How much do you live off a week?

This was sparked from the 'do you live on your own or with parents thread'

it's aimed at those who have moved out

How much do you live off a week (not inlcuing heating bills and rent as how much these are are often beyond people's control), including things like food, transport, sports, hobbies etc, and phone bills.

One off trips to a different city etc sshouldnt be included, unless you make that trip regulalry enough for it to affect your weekly budgeting.

complicated enough for you? :P

Voldemort 13-01-2012 05:27 PM

So you mean, taking out rent and bills, how much is left over?

offlineforever 13-01-2012 05:28 PM

I honestly do not spend that much money, which is why i possess a lot of money...

whirlpools 13-01-2012 05:32 PM

I don't spend as much as I have to live off. I actually have quite a lot to live off, which feels quite difficult to adnit to as I'm on benefits. I'll be looking for work once I've finished this therapy programme, and will almost certainly have quite a bit less to survive on than I do on benefits, which is frustrating. Yeah... don't eat me, but I don't struggle financially.

The War Doctor 13-01-2012 05:45 PM

I was only half-paying attention and accidentally voted for the wrong one. Fail.

I live on about 40 euro a week - food, transport to college, etc. I'm not sure about the exchange rates but I think it'd be £21-£30.

shadow-light 13-01-2012 05:52 PM

for exact figures I would have to check my excell sheet on the other laptop, but my partner is using it right now.

On average though food is about £15 a week, and then there is £11.50 a week for my partners bus ticket (to and from uni). I generally don't get buses, I walk most places, but once a week I will get a bus for £3.50 to go shopping. So that's £30 a week

we did live off more than this until a few weeks ago, but then I A) lost my job (in fact both jobs) and B) am saving up for a bike as I'm sick of walking everywhere lol

Steel Maiden 13-01-2012 06:21 PM

I buy too many textbooks and I often buy lunches (ie sandwiches, salads....) on the day. But food costs me £20 a week, approximately. I have a Freedom Pass so travel costs me nothing.

Embles 13-01-2012 06:24 PM

Only including travel, food, activities etc, I spend about £30-40 a week, but some weeks are more expensive/cheaper than others, such as when I get the train to see the fella, I tend to have a more expensive week as with the buses to/from station and the ticket, I spend about £20

[Luna] 13-01-2012 06:50 PM

I voted 91+
That includes: food for us, our little boy, the cat and the rats. £60
My partners petrol £20
My travel costs £20
Counselling £5
Any bits the little one needs for school ??
My art group £3

If you count a week with phone bills then that's just under £100.
God, no wonder we never have any bloody money haha

Bellatrix 13-01-2012 06:58 PM

^to be fair, that's £50 a week each (plus child). That's not so bad.

one_step_closer 13-01-2012 07:52 PM

Round about £31-40 I think.

Bleeding Angel 13-01-2012 07:53 PM

i have no idea, i kind of do mines monthly.

Sefka 13-01-2012 07:54 PM

I get paid in two different currencies and rates change and I'm easily confused so I'm not sure. I'd guess around $80.

DollyPOP 13-01-2012 07:59 PM

£50 a week is nothing. That's JSA rate.

I live on as little as possible. I try to fit it into £20 if I can so that I can have £100 spare in case a month for emergencies and unexpected bills.

If I could just not eat, it would be easier lol, but that won't happen because I might just die.

Freedom Fighter 13-01-2012 08:53 PM

no idea TBH. I pay for my food at Uni in term increments.

Bellatrix 13-01-2012 09:06 PM

I'd say Max:
Food (£20)
Travel (£12-17.something - thought TFL have just upped their prices, so will need to double check bus travel card prices!)
Gym: £4
'Extras/uni stuff' - £5.
=£40-45.

That's absolute max. Often it's £30 or lower.

shadow-light 13-01-2012 09:07 PM

your gym is £4 a week??? wow

whirlpools 13-01-2012 09:16 PM

^ I thought that, that's pretty cool!

Bellatrix 13-01-2012 09:20 PM

^ Well it's £16 a month, no contract, any-time freeze/unfreeze. Which works out at £4 a week, hehe.

shadow-light 13-01-2012 09:57 PM

still wow... the council guym here is £30 a month, the none council ones are like £50ish

Bellatrix 13-01-2012 10:01 PM

It's called The Gym Group. Have a google and check your area, coz they are around the UK.

startingagain 13-01-2012 10:02 PM

If you claim DLA you can get free gym membership where I live.

shadow-light 13-01-2012 10:25 PM

apparently the gym group don't exist in Newcastle :(

Sunshine 13-01-2012 10:39 PM

For me and my boyfriend and baby
£155 rent
£60-80 on food, baby milk nappies and general household stuff
£20 gas and electric
£30 eatting out or takeaways

That's a lot but its due to go up because we are moving to a bigger flat

LemonTangWang 13-01-2012 11:37 PM

I don't budget I just spend, the last couple of weeks of the month are usually very sad.

I do this however being a student my money is meant to last me 4 months. It rarely lasts me one. :( I spend when I am feel rubbish!
*consults inaccurate budget sheet* I have written down around £40-50 per week but this includes clothes, uni books etc but normally just gets spent on junk food :/

Same here. The only think I do do is save by direct debit (for a rainy day) otherwise it would never happen and I worry about life's emergencies and like to have a bit of a safety net.

