Hi everyone. my class is required to write a feature article for English on a topic of our choice and I have chosen self harm. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to fill out a survey for my research. I'm basically trying to get some somewhat accurate statistics as most official statistics are taken from hospital documents and I know there are many self harmers like myself who have not told any authority figure of their situation. Sorry if this is hard for you. If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? A bit of both she knew i was doing it before i told her but didn't want to say something and upset me I went to far and needed someones help i told her and she said she had thought that I did it anyway
What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? I couldn't cope and I needed help I didn't want to tell anybody but she had helped me out with a lot of stuff and I knew I could trust her

[In my late 20s] I hated myself and wanted to punish myself for 'being bad' - how my father and the bullies had made me feel, because I struggled with my emotions and low self esteem, and believed I was a failure. [NB Hitting and scratching, never cutting, and mainly hitting/bruising.] I'd never heard of self harming before I started. It was kind of 'natural'.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life?It has at times helped me feel in control of the pain, where it stops and starts. Unlike in my past, when there was no escape from abuse.

What is the reason you started self harming? It helped me to cope with everything that was going on in my life at the time.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life? It did. Not anymore. Now it's an addiction. It's controlling me, as opposed to the other way around.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? Some and some... I told my best friend as I knew I needed help, but my parents found out because I didn't hide it well enough (I'm a rubbish liar lol)
What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? I didn't want to tell my parents because I knew they wouldn't understand. I chose to tell my best friend because I thought she would be able to help me, seeing though she's been through similar things.

What is the reason you started self harming?i started self harm for a few reasons the reasons i started self harm was because i was been bullied very badly at school and at home i was been hit around by my parents and was the one who was looking after my siblings i guess i was so alone and withdrawn and frightened i couldnt let myself cry and i had no one to talk to i needed a way to deal with all my pain and that is why i began self harming.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life?yes and no beacause in one way it does but in another way it does not it does because it helps me to deal with the pain and at first when you start self harming you are the one in control of it and your the one who can make yourself feel better but after a while it makes you in less control of your life because it begins to control you and therefore no longer really begins to work anymore as the self harm is controling you and you start doing it for no reasons as such just because you need to.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone?the reason i dont and didnt tell anyone is because people have this perception that if you self harm that your emo and thats not true and also from expierence of telling people i have found out alot of people dont necessarly understand and that makes you feel worser to tell so for me i come to the conclusion its better to keep it to yourself so that then you dont get hurt by peoples reactions and also its kinda a private thing.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? I told people because I need to talk about what's on my mind, and I can't keep my own secrets. Ever.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? I wanted to deal with on my own, and for ages I refused to let myself tell anybody, but in the end it just got too much and I had to tell somebody. I'm glad I did now.

What is the reason you started self harming? [around 11 years old] Still somewhat unknown, I suppose I wanted to feel like I was alive, living, real; and to illustrate and give face to my emotions.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? Not willingly. a friend saw cuts on my body when clothing slipped up and the word spread through friends and finally to my family.
What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? Firstly, it's a very private issue, and I'm a very private person. Secondly it has a dreadful stigma attached and when word surfaces that you're a self-harmer, labels get thrown. I didn't want that. Finally sheer embarrassment for my parents.

Ultimately because my father had an affair. But it was a build up of being insulted by parents, a medical condition, bullying and just generally hating myself immensely.

Yes, unfortunately. Though I know that it is out of control now and it isn't something I can stop it makes me 'feel' in control, even if I am not.

They did, I am not so sure that they do now. Some people do.

Because I was scared they would use it against me and manipulate/laugh at me. I didn't trust anybody enough to open up and didn't want them thinking badly of me thus, ruining the relationship that was already there.

I'm too scared about how they are going to react. I don;t want anyone to judge me and I don't want other people to be upset by it. I don't mind hurting myself, it's other people that I mind hurting. I don't want to do it.

What is the reason you started? The first time I SI'd was after a fight with my mom. I'd already been feeling depressed for a year and everything was just spiraling downwards, I don't know. I just hated myself so much at the moment, I wanted to hurt myself and cause pain.

Does it help you feel in control? Not really, a lot of the time it makes me feel like everything is getting more out of hand. Sometimes I feel like I deserve pain, sometimes it just helps me calm myself down- I can never stay angry at anyone and I could never hurt anyone else so I take my anger out on myself. Other times I just need to feel.

Why don't I tell anyone? I'm afraid of how they'll react. I don't really have friends but if I told my family or the handful of people I talk to, I'd lose them too and I can't handle that. And, I feel guilty about it, I don't want to hurt anyone...its sort of like my demons are my own to deal with and it just wouldn't be fair to put it on someone else. That, and I don't know anyone who would understand.

