justin Bieber has called for tougher laws involving paparazzi photographers.

:ermm: I dislike Bieber and I think the majority of his fans are freakishly over obsessed but this is pretty low so far as online pranks go. Manipulating young teens into self harming by playing on their obsessions is rather cold especially given that someone could have ended up hospitalised or worse.

Peoples opinions on this?

Freedom Fighter 08-01-2013 01:26 AM

It was a GNAA trolling activity not a 4chan thing

Sammie1495 08-01-2013 01:33 AM

I don't think many people really are serious. But instead of being serious they make fun of it. And it really does add to the thinking that cutting is only to get attention and it's weird or a joke. That is the worst thing I think. Except for the few who will take it seriously. That is just so sad. I can't imagine having a mind twisted enough to start this as a joke or otherwise. I wish people would just stop tweeting about it though. It's starting to get pretty triggering.

Delephynite 08-01-2013 01:35 AM

If that's what they do when he smokes weed wtf are they gonna do when he snorts his first line of coke?

talaiporia 08-01-2013 01:35 AM

Already a thread here

Left Phalange 08-01-2013 01:37 AM

*Sigh*. People can't be 'tricked' into self harming. Self harming has underlying issues and there's clearly something wrong with these kids if they are actually cutting themselves over this. HOWEVER, it has not been proven that any of the Twitter accounts doing this are actually real. Most are fake accounts.

To be fair, they've got to be fuccking insane to like Justin Bieber in the first place, so I wouldn't put it past them. And I'm not surprised the kid wants to smoke weed if he's got millions of fuccking 12 year olds running after him screaming his name. I'd be taking much harder drugs than that. I hate those little Belieber shiits.

Left Phalange 08-01-2013 01:38 AM

There's another thread in News and Debate, but I'll just repost what I posted in there.

i like him.

well.. his music.

i dont know him personally.

SilentBoy 08-01-2013 01:42 AM

Personally i think this is both hilarious and insane.
I shall explain:

Hilarious, because apparently people are stupid enough to believe everything they read on the web, and because they are stupid enough to think that what they do (this by the way is regardless of what it is they are doing) is actually going to change the way a celebrity behaves

Insane, because, and i think we can all agree on this one, it makes mockery of self harm and those that do it for what i guess to summarise you could call "legit" reasons.

People a freaking morons. That is my inflation adjusted 2p's worth

N.b. Side note, personally if JB wants to smoke weed he is perfectly entitled to and i won't judge him. It's only a big deal because he is a celebrity. If this was pre-fame for him, nobody would care.

Palladion 08-01-2013 02:03 AM

This is actually sick, the internet troll has just gone too far this time. Usually I don't really mind trolling, most of the time it's pretty harmless it just gets people a bit annoyed, but when people are actually harming themselves it's just gone way too far. I get that the fans who are doing it are being, for lack of a better word, stupid. But the troll who started this must have known that most JB fans are young girls, who let's face it are practically in love with the guy and are very impressionable, it's disgusting.

I also hate that people are posting pictures of this on facebook, I was just happily scrolling down my news feed then suddenly blood and cuts everywhere. Not cool.

Leo Pard 08-01-2013 02:03 AM

I was going to post this thread in news and debate but felt that it fitted better here so yeah.

I agree with everyone saying that the fans are stupid for doing this.

Also, I was going to say that surely this is going to just make him feel horrible and therefore smoke more weed to get away from it all and then everything will spiral out of control and stupid children will be killing themselves because they idolise somebody a bit too much.
It is over 50 shades of ridiculous.

Exactly Tamz.

SilentBoy 08-01-2013 02:05 AM

The trolling was funny when it got fans to shave their hair.
But yeah, i agree with Palladion, its a step to far.

Flem, i think the weed bit was actually a hoax. Though not sure on that one

Leo Pard 08-01-2013 02:08 AM

No I think the whole #cutforbieber thing was a hoax as in, it was publicised that he had smoked weed and then someone thought 'I know, I shall start cutforbieber and say that if people do that then he will stop smoking weed' but if not fair enough.
I shall go do some reasearch.

SilentBoy 08-01-2013 02:10 AM

Ah maybe so, either way it's stupid.

Also side note, i would seriously advise people not to search the hashtags on twitter.
Some pretty triggering images on there

Here is a link to a news article.

abstract449 08-01-2013 02:13 AM

even though this is absolutely sickening and ridiculous, it makes me sad because I bet that there will be a handful of gullible girls who actually try it and end up doing it more and more. No matter your reason for hurting yourself it still can turn into a physical addiction that can take over your life.

Also I just told my boyfriend about this and his response was, "Well you're anti-Beiber so you should do the opposite." I think I'll do precisely that d:

Crazy Cupcakes 08-01-2013 02:39 AM

Someone on my Failbook just posted that someone died from doing it :<

Exactly what I was thinking. People can be influenced by the media/peers to start something & then 'like' it & continue.

& I like your boyfs thinking!

Its as good a reason for them as any , anyone here, has. I think its funny their all lil cuts more than anything.

Not trying to be a dick but bashing them, just opens up you to get bashed on for your reasons. Karma.

And in 6 months or so, the wave of these cutters will be joining this board. YAY