Feel_Good_inc. 14-01-2012 02:00 AM

I live at home so I live on only £20 a week. my dad calls it rent.
I just can't afford to move out. But I hate living at home. It feels embarrassing at my age. Even though I know more people are living at home into their 30's (thank you recession) I still sometimes feel I should have moved out by now. At least into a flat share.
The two important things my money goes to each month are my subscription to bizarre magazine and my mobile phone bill. Other than that i just waste it on sweets, dvd's, books etc.

I try and budget myself. But I only manage it for a few weeks.
I think, because i had such little money while growing up, i just feel I want to enjoy it while I have it. Because otherwise it would vanish on dull stuff like bills and the like.

offlineforever 14-01-2012 02:10 AM

I forgot to say, I spen in all honesty about £15 a week atm.

About £7 is on food and the rest is my mobile bill. Being home is awesome!

JDenning 14-01-2012 02:18 AM

I cant take place in this cause I dont know the conversion to dollars. but I figure about 10-15 a week for food, about 80 for gas, and then that about it.

Palladion 14-01-2012 02:21 AM

Thanks to Student Finance massively screwing up my application, I have about £13-14 a week to live on at the moment. Thankfully I live on campus so I don't have to spend much on travelling and the supermarket is in walking distance, so I just about cope.

Voldemort 14-01-2012 09:38 AM

I'm confused. Is this how much we spend a week, or how much we have to spend in a week?

Either way, my gf and I live off her disability income, so sometimes our outgoings try to be more than our means - but here's to paying off bills in two/three goes!

This stood out it pretty much describes how I feel.

We pay uhm €36 rent.
€30 towards the overdraft.
€30-40 food including the four cats and the dog.
€25 petrol.
And nesrly every week there is a minimum of €17-50 on bills (electricity, fuel, phones, net, tv, etc etc).
Some weeks it varies a little. I'd say we spend more amonth on the animals and bills then anything. Hmm.

I'm basically the opposite... as I have had nothing I am terrified of having nothing again so I find it hard to spend money

CaiteeBug 14-01-2012 08:02 PM

Once my rent, bills and groceries are all paid for, I have about $270 left for the month.

Fry 14-01-2012 08:11 PM

I voted for £71-80 but dividing the mobile phone bill into 4 for weekly would make it £85. It's how much I budget per week - not necessarily all of that gets spent, but how much I could get by on to live is easily quite a bit less than that.
Though it's £50 pw this month as I had to pay for exams I'm taking in the summer. And I've been spending too much on gym visits as I don't want to commit to a membership so pay each time instead. Was really pleased to see that one of those £16 pcm no contract etc. etc. gyms is opening near me soon :)

Jelly Fairy 14-01-2012 08:15 PM

I'm living off JSA atm which is about £50 a week. I still live with mum but used to pay £250 a month rent before I became unemployed, so give her as much of my JSA as I can. It's about 1/5 of what I used to earn so I've had to become VERY careful about my spending!

Awesome.

Forgot to add: they're 24hour. And if you're someone who travels the country for work, for an extra £1 a month you can be a member at every single one.

Bellatrix 14-01-2012 11:52 PM

xXMessedUpXx 15-01-2012 12:25 AM

I'm not sure, however much my esa is

Can't wait to be well enough to work again and actually have money i've earnt, i hate being on benefits :(

sherlock holmes 15-01-2012 03:16 PM

When I was living in my flat in London, after paying my rent and bills, I had about £60 a week left. £20 of that went on food and about £15 went on travel to uni.

Well played there, too heh.
Once the price starts creeping anywhere over £20 the whole budget idea of it is lost I reckon. Does your one play music? Don't think it's mentioned in the FAQ.

Apparently there's no staff 8 PM - 8 AM at my one. I was probably the only person that read that and thought 'oh yay no staff. Run riot' :/
Such an anarchist at heart.

Crumple... 15-01-2012 03:34 PM

I spend about £10 on food, my phone bill is £30 a month so £7.50 a week, transport is £2 a day so £14 a week so about £31.50 a week if I don't go out. But usually I go out so about £60/70 a week.

****, that's a lot of money O_O

shadow-light 15-01-2012 03:57 PM

when people are trying to convert a monthly bill/budget to a weekly one you can't just divide it by 4 as that gives you an incorrect value, you need to multiply it by 12 and then divide it by 52

this probably doesn't matter but it's irritating me lol

Id does, yes, but it's not very loud. I tend to take my own music. They also have these bikes that are like 'experience' bikes with a monitor so it seems like you're riding on the road/countryside/with an assistant. I can't actually do the bikes coz of my knees, but I tried it out and it was kinda fun.

Haha, yes, I thought that too! They have CCTV and emergency assistance though :P

Och it's just a rough estimate though Captain Pedantic :P

as i said it probably doesn't matter really, just one of those silly things that irritates you that you know isn't important but can't ignore :P

Sounds cool, I'll check them out. Will take music too.
& thanks for mentioning the company in the first place, I'd never have known and it's gonna make quite a bit of difference. Especially as the other one I was going to is in the next town so incurred travel costs too, but this'll be like 15 mins walk.

How do you all manage to eat for so little? I wish I knew. My food bill this week was £64.00 just for me and I don't think I was extravagant but I do buy a lot of ready meals. Maybe that's why? I would love to get it down. I aim to stick to £50.00 for food. £16 for dog food. £20 for petrol. £6 for art group. £6 for coffee and bun with support worker and £20 for bits and pieces so £130 in all (mortgage, bills etc. on top of that) but it's soooooooo much less than if I was still teaching.
