Lent 2012
Anyone giving up stuff for lent?
I'm thinking of giving up all drinks except water for lent... done it the last 2 years, and felt really good for it. |
I might give up giving up things for lent.
|
Hell to the no, in fact I may take up some new vices for the occasion.

I'm thinking about giving up adding salt to food.
|
Last year i gave up smoking. This year i may do it again. It was fun, as all my friends made the mistake of giving up things they actually did and hated it and i was skipping around going 'nope, dont miss smoking at all' and they got mad at me. Although i had to be careful who i said it in front of in case someone thought i actually did smoke
|
No, am not religious. Don't drink much, smoke, eat unhealthily etc. otherwise I'd consider having a go anyway :-)
|
Smoking and salt!x
|
I'm really not sure! I'm thinking alcohol as I've quit drinking for a bet for 2 months before now and it went really well and I saved a lot of money.
Either that or I'll think of something. Maybe chocolate. |
I think smoking is a good idea, it saves loads! Haha...
(not that I smoke) Giving up chocolate would save me a lot of money, but I wouldn't be able to cope. |
I gave up chocolate last year. Will have to have a think.
|
Seeing this thread has made me think about giving up something for lent but then again I don't think I actually could last for the whole 40 days or however long it is.
I will get back to you. |

I'm not a Christian but I enjoy doing lent. Last year I tried to give up alcohol, drugs and smoking. Actually succeeded apart from one night where I had a couple of pints as it was a mate's birthday.
This year I'm not sure what to give up as I don't smoke etc. any more. |
I'm giving up the use of the word 'fine' and I'm taking up attending morning prayers every day at my Uni as I fail miserably at this.
|
When is lent?
And I am going to give up chocolate I think! |
Lent is a period of time (this year 46 days) beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter Sunday to remember the 40days Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by the Devil before he started his 3 years of ministry.
The traditional reason behind lent is to be a time where the Christian prepares them self for Easter through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving and self-denial. Christians give up something (form of fasting), and sometimes take up something. |
I think I might *try* and give up berating myself/beating myself up, and try and take on positive affirmations.
|
I want to give something up, but I have no idea what. maybe i'll give up beign mentally ill...
:P |
I'm going to give up chocolate for lent. Hardly original but it's my weakness.
|
Not very original, but a good idea if it's meaningful for you :)
Goooood luck :D |
Was this aimed at me?
If so I asked when as in when does it start not what!!! If not then ignore :p Quote:

Sorry, my bad - I mis-read your post. Feb 22nd - April 7th
|
No worries!
I thought so and phew I thought lent was going to be this Wednesday! |
I think in principle it's a good idea but I can't ally myself with a religion I don't agree with. No offence meant just my opinion.
|
I'm actually considering chocolate and coke
|
Last year I gave up beef and pork.
This year I plan to do the same. And maybe give up on soft drinks. |
I do it just for the challenge, not for the religious aspect.
Thinking this year either animal products, junk food or procrastination. Or all three! :P |
I am planning to give up chocolate. Again. Le woe.
Not sure if I want to become vegan. I have a week to make a formal decision on this! |

I think it might be a bad idea though, so I might leave it a few years. |
Junk food *nods*

Good luck with giving up procrastination! If you can do it you'll be more productive than half the world, lol. |
oooooo I was thinking of going Vegan for lent- which i could I think, But chocolate and dairy food are my main food sorces.
Though this could be a good time to vary my diet... It will be that, or go for a 10min run 5 days a week maybe both |

You could go veggie rather than vegan... vegan is a massive step, even just doing it for lent... it's quite a shock to the body...
My friend went from carnivore, then veggie (overnight), then 2 weeks later, went vegan... she ended up in hospital, malnourished and very ill... I have had to teach her to cook and eat properly as a vegan (I'm not vegan, I'm veggie, but my dad is vegan and has been for longer than I've been alive, and I have been cooking for him for years) I also think that doctors would suggest against doing it... |

& yes, Ami, I am! |
giving up meat on fridays and ash wednesday
|
Planning to give up SH as it's something I usually do. Will give up something else too (to avoid the awkward, "So, what did you give up?" question) :P Still stuck for ideas though.
|
im giving up biting my nails and hand sanitizer which may sound sad but apparently i use to much lol
|
Sounds good...
I have no idea what I'm going to do... But good luck for giving up things everyone :) |
Alcohol for definite now!
|
Haha...
I have decided against giving up all drinks except water... It's going to be too difficult with how I feel this year, I am going to write a letter to one person each day (or at least, attempt to), and try and cut down on the amount of chocolate and coke... but not actually cut them out all together. |
I'm going to try do some spiritual readings too. There are some really great Lenten reflections out there, and maybe do some journaling with that. I'm reading these reflections by a guy named Henri Nouwen, he's pretty amazing if anyone ever gets a chance to check out his stuff.
|
HAPPY LENT! :hop:
My list:
|
Going to lectured is good..
I have already failed everything I was going to attempt for lent... - not to SH (failed that this morning) - write a letter each day to someone (wrote the letter, haven't been bothered to go the letter box to post it) - cut down on caffeine and sugar (just had a glass of coke, and had a cup of tea earlier) Oh well... gonna try and at least attempt these things each day. |
I have just decided... I'm gonna keep trying those things, but I'm also going to try and do (at least) one thing that is positive towards recovery, each day... (either that or helping someone else)... I have succeeded in doing something positive towards recovery today :)
|
I've given up using my credit card.
|
I also want to give up something for Lent just so I can show some self control. But I don't smoke, drink and I would NEVER be able to go 40 days without coke so that wouldn't work.
I could give up being promiscuous, but I've only recently started that, but thats fun and not harming me lol. Has anyone got any suggestions? |