I only told my friend a couple of years ago, before that I was worried no one would understand and would think I was a freak, they would also try and get me to stop when I wasn't ready to. I only told my friend because I knew he would understand. I won't tell anyone else because it's harder to know how they'll react, and I think some people would actually make it harder for me to recover by not understanding how I feel and putting too much pressure on me to stop (eg parents)

What is the reason you started self harming? I had obsessive thoughts (not sure if they were voices or thoughts) to self harm, telling me to do it over and over so eventually I just gave in cause I was so sick of resisting.
I also recall minorly self harming at a very early age but I honestly have no understanding why I did it. I think it was cause I was distressed but I honestly don't know why a 3 year old would be so distressed. It wasn't for attention as I freaked when someone saw me do it and made an excuse. I don't know if the early SI and the teenage SI are linked at all.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life?It sometimes was for control. I liked it the second I tried it (I didn't even know you would like it until I finally gave in). I liked hiding it and having it be my secret, so I suppose it was a form of control. Now I do it for similar reasons and also cause it makes my head stop going crazy, so again I guess that is control.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? i willingly told 1 friend back when i started as they did it too and then they told someone so my parents found out. i then said i stopped, which i did, but started up again and then refused to tell anyone for a while. then someone i didn't know well asked me if i was a cutter so i said yes. they then pressured me into telling my parents as i was barely too young to receive counseling without their permission. so i willingly i suppose told my parents but i only did it cause i wanted access to counseling. since then i have told some people, but i tend to hide it. My bf is the only one who knows I have done it recently and that's only cause he can see the cuts.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? I didn't know that it was a big deal..I just had always been that way. Even after being put in the hospital I managed to not tell my family until a year ago. I'm ashamed of it and I know it is not understood or accepted. The scars alone have ruined how my partner of 6yrs views me as no longer attractive. Many people have acted like I am some kind of psycho path, so I am not in a big hurry to keep letting people know. Hell-even the pros don't know what to do with me anymore-I just keep getting sent from one form of therapy to another.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? my parents found out from the school counselor,my sisters found out through my mother and I told my close friend at three in the morning when I went to far and he helped me with how to treat my wounds.

I was afraid they would see me differently, I didn't want to have to try to explain WHY, I knew telling someone would make me have to work on it and I wasn't sure I was ready. I didn't want to make MY problems anyone elses problems.

What is the reason you started self harming? no particular reason as such just a number of things like having to sit by and watch my best friend, the most important person in my life starve herself nearly to death, anger at myself, not knowing how to get rid of emotions, hating myself, thinking that whining about my insignificant problems to others wasnt fair so i never told anyone i was feeling rubish so things just built up, i dont come from a family where we talki about our "feelings" we ignore any problems and wait for them to go away.

A number of people know, my parents, my gp , some of my mate found out at college, camhs, some other teams like the crisis team etc as its on the computer since i have had to go to A&E sometimes.

Some i told willingly others they found out from other people. Like i told college at 16 about it and college ended up telling my parents who took me to my gp I confined in my mates from my gp i started seeing a counsellor then when i had 'stopped' .. well my parents found out again later which is when camhs found out etc.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone?
Even now the people who dont no i like to keep it that way, that they dont do , to ashamed mainly and also i dont like the 'type' i am also fed up of been called an attention seeker or emo when those or simple not true. Also people dont u nderstand it and i feel so people am talking more about mates see me differently now also i dont like to make people worry about me.

What is the reason you started self harming? Dealing with difficult situations in life, I didn't know how else to stop the pain. It didnt start of consciously, but escalated from there.

First person founf out after 4 years, I was at a low point and couldnt deal with anything anymore and he happened to be there at the time when I needed to talk, so he was willingly, but most people after that were either told by others against my will or found out some other way.
What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? Combination of shame, fear of the reaction and the fact that it was such a personal reaction to things I had never told anyone about.

What is the reason you started self harming? To be incontrol of feelings and cope with life. I started when i was 7 but back then i never knew it was self harm. I also started to deal with the feeling from physical and emotional abuse from my parents and grandparents and used it to cope with being bullied because i grew up in the army.

Does self harm help you feel in control of your life? Sometimes but my main reason for self harm is that if i hurt myself the worst no one can hurt me more than i already have.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? I told them but not willing.. they knew something was happening so had no choice to.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? Im afraid to because of others reactions and the fear of my parents finding out. i dont want to be called names or thought of a freak even more than i am.. better this way of people dont know.

Some found out by seeing the cuts and some I told willingly when I'd come more to terms with it myself

Fear of a negative reaction (which I got anyway) and fear of emotional conversations with people I didn't want to have them with!

What is the reason you started self harming? It started because of anger. Just didn't know how to deal with it as I was like 7/8 so I hit myself and other things untill I found cutting at 14.

What is the reason you started self harming? All I knew when I started self-harming was that it took the pain away. When I cut, the bad feelings went away.

Does self harm help you feel in control of your life? No. The more years that pass since I started self-harming, the more out of control I feel.

Does anyone know that you self harm? Yes. My mother, my sister, and a couple of friends know.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? I told my friends willingly. But mom and my sister just found out. They saw marks on me. I tried to lie about what happened but they weren't convinced. So I confessed.

What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? I was ashamed. I felt abnormal and I didn't think anyone would understand.
