Couch to 5k - anyone want to join me?

Ok, so after a term of being stuck at my desk, I've decided I really need to get back into exercising regularly and running. I'm going to do the couch to 5k (see nhs website if you're unsure), and just wondered if anyone wanted to join me in the process? You don't need to be fit to do it, the whole reason behind it is to encourage people back into running and exercise in general.

Bellatrix 06-07-2011 09:14 PM

I may try couch to the door....

beautifulfreak 06-07-2011 10:00 PM

Oohh I'd be interested, definitely! I used to run for stress relief, before I had children. My girls are just old enough to leave with hubby now so I may consider taking to the streets of an evening to get back into it :-)

morningside stranger 06-07-2011 10:45 PM

YES YES YES!!! I haven't had the energy to run for nearly a year now and I'm really missing it. Just checked out the website and the plan looks great! Should we all start together at the same time? Thanks, Lizzie! You've massively cheered me up :)

Whispered Secret 06-07-2011 10:48 PM

Yeah, I think if we all start together then we'll all be on the same week together and can support each other through. I have to admit I went out on a week one earlier, but I have no problems with staying on week one until others are able to get in and join.

When is best for us to start? I'm excited to have running buddies now :)

frenchhorn 06-07-2011 10:51 PM

ooo yes I'll join in, I go to the gym already, but the running side of things is where I need motivation so will be good to have some from here.

morningside stranger 06-07-2011 10:52 PM

ooooh, loving the idea of having running buddies!

I'm actually downloading the podcasts right now. Can't wait to get started!

Lizzie - are you running outside or at the gym? Doesn't really matter, I guess. Just interested :)

Whispered Secret 06-07-2011 10:54 PM

I'm running outside. I live int he middle of nowhere in terms of gyms. And I have a woods nearby that I love exploring.

morningside stranger 06-07-2011 10:57 PM

Woods!! That sounds like quite exciting in terms of running! I'm in a city and so I think I'll avoid the tourists on the pavement and stick to the uni gym. I applaud your sense of adventure though! Right right right, when are we starting?

Whispered Secret 06-07-2011 11:03 PM

Next run I can really do is Fri since I did one today. So Friday?! hehe

Whispered Secret 06-07-2011 11:03 PM

Or should we be sensible and start on a monday?

frenchhorn 06-07-2011 11:05 PM

I wish I could run in the woods, unfortunatly I live in the middle of a city, oh well roads and the gym will have to do for me. monday might be easier to start off.

morningside stranger 06-07-2011 11:06 PM

Monday maybe. It's a bit of a cliche to start something new on Monday. I'm up for Friday if you are! Then that gives people the whole of tomorrow to jump on board! :)

Whispered Secret 06-07-2011 11:09 PM

Ok, let's buck the trend and start on a fri. I've just realised I put this in support, not general, so I'll ask to get this one closed and start a new one in vets general.

Edit - have asked this to get moved to vets general, so keep an eye out :)

morningside stranger 06-07-2011 11:09 PM

okey doke. Good idea. xx

frenchhorn 06-07-2011 11:12 PM

cool, friday it is then :)

random.swirls 06-07-2011 11:55 PM

Moved!

Im also up for this!

Whispered Secret 07-07-2011 12:03 AM

Wooh for couch to 5k!!

I'll send out a reminder tomorrow to get everyone to download the podcast.

PoisonedApple 07-07-2011 12:44 AM

I'm game. Got the phone app so it bleeps when it's time to switch up. :D
Since we're starting on a Friday... Are we doing Fri, Mon, Wed or Fri, Sun, Tues or another plan?

Whispered Secret 07-07-2011 02:25 AM

I reckon so that we can have a run at the weekend, let's do Fri/sun/tues

akita 07-07-2011 09:09 AM

Linkies for anyone who can't find it.

makedamnsure 07-07-2011 09:22 AM

I want to do this, but probably won't run at the weekend.
So I'll start week one on Monday!

It sounds good though. I hate running but am hoping to get good at it!

hope everyone is MEGA KEEN for tomorrow! We're all going to be amaaaazing! Goodbye couch!

sazybel 07-07-2011 09:14 PM

hmm i may have to jump on your band waggon. i tried something similar a couple of years ago and gave up. maybe its time to try again

PoisonedApple 07-07-2011 09:19 PM

I am looking forward to it (though I may not be up for the whole time, depends on how my joints are doing) but have yet to decide where I should start/go.
The following content has been hidden - Reason : thoughts on where to run
I don't know the local trails so probably not a grand idea... Local school track? Boring to only see track, grass and concrete... Maybe just on the sidewalks near my house? Back and forth the length of the grass area by the community garden?
I'll have it figured out by tomorrow after work though I'm sure.

Gone. 07-07-2011 09:22 PM

I'd definitely be up for doing this... I'm just the worst person in the world for motivation in this sort of thing!
I can't make tomorrow but possibly Monday?
I shall join you then :)
Don't leave me behind!

Me too! This way I figure I have accountability lol

morningside stranger 07-07-2011 09:46 PM

Haha! Yep, I'm counting on you guys to yell at me if I whimp out of doing a run!!

No worries, Belle - I seriously doubt we'll have left you behind after only two runs!

yay! So glad that there's going to be a big team of us! :)

Gone. 07-07-2011 09:49 PM

I'm so glad that others are in the same boat as me :)

I'm downloading it now... though there are lots of errors which is frustrating.

Gone. 07-07-2011 09:52 PM

Blahh, it hasn't let me download it!

random.swirls 07-07-2011 10:16 PM

Okay can i download the podcasts to my iphone!

or How do i do it!

PoisonedApple 07-07-2011 10:39 PM

With mine I hook the phone up to the computer with a USB cord, open the phone's drive in your 'my computer' then drag the file to the music folder...
:) I had to create the folder but I have 2 different 'week one' podcasts on it now. Variety may make me keep with it too. lol
Hope that helps random.swirls :)

frenchhorn 07-07-2011 10:40 PM

I may have to start on Monday as well as I'm off to my parents from tomorrow and don't have much time, but I might try to do it saturday.

Whispered Secret 07-07-2011 11:11 PM

If people can't do tomorrow then that's fine. The main thing is to make sure that you do three runs each week, and that we do them approximately at the same time in terms of weeks so we can all moan at each other when we're tired/stressed/worried about the next step up.

I have a job interview tomorrow and I think my uni exam results will also be coming out, so I'm going to be saving up my run for the evening as my final de stress of the day. I love going out at sunset ish time.

Droplet 08-07-2011 12:14 AM

It is beautiful here at the top of the woods at sunset. :)

I'd like to join too if that's ok - it's a great idea for a thread.

Whispered Secret 08-07-2011 09:58 PM

How did everyone's first runs go?

Seemed to take me ages to get into it, but then by 6th run I was going well and then it was like "you have just completed your last run", and I was left thinking "can I just add some more on the end now I'm in the swing of it?! But I was sensible and stuck to it properly. Weather was good for it, if a bit hot, but lovely in the wind. And I got to explore the woods. :)

PoisonedApple 08-07-2011 10:29 PM

I'll update on mine later (still early here - 130 - and I'm at work still)
Might need to start Monday if my SIL keeps me out running errand though :/ we were supposed to go yesterday but she blew me off.

random.swirls 09-07-2011 04:02 PM

I went to the gym yesterday and had a programme update which left me feeling ILL so I will go for my first run tomorrow!

However the lady did my fitness age and it was gross apparently im like an 80 year old!!!!!!

Haha

Whispered Secret 09-07-2011 05:09 PM

I hate gym programme updates, they always leave me so so so tired!

Ignore the fitness age things though, they're not really very scientific. They are only useful as comparative things with yourself to see progress, but a number alone doesn't mean very much.

random.swirls 09-07-2011 05:12 PM

This one was evil and totally ridiculous so I am merrily going to ignore it!!

That's the spirit! ;)

And I might have to start Tuesday as I have realised that I am going to be so exhausted on Monday that I'll likely be quite ill and I have work and the youth group, so fitting a run in will be interesting. Tuesday, okay?

ferretmonster 09-07-2011 10:25 PM

hmmm im so tempted but i just can't run, but this seems like a good place to start but then hmmmmm

my usual attitude to running is only if a man with a knife is chasing me but the podcasts sound good

random.swirls 09-07-2011 11:48 PM

You could give it a go and if it isn't for you then at least you tried!

However, if it isn't for you then enjoy your couch like im enjoying mine at the moment!

ferretmonster 10-07-2011 10:20 AM

lol i dont think i can be doing with 3 runs, but i might give it a go, i down loaded the podcast, only problem is my lungs are feeling a bit icky atm and although ive managed some other exercise i think running atm might make the blow up

Emo 10-07-2011 10:55 PM

I would love to join but i cant run to save my life ( i have asthma and my big boobs get in the way ( . ) ( . ) )

I find wearing a sports bra a size smaller than usual helps with the second issue :) And a very light jog instead of a run may help too...

I didn;t even get home on Friday till 9 pm so I did my run Saturday. I had one of my SILs go with. Did fairly well. I did 3 sets in place because she thought she was going to throw up and needed to stop but rather than stop I just walked and jogged in place. Today's I may not do. I have a migraine and am at work... :( I'll go later if I feel better but I think Mon, Wed, Fri works best for me usually and don't wanna mess up the schedule so if I don't go today I'll skip it till Wed.

Whispered Secret 11-07-2011 09:34 PM

Have just got back from my second run. Was getting a stitch while I was walking but was fine while I was running, how does that work?! Made the mistake of going out in my uni waterproof though, not only because it didn't rain, but also cos I felt embarassed going round in uni stash back here, and cos it was really hot!! But I'm really glad I got out and about and out of the house. Has given my day a purpose.

Gone. 11-07-2011 10:48 PM

I'm going to do this tomorrow. I've not listened to the first podcast or anything but should it take around 20 minutes, do you think? I'm not sure whether to devise a specific route or see where the podcast takes me? Because otherwise I'll end up somewhere randomly, far from home, and have finished and be dead and everything... no, I'm not dramatic at all. I appear to be incoherent this evening - am I making sense?

frenchhorn 11-07-2011 10:52 PM

I didn't get a chance to do my run today, however I did cycle for an hour and swim for an hour and a half, so I dont feel too guilty about not doing it.
